My Favorite Date

Chapter Two

Today was my first official date with Liam. After our dinner and the phone call from my sister Liam decided that we needed to go on an official first date. Of course we had talked a little bit about what we liked to do but it wasn’t completely in depth as I knew he wanted it to be. Liam Payne seemed like he wanted to know everything and anything about me to help us out with my plan to fool my family. I literally had about two hours until Liam was coming to get me and all I was doing was standing in front of my closest with Talia and Maggie both sitting on my bed being indecisive.

“Just wear that little black number you wore to the company New Year’s party,” Talia said, “It’ll make his eyes pop out of his head.”

“Talia we’re going out to dinner,” I said, “I’m not trying to hit a home run.”

“I’ve been trying for the last year,” Talia said, “But he likes you. You showed me the contract he emailed you earlier today. Nowhere did it mention not sleeping with him. He always tells me I’m just a date nothing else.”

I just rolled my eyes and looked at the other dresses I had in my closest but stopped when Maggie spoke up.

“Just wear the black dress Mel,” she said, “He’ll love it and then you can tell him about when you wore it so then when you see Louis and you wear that to the family dinner you’ll have when you get there he can make a comment that will make Louis’s skin crawl.”

“Why do you always have to be the sensible one,” I replied and grabbed the dress and walked into my bathroom to start getting ready.

I was finishing up my makeup when there was a knock on my apartment door and I heard Talia exclaiming that she was going to get the door. I was slipping on my heels when Talia and Maggie came in to tell me Liam was waiting for me in the living room.

“Jesus Christ I forget you can clean up really nice Mel,” Talia said, “You look hot.”

I just rolled my eyes and grabbed my clutch off the dresser and looked over that the two of them.

“Make sure that Talia doesn’t burn down my apartment,” I replied looking at Maggie and she nodded her head as I left my bedroom to find Liam looking at the pictures I had scattered around my living room.

I walked into the room quietly and smiled as he was studying the picture of the trip my parents had taken me, Lilly, and Thomas to Disney World as our graduation presents.

“My parents took us to Disney World as high school and college graduation presents,” I said and Liam turned to look at me as I walked up to him and smiled at the present, “Lilly and my brother Thomas had graduated from college. Lilly with her bachelor’s and Thomas with his master’s and I had just graduated from high school. Lilly and I are four years apart. Thomas and I are six years apart.”

I looked up at him to find him looking at my outfit and then smiled at me.

“You look stunning,” he replied and I smiled lightly as he kissed my cheek making me blush since it had been months since being kissed by a boy, “and you look exactly like your sister.”

“Thanks,” I blushed as he took my hand and we waved to Maggie and Talia who were peeking out of my bedroom door.

I shut my apartment door and then followed Liam out to his car.

“So where have you worn this little number to?” he asked and I smiled lightly since I knew he could read my face like an open book.

“The company New Year’s Eve party a few weeks ago,” I replied, “Talia said all the guys were looking at me.”

“I can see why,” Liam said smiling at me, “It looks stunning on you.”

“Thanks,” I said for the millionth time and blushed.

“So are you not used to getting complimented?” he asked and I smiled lightly.

“I just haven’t been out on a date for a while,” I said, “Since the whole Louis incident.”

“And Louis is the ex-boyfriend that will be at the wedding,” he said and I nodded my head.

“Yeah,” I replied monotone, “Probably with his new girlfriend on his arm.”

“You don’t like really talking about it do you?” he asked and I shook my head no feeling the stitches on my heart being poked at.

“Not at all,” I replied, “According to my mother it’s my fault he cheated but who knows.”

“Well I think that we’ll let the subject rest for tonight,” Liam said and I smiled at him thankfully, “It is after all our first date.”

“Well then why don’t you tell me something about you Liam,” I said, “You haven’t said much about your personal life. Except for the fact that you are a bookworm like I am.”

I then noticed Liam’s demeanor change slightly and I frowned.

“It’s only if you want to Li,” I replied quietly feeling that I did something wrong, “You don’t have to tell me anything. We can make it up if you want.”

I then saw him relax slightly but I put that reaction in the back of my mind. I reached over and grabbed his hand and his quickly looked at me.

“I know you just think this is just a job but I’d like to be friends if that’s okay,” I replied being honest, “It’ll make it more believable, I think.”

Liam just smiled lightly at me but I could see the tightness behind it which made me believe that none of Liam’s clients were ever considerate of his feelings which in a way made me feel bad for Liam. Everyone deserved a friend and if I think that Liam was lonely and wanted a real friend, one he could trust with all of his secrets.

“You just tell me what you want and what you don’t want,” I added.

“Friends would be nice,” he said after a long painful minute of silence, “I’d like that.”

“Great,” I smiled feeling like I had put a small crack into Liam’s guarded heart, “So where are you taking me that I had to be dressed so fancy?”

“It’s a surprise love,” he said putting back on the playful smile had on earlier when we got into his car, “I know you said you hated those last night but you need to deal with it.”

