Chapter Thirty-Seven

I walked slowly down the street holding Liam's hand. It was raining, but I didn't care. I let it soak me through as I looked up at the clouds. The streetlamp seemed eerily dim. Liam stopped under the light and took both of my hands. He started to tell me how much he loved me and then got down on one knee. As he was pulling out a small box, all of a sudden I felt a pain in my side. I put my hand where it hurt and lifted it to see it covered in blood. The world began to spin. I blacked out and fell to the pavement.

I woke up in a cold sweat and sat up straight. That was a weird dream. I still had the pain in my side. I instantly checked for blood. Nothing was there, just an odd pain. I thought about the proposal. That was just wierd. There was no way he would have done that. Liam really didn't care about me anymore. He never called, texted, emailed, or anything. He didn't even check to make sure that I made it home safely, something he always did. I didn't mean anything to him anymore.

After I fully convinced myself of that, I glanced at the clock. I would have to get up in half an hour anyway so I got up and went to the kitchen for a drink of water. I wanted to look nice for my first day of work so I put on this http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=52854946 and put my hair up. I ate a poptart and headed out the door ahead of schedule.

~LIAM'S POV~

I tossed and turned in my bed. I haven't gotten hardly any sleep since Shay left. Things just didn't seem right without her. I still couldn't believe that she ended it just like that. Did she really not care about me that much? These thoughts and plenty more have been rolling around in my head for the past month and once everyone else falls asleep, they are all I have. I slung my feet over the side of my bunk, letting them sway with the tour bus' movements. I felt a hand hit my feet.

Niall: Why are you up again?
Me: Can't sleep.
Niall: Shay?
Me: What else?

I heard a heavy sigh before his head appeared from below.

Niall: Why don't you just call her? Who says you can't just be friends?
Me: She broke it off. She probably wants nothing to do with me anymore.
Niall: If she didn't want anything to do with you then why was she with you that whole time?
Me: Who knows? Lonliness? Getting back at Harry?
Niall: You know that isn't true.
Me: Not really. Besides, if she did care, why hasn't she asked you about me at all?

He fell silent. I had seen all of his messages with her. It was my only connection to her. He thought I was ridiculous, but I didn't care.

Niall: Just text her, mate. You won't know until you do.
Me: No. I'm pretty sure she made herself clear that we were done and I am no longer a part of her life.
Niall: That isn't what she meant.
Me: Doesn't really matter now, though, does it?

He shut his mouth and laid back in his bed. I reached up on the shelf above my bunk and grabbed the magazine that had been sitting up there for months. I picked my legs up and laid back down. I flipped through the pages full of shining rings until I got to the one that I had marked. My finger traced the outline of the circle I had drawn around the silver ring. I can't believe I was actually going to ask her to marry me. My mistake. I put it back on the shelf and grabbed my iPod. I started playing Olly Murs' I've Tried Everything. It seemed like a pretty appropriate song. I listed to the words.

"All the days I missed her, can't break down,
can't break up sleepless nights that never end
I wish I could pretend, ohhh.
I can't do this anymore.
I've tried everything, to get you off my mind."

Yet again I tried to sleep. I can't keep living like this.

~SHAY'S POV~

When I arrived at the arena, I stopped at the security gate and had to give them my name and show them my ID before I could get inside. I promptly parked and walked to the room that I had been instructed to wait at. Soon a man approached me with a smile and a hand held out to shake.

Man: Hello you must be Shay! It's nice to finally meet you. I'm George and I head up the lighting and sound crews here.

I shook his offered hand and returned his smile. He seemed like a very nice man, a bit older. He had probably worked his way up over the years.

Me: It's nice to meet you too!
George: Ok well let me start by saying welcome and congratulations! The department interviewed several people and chose you so you must show quite some promise! This is a paid position, as they have already explained. You will have certain hours to work with the equipment and training sessions. We expect you to work any concerts or any other performances that use this venue. Since you are not extremely familiar with all of the equipment here yet, you will be working more on the relations side. This means that you will be working between the performers and the tech crew more than just working on the tech crew.

He continued on about everything that I would be doing and I hung on every word. It all seemed so interesting! He said that there were several concerts coming up and that I had about a week to learn and prepare for them before I started really getting into my work. I was so excited. I started my training and the day ended all too soon. I met a lot of the crew and they all seemed super sweet. I said my goodbyes and drove home.

I put on my headset so that I would never loose contact with the rest of the tech crew. I made sure everyone could hear me and then I took a deep breath. No sweat. I can do this! The best part of this was that I actually got to work with the bands personally! Today is my first concert here. I don't know this band, but George said that they were great to work with. They wouldn't be here for a little while longer so I went to the lighting boards and helped the lighting crew run a few test and get sets finalized. Soon I was getting called to the backstage door.

I walked briskly back through the hallways. I passed dressing rooms, hair and makeup rooms, and several other rooms that most people didn't get to see. This was such a cool job! I finally got to the backstage door and saw a group that I presumed was the band. I introduced myself and they all seemed very pleasant. I led them to their dressing rooms to drop off their bags and then we walked to the stage. They started sound check, running through all of their sets. I worked a little with the sound technicians while they adjusted things.

As they finished up, management radioed me that the doors were opening soon and to clear the stage area. I relayed the message to the band and then verified that we were out of the performance area. I escorted them back to their dressing room to get their outfits ready as well as hair and makeup. After I dropped them off, I went back and peeked out the side curtain. People were already slowly trickling in. After a bit of watching, I returned to the dressing room and sat just inside, waiting for further instructions. This job was so much fun!

Everything went smoothly the rest of the night. I got the band members to their places ahead of time and everything worked properly. I finished up after the concert and bid them goodbye as they boarded their tour bus yet again. I checked the schedule before leaving. There was another concert in a couple of days, but this time I recognized the band. Big Time Rush.
