All I Want For Christmas Is You

Chapter 77

* Fast forwards to summer. June 19th. Cat doesn't go to college, and has a job as a waitress at the local barbecue joint. She misses Harry, but she pushes it out of her life. She knows that Harry loves Cara. Not her, and she can't compete with a British model. *

CAT'S POV:

"Table 18 needs more tea Cat," one of the hostesses yelled as I nodded and walked over to the pitchers of tea and ice water on the bar counter. I wiped the sweat from my forehead onto my upper sleeve and picked up the pitcher and went over to the table. Sitting at the table was the cult of preps and the football guys. Of course I would have to deal with this table. "Tea anyone?" I asked, being as nice as humanly possible. "Sure, I bet it's crazy to think you have to work even though your boyfriend is like Harry Styles," the main girl yelled, flipping her shiny blonde hair behind her shoulders. She gave me an evil, devious smile, and I rolled my eyes and picked up her glass to fill it with tea, but the pitcher poured too much ice and all the tea poured out onto their table, the floor and my hip apron. I sighed heavily, and picked up the chucks of ice as I slammed her glass on the table, making a very loud noise. "You are such..a good waitress," the main girl said setting her cheek ever so gently on her cheek. I rolled my eyes again and walked back quickly into the kitchen. The hostess was staring at me. "Cat, did you get that table?" she asked. I shrugged. "Whatever. I'm only here to get gas money. It's not like I actually enjoy working here," I sighed, not making eye contact. The hostess looked at me but the door rang, meaning someone just entered the restaurant. "Oh kay, well... I gotta set these people at a table. I wish you luck Cat. Don't be upset. You'll be in college soon enough," the hostess answered as she walked off and left me sitting there in my sweaty, greasy T-shirt. I sighed and rubbed a drip of sweat off of my cheek. It was so hot inside since the air conditioner went out, but loads of people are still entering in. I guess our food is just that good. "Hello? Waitress?!" the preppy girl yelled at me. It took me a minute to get up, but I managed to do so. I walked slowly over to her and brought the pitcher of tea. "Here you go. If you want it so bad, do it yourself," I said smartly, setting the pitcher right in front of her. She gasped and glared at me, shaking her bangs out of her face. "What the hell is wrong with you?" she yelled, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "Nothing. I guess I just don't like working. Because apparently I'm dating Harry Styles. Which I am NOT. If I was dating him, do you think I would be working here in this grease trap and have to deal with your mouth? I don't think so," I replied, leaving the prep in complete silence, with her mouth dropped open in shock. "Oh no she did not," I heard her mumble to her friends and they too glared at me. I walked away and untied my apron, setting it on the counter where the hostess was sitting at, playing on her phone. "Listen, I have to go home. Get my table for me," I said as the hostess stared at me questionably, and watched as I walked out the door.

I felt the heat of the Texas sun, burn my skin as I walked to my car. I finally got my license, and now I was driving my mom's old car. It brought back memories but it was pretty nice. I walked to the drivers side door and pulled out the key to unlock the door. I shoved the rusty key in the door and twisted it until it unlocked. I pulled open the door and I felt the rush of heat escape the vehicle from the summer sun. I sat inside and started the car and began to drive off when I got a text message. I didn't dare to look at my phone while I was driving. I didn't want to be the next victim in my family to get in a wreck.

I pulled over at a gas station and parked in front of the pump. I pulled my phone out of my short's pocket and opened the message. It was from Karla. Wow. She hasn't talked to me in like forever.

"Hey girlie. Sorry, been busy lately. How are you?"

I didn't answer, I just closed it and slid my phone back into my pocket. I continued and finished my drive home.

"You're home early. I thought you had the late shift tonight?" Aunt Mae asked as I passed her. "Yeah. I DID," I said, flopping down on a bar stool and taking a drink from below the counter and opened it and took a sip. It was Razzleberry Peace Tea. My favorite.

"Why are you home then?" Aunt Mae continued. I sighed and jolted to her. "I can't stand the restaurant anymore. I just want to go back to school," I sobbed, leaning on the cool countertop. "You want to go to college? Well then why don't you apply? I know you can get into a school before August!" Aunt Mae suggested. I shook my head. She doesn't understand. "No Aunt Mae. I want to go back to high school," I continued to give my baby sob. Aunt Mae sighed. "Cat, I'm sorry. You can't do that. High school is a one time thing," she finished as she left the room. She left me sitting there with my tea alone. "WAIT! Where's Val?" I asked across the room to Aunt Mae. "She's over at a friend's house. She's spending the night. Katie is at her cheer class if you were wondering," Aunt Mae answered as she continued to leave. "Awesome," I mumbled as I played around with the can of tea. It's whatever.
