Chapter Thirty-Six

I walked into my house, exhausted from another day of classes. The last thing I wanted to do was to more school work, but I didn't have a choice. I had to finish my paper by tomorrow so it was time to buckle down. After greeting my family, I threw my bag on the floor and plopped onto my bed. It felt so good that I didn't want to move. I considered taking a nap, but that idea was pushed quickly from my mind as the home phone began to ring. My mother was up to her elbows in soapy water as she washed the dishes and Austin was playing soccer with some friends in the backyard, so I had to answer. Luckily, there is a phone in my room, so I sat up and put it up to my ear.

Me: Hello?
Man: Hello. Is Shay Walker available?
Me: That would be me.
Man: Perfect! My name is Blake and I'm calling on behalf of the Chesapeake Arena to tell you that you have been selected for a year-long internship here with us in the lighting and sound department.

I held back a squeal and composed myself.

Me: That's awesome!
Blake: I'm glad you are excited. You will start next week. We will email you everything you need to know before you come and give you some phone numbers in case you need anything else.
Me: Sounds perfect! Thank you so much!
Blake: No problem! Have a nice day!
Me: You too!

I hung up the phone and sat there in disbelief. I got it. My mom knew there was a call, but didn't know what happened so she yelled from the kitchen.

Mom: Shay, honey? Who was it?

Instead of yelling back, I hopped off of my bed and ran to the kitchen. I nearly tackled her in a hug.

Mom: What's wrong?
Me: Nothing! I got the internship!
Mom: That's awesome! I'm so proud of you!

She kissed me on the forehead since she couldn't hug me and I went back to my room. Now I had a reason to study. I needed to know this stuff so that I could do well and keep this job. Within several hours, I was done. I checked my email to see what they had in store for me. There were several new messages. I saw the one from the Chesapeake lighting and sound crew, but there were a few from the UK that grabbed my attention.

One was from Brooke. She just talked about how boring everything was without me and the boys and how much she missed us. She told me about classes and new things that were happening at the university there. She said something about a dance coming up that she wanted to go to, but didn't have a date to since Louis is on tour. I bet she goes with Rose and they have a blast anyways.

The next message was from Rose herself. She talked about missing me and missing London. She talked about all of the new things happening in Ireland and how the press was always following her around now since they found out about her and Niall. She didn't really feel comfortable with it, but was starting to get a little better about it.

The next email was from Harry. It was a fairly standard, friendly email. He told me about some of the exciting things they had seen and done on tour and asked about how things were here. I was glad we were back to friends.

I replied to Brooke's, Rose's, and Harry's messages before continuing on.

Then there was one from Niall. He told me all about tour life. He was having a blast! He talked about getting to meet fans, signings, and the awesome concerts. He said that all of the boys were having the times of their lives, but also missing us girls. He told me several funny stories about them, but never once mentioned Liam. I assumed that was on purpose and that he was trying to avoid a touchy subject, but I wanted to know what was going on.

I haven't heard from Liam in over a month now and I had no clue what was going on in his life. It is so strange to be a part of nearly every minute of someone's life for the whole summer and then suddenly be completely cut off for that long without hearing anything about them (besides news reports, of course). I hated not being a part of his life at all. Worst of all, I knew it was my fault. I began to respond and ask Niall how Liam was, telling him how much I missed him, but then my mind went back to our breakup like a video in my head.
~~~~~
Me: I don't think continuing this relationship is a good idea.
I avoided his gaze and looked at the picture on the wall.
Liam: You're giving up?
Me: I just think it is for the best if we go our separate ways and now is as good a time as ever.
Liam: If that is what you want.
I nodded, not letting my eyes leave the wall.
Me: I can finish up. There are only a couple of things left.
Liam: Then I guess I will go back to my place.
I heard him walk to the door, but then he stopped.
Liam: Will I ever see you again?
I finally decided to look at him one last time. His eyes looked glossy as he stood there at the door. I shrugged.
Me: I'm sure I will make it back to England eventually.
Liam: Promise to come see me when you do?
I nodded.
Me: Promise.
With that he turned and was gone.
~~~~~
How could I have let that happen? I let him walk out of my life, even after seeing the hurt in his eyes. I should be skyping him everyday telling him how much I miss him and want to be with him. He had stopped at the door. He didn't want to go, but I pushed him away anyways. And now look where we were: not talking at all. I guess we just weren't meant to be. I need to move on. I backspaced until everything I had said about Liam was completely erased, typed a simple message about being excited for them touring, and hit send.

I needed to quit living in the past and move on. I was in a new place with new people. I have a life of my own and it doesn't revolve around one curly-haired, brown-eyed, british boy that lived a thousand miles away.
