Through the Dark

“Hi Sara.” he said stepping into the apartment “Remember me?”

“Uh sure come in.” getting annoyed at him, my heart starts pounding “William, right?”

“Yeah that’s me. So I was at Starbucks the other day and I happen to see you on a Yahoo! news feed.” he says putting the flowers and chocolate down on the table.

“Okay.” sitting down at the table I feel my nerves starting up.

“And I thought, hey that’s the girl that I worked with last summer. And I just thought I’d stop by and say. Hi.” he says giving me that sweet smile I fell in love with.

“And how do you know where I live?” trying to be cool and confident.

“I asked our H.R. lady and she gave me your address. Is that weird?” he says sitting down on the opposite side of me “I just wanted to see how you’re doing. I haven’t seen you around lately.”

“Oh yeah I took the week off and visited my brother. But I’ll be back on Monday.”

“Oh cool. How was it?”

“Good.” getting confused I get straight to the point “So why are you talking to me now? I thought you hated me or something.”

“Hate? No I would never hate you.” looking away he sees a picture of Debbie and I “Who’s that?” pointing to the wall.

Looking to the left “Oh that’s my roommate Debbie. She just went out for pizza.”He’s changing the subject.

“Oh.”

“So back to why?”

“Oh yeah sorry. Well I just needed to see you.”

“Why?” I say a little louder than usual. He’s getting me mad and I don’t have time for this.

“Well, honestly.” he looks down and starts to fidget around “I really like you, Sara. I just didn’t show it before, because I was scared. Nervous.”

“What? By me?”

“Yeah. You’re just so beautiful and you took my breath away. Literally. I had to go outside to get some fresh air.” now looking at me.

“Oh.” my chest is pounding and I get nauseated. Breath.

“And I just thought if I forget about it, then the feelings will go away. It did, for a while until I saw you on the internet. And I took that as a sign and went for it.” reaching over the table he brushes my chin up “Look at me. I wanna see that wonderful smile.”

I lose all nerves and give him the weirdest cheesiest smile. I start to laugh nervously and look all over the room, except at him.

“Was that strange to hear?”

“Y-yeah I mean wow.”I seem to be in a daze just by looking at him.

“Well I also came here to see if you want to go out sometime? Tomorrow?”

“Uh,” looking at myself “Yeah tomorrows fine.”

“Okay. Uh let’s see,” looking at his phone “I’ll be back around noon and we can go from there.”

“Sounds good.” getting up from the table I walk him out.

Once he’s gone I close the door and slide to the floor. William just asked me out. And I said yes. Wow how is this all happening? Before L.A. all my life I never went on a date. Or even had a boyfriend. Or never been kissed. What has L.A. done to me? This is crazy. Saving my clothes for tomorrow I grab my pj’s and jump in the shower. Finally all clean and smelling good I hear the door open again.

“I got pizza!” Debbie yells from the living room “Come and get it!”

Putting on my slippers and tying my hair up in small sectioned buns I run to Debbie. Stuffing out faces we start to talk and laugh about the good old days.

“Remember the time when we went to the park that one Saturday night?”

“Yes! And we got chased away by the dog catchers! That was fun.”

“I know and you like totally fell off the ladder and landed on your bum!”

“Ow that hurt like a mother! I can still feel the bruise.” laughing I figure I should tell her now. “Hey you’ll never guess who came over after you left.”

“William.” she says biting her pizza and looking at me “Right?”

“How did you..”

“I passed him on the street. And boy did my fist get twitchy. I was this close,” putting her finger up “to kicking his ass and chasing him away.”

“Girl you need to chill. Is it Ryan you’re really mad about?”

“Ugh don’t get me started on him. He was suppose to take the weekend off so we can go down to Pagosa Springs but you know what he said? He said he forgot to put in the request! How can you forget something that relaxing? Ugh! Anyway, I guess I’m just pissed at the whole male population.”

“Ha yeah he asked me out. So I won’t be home tomorrow.” taking my napkins and throwing it in trash.

“Really? And what about. Never mind. Damn you Ryan!”

“Okay Deb I’m sleepy. Goodnight!”

“Yeah yeah night!”