I just pouted and Liam laughed at me which made me smile a bit. I then smiled lightly when he pulled up to the French restaurant called La Vie Bohme. It was one of the most famous in the city of London and I smirked over at Liam who was watching me as we pulled up to the valet.

“Surprise,” he said and I just laughed smiling at him.

“So you pay attention,” I laughed, “I haven’t been here in years.”

“Well now you can say you have,” he replied as we got out of the car.

Liam grabbed my hand and we walked into the restaurant. Liam walked up to the hostess podium and gave him our name and we were about to head to our table when I heard my name being called.

“Mel?” I heard a voice ask and I spun around to see Zayn, an old classmate of mine and I smiled.

“Zayn,” I grinned, “How have you been? You’re looking great.”

“I can say the same for you,” he smiled at me, “Is this a new boyfriend? Finally moved on from Louis. That’s great Mel. You were too good for him anyway.”

I gave Zayn a small tight smile since the comment stung a bit but I continued without missing a beat, I hoped.

“Zayn,” I said resting a hand on Liam’s bicep, “I’d like you to meet Liam.”

“Oh my god Mel!” I heard Perrie’s voice and I was pulled into a bone crushing hug and I giggled at Zayn’s fiancé and one of my closest friends.

“Hey Perrie,” I replied smiling at her.

“Nice to meet you mate,” Zayn said shaking Liam’s hand.

“Zayn and his fiancé Perrie and I all went to the same boarding school,” I said as I leaned against Liam and he wrapped his arm around me, “I’ve known these two for years.”

“It’s nice to meet you Liam,” Perrie smirked at me, “We’ll have to double date soon.”

“Call me Pea and we’ll set something up,” I replied.

She nodded her head smiling at us and we both followed our hostesses to our tables.

“Well that went well,” he said and I nodded my head smiling up at him.

“Thank the lord,” I replied giggling, “I’m pretty sure I would’ve been mortified if they thought I was being desperate.”

He just laughed lightly and we sat down at our table and I smiled after our hostess left.

“So we know we look normal in public,” he said, “Even on a first date.

“That’s a good thing Li,” I replied, “And technically this is our second date. Our first date was last night playing getting to know you.”

“Touché,” he said smirking.

“So do you know French Liam?” I asked smiling at him.

“Enough to get me by,” Liam smirked as our waiter came and Liam ordered our wine.

“Not bad Payne,” I smirked.

“You can do better?” he asked grinning.

“Oui,” I replied and he laughed, “I can speak all the romantic languages very fluently.”

“Well then tell me something in French,” he smirked.

Life is beautiful,” I said in French and he smirked at me.

“La vie est belle,” he tried and I giggled.

“It means life is beautiful,” I said, “I have a few friends that live in France and I talk to them over skype all the time.”

“Good to know,” he winked and I giggled at him.

Dinner went absolutely great. Liam and I acted like we had known each other for years and conversation was just easy between the two of us and that was something I was hoping for. During dinner Liam did mention that he had two older sisters and both his mom and dad. He also said they aren’t on great terms and don’t really talk to each other. I could assume it was because of his profession but I wasn’t going to press because I knew this was a touchy subject. I also told him more about my past with Louis and my family. Who was all going to be at the wedding and quizzed him about my family members.

“So you’ve been studying,” I sang after he had ordered dessert, “Someone kept the folder I gave him last night.”

After eating at the diner the night before and getting to know each other a little bit, I had pulled out a file folder with all kinds of information from what my family was like to what I wanted him to know about mine and Louis’ relationship.

“I have not,” he teased and I laughed, “I have to say though this is the most fun I have had on a job so far.”

“Well I’m happy you’re enjoying yourself,” I laughed and smiling a genuine smile in a long time, “Remember that tomorrow after work. . .”

“We’re going for final fittings,” he said, “I have it programmed in my phone.”

“Perfect,” I smiled as our dessert came, “I also have to apologize that this is moving so fast. I know you like taking your time. . .”

“It’s fine Melanie,” he chuckled, “I’ve been doing this for a while. Just relax and let it happen okay?”

“Okay,” I sighed as I took a bite of dessert.

After dinner Liam and I spent another hour just drinking a bottle of wine and getting to know each other. Liam then took me home and walked me up to my apartment. We were standing outside the door and I looked up at Liam and smiled at him.

“Thanks for taking me out for dinner Liam,” I said looking at my shoes and then back up at him, “I really had a great time.”

“Me too,” he replied smiling lightly down at me.

“So I’ll see you tomorrow then,” I said.

I opened the door but Liam put a hand on my hand that was on the knob and spun me around. Before I could respond, I felt him press his lips against mine and soon my hands were around his neck and his were on my waist. The kiss wasn’t lustful or greedy. It was simple and loving. Something I truly missed from not having a boyfriend. When our lips parted, we were both smiling at each other.

“I’ll see you tomorrow Mel,” he said smiling lightly at me.

“See you tomorrow Li,” I replied and slipped into my apartment.

The minute I shut the door, I put my head back and sighed.
“What am I getting myself into?” I asked myself quietly.
