Transatlanticism
Chapter VI.
Throughout the entire ride back to mine, I couldn’t stop thinking about the figure of Harry in my father’s hallway. He was different. He wasn’t as I remembered him. He was...nice. Kind. Almost as if he’d been through a life changing experience these months we’ve been apart. I didn’t recognize him anymore. He has always treated me right when we were intimate but now, when we’re not even friends and are far from being close, he still offered me his good face. But what was especially puzzling, he was offering me his good face. There was something wrong. He wanted something. I just didn’t know what yet.
**
“Maybe you’re overanalyzing things, Broke?” Hayden stated while widening her eyes at me and sending me one of her glares. I sighed, taking a sip of my tea.
“What else could it possibly be, Hay? He’s been in my dad’s house!” I shook my head and threw it over the armrest of our couch. Hayden was sitting opposite of me, on one of our armchairs and I was laying on our couch, suddenly mesmerized by our ceiling. I heard her sigh.
“You’re making a villain out of him.” She stated simply and I looked at her, daggers shooting out of my eyes.
“He is the villain, Hayden!” she rolled her eyes.
“You know what I meant. He’s not that type of a villain. He wouldn’t use you just to get to your father. Nevertheless, why would he? He has bunch of money, Broke.” She stated and I fell into a state of deep thoughts, still not being able to figure out what he had been doing in my father’s home. I myself knew that this little theory of mine made no sense in any dimension but at least it was something. Right now, I have nothing.
Hayden and I were pulled out of our thoughts by the throbbing sound of my phone in the other room. I got up and ran towards my room, trying to answer it before it rang off. I have succeeded in my attempts and answered the phone without looking at the caller ID.
“Broke? You sound as if you’ve been running to answer my call.” The voice on the other side relaxed my nerves.
“Father, don’t flatter yourself.” I rolled my eyes and laughed.
“Anyway, I’m calling to let you know who the biggest sponsor of our school is. I thought you’d want to know considering the fact you’ve done an excellent job on our party.” I thought about it for a second.
“Sure, tell me.” I answered.
“It’s One Direction.”
“It’s who?”
**
“Holly shit.” Hayden widened her eyes when I had told her about what I’ve heard from my father.
“I know.” I threw my body against my bed. My life was officially over, I moaned. I felt the bed sink in when Hayden sat on the foot of it.
“I’m sorry, Broke. What are you going to do?” she looked at me sympathetically.
“Except lounging around with him?” I hit my head against the pillow a couple of times before I felt the tears prick at my eyes.
“Broke, are you crying?” Hayden smiled at me.
“I hate him so much!” I wined and Hayden laughed as she hugged me and pulled me close.
“It’s alright, honey, I’m sure he hates you as well.”
“He did this on purpose! He knew what he was doing and he did it because he hates me and... and... Why does he hate me so much?” I cried into her chest.
“He doesn’t. Trust me, he doesn’t.”
**
I woke up the next morning to the sound of my phone going off. Hayden was still next to me and we were cuddled up together. My head was pounding from all the crying so I didn’t even bother to look at my caller ID before I answered.
“H-hello?” I sounded like death and was aware of that.
“Broke?” I heard an amused voice on the other side of the line but I wasn’t awake enough to register who it was.
“Yeah... W-who’s this?” I asked.
“It’s me, Broke. It’s Harry.” He whispered and suddenly, I was completely awake.
“H-Harry? What is it?” I asked as I got out of the bed and started pacing my room.
“I just... It’s nothing, really. I just wanted to...maybe talk.” He was extremely quiet, as if he was afraid someone might hear him. I smiled at his shyness.
“We could talk, I guess.” I smiled and I felt him do the same.
“Your father gave me your number, I hope you don’t mind.”
“Well, I don’t mind he gave it to you, but I hope he doesn’t just share it around like that.” He laughed and I giggled a bit, hearing his laugh again. It sounded like it always did. Bubbly. Perfect.
“I also hope he doesn’t, I wouldn’t want any guy to have it.” We both laughed and that’s when Hayden sort of moaned my name.
“Broke, who is it?” she had a really raspy voice in the morning, she almost sounded like a boy.
“It’s Harry, go back to sleep.” I put my hand over my phone so Harry couldn’t hear our conversation.
“I’m sorry about that.” I said into my phone.
“It’s fine. I mean... God, I feel stupid.” He sighed leaving me confused.
“What? Why?”
“I guess I-I never actually thought this through. I mean... I ignored the fact you might have company...” he trailed off into a sigh and I laughed at the inconvenient situation.
“Oh, Harry.” I laughed “It’s just Hayden. She just has a really raspy voice in the morning.” I laughed.
“Why are you guys talking about me?” I heard Hayden enter the room.
“Harry thought you were a guy.” I laughed and she wrinkled her nose.
“Thanks a lot, Harry!” she screamed and I laughed, leaving for my room and closing the door behind me.
“Are you still here?” I asked and heard him chuckle.
“I’m still here.” I smiled hoping the phone call wasn’t the only thing he was talking about.
“So, I was wondering if you’d like to come to mine for supper tonight? Maybe hang out a little? It will be just you and me.” He stated sweetly and I didn’t have it in me to say no.
“You don’t hate me anymore?” I bit on my lower lip and he chuckled.
“I’ll always hate you, Broke. You’re the only one I’ll ever hate.” His voice was still and low and just perfect. I’ve missed him so much I’ve never actually let it sink in completely.
“I feel the same way about you.” I said sarcastically and we both laughed. After our laughter died out there was a long moment of silence, finally interrupted by him clearing his throat.
“Well, this is my number so text me your address. I’ll come pick you up at 7, is that okay?” he asked and I nodded to myself.
“It is. I’ll see you tonight.” I exclaimed.
“Yeah, I’ll see you.” He said before we both hung up. I exited my room and was met with a smiling Hayden.
“Sooo...what did lover boy say?” she smiled at me and that’s when I realized I’ve never asked about her date.
“Hmm, you first.” I smiled and we both sat on our couch.
