Bored and Broken

Thirty Nine

One month later (March 15)

Harry's POV

"Maybe you could change that." She points to a few words. "So it's different in the first and second verse."

I bite the tip of my pen and rack my brain for a way to change the song. Adie sits quietly, resuming twisting her ring around on her finger while she waits for me to think of something. I've started writing songs around her just because when I'm home I want to be with her.

"I can't think of anything," I whine. Adie gently takes the pad of paper out of my hands and reads through the words. I watch her intently.

She's been doing so well lately. She's slowly but surely getting better. She's eating a little more and she has been using full sentences for the last week or so. Dr. Stanson has been making visits to our house pretty much whenever she has spare time. I wish we would have called her right away because she has helped Adie way more than me and my mum did. She seems to be working through things. She doesn't zone out as much any more and she seems much more functional. She's still sad, though; she's actually crying now. Usually she tries to hide it but I can always tell and it breaks my heart. I just don't want her to be hurting anymore.

The other day I tried to get Adie to draw. The doctor said that it may help her to let out some of her emotions; Adie told me that's what she used it for before too. It mades sense to me, but she just stared at the page for about an hour. I finally took it away before she got worse again. She'll draw when she's ready.

She scratches out a few words and writes something in before handing it back to me. I'm writing a new song for the band called One Thing and something just wasn't right about it. Adie may have just solved my problem.

"Sing it for me," she says softly. She looks up at me with her beautiful green eyes and I smile as I nod in agreement. I can't say no to her.

"Just until the part you changed," I bargain. She nods and turns onto her side to watch me.

"I tried playin it cool
But when I'm lookin at you
I can't ever be brave
'Cuz you make my heart race

Shot me out of the sky
You're my kryptonite
You keep making me weak
Yeah, frozen and can't breathe

Something's gotta give now
Cuz I'm dying just to make you see
That I need you here with me now
Cuz you've got that one thing.
"

"I like it," she says quietly.

"Yeah, it's definitely better. I'll show the guys tomorrow at school." I put the pad down on the bedside table and mimic her position, tucking one hand under my head. I went so long without her looking me in the eye and now that she is I feel like the only thing I want to do is sit here and stare at her. It's probably creepy as fuck but I don't really care to be honest.

"Louis wanted me to tell you that he's going to come over tomorrow after school. He won't be here for long, though. They're all going to a party or something."

She nods and I freeze as her hand reaches towards me. She takes the fabric of my collar between her fingers and gently runs them down my shirt. I feel like I'm twelve years old again and I have no idea how to act around girls. I'm so scared of scaring her. It's going to drive me insane.

"Are you hungry?" I ask quietly to distract myself. She shrugs. "I know you didn't want dinner before but there's some left over for you in the fridge."

She shakes her head and drops her hand from my shirt, letting it fall onto mine. I slowly spread my fingers so hers can fall between and she watches our hands like it's the most interesting thing in the world as our fingers lace together. I don't dare say another word at this point; I just watch her face and memorize everything I see. She showered earlier and her hair is still a little bit wet, a few pieces refusing to stay tucked behind her ear. She hasn't worn make up in weeks and I've decided that I like her better this way. She's so beautiful.

My phone starts buzzing in my pocket and I mentally curse at it for the horrible timing. She slowly releases my hand and turns onto her back, staring up at the ceiling and fiddling with her ring again. The sleeve of her sweater falls down her arm and my heart does leap when I realize that she's wearing the bracelet I gave her.

I get my phone out of my pocket and check the caller ID before answering the call. What the hell?

"Hello?" I answer, completely confused. It has to be a pocket dial or a wrong number or something. I haven't spoken to Courtney in months.

"Hey Harry," she says happily.

"Umm hi...."

"So I know you've been busy with Madison being like depressed or whatever, but I really was hoping you'd come to my party tomorrow night! All your friends are going and it's going to be fun, I promise." I breathe deeply and get up to walk out of Adie's room. She is not hearing this, no way.

"First of all, it's Adison," I correct through gritted teeth. "Second, I don't want to go to your fucking party, Courtney. I have more important shit to deal with."

"You've gotten boring," she says, whining a little. "You used to come out all the time before you started dating Allison."

"Are you fucking stupid? I just said, her name is Adison. And I haven't been going to your stupid parties because they're a fucking waste of time."

"You don't have to be so rude about it."

"Why don't you just do us both a favour and not call me again." With that I hang up. Who is so fucking dumb not to get a name right? And why the fuck would she call me? I don't even look at her at school let alone talk to her. I haven't gone out since New Years Eve, why would I go out now? I don't care about their stupid parties, being here is way more important. I take a deep breath before walking back to Adie's room.

"Are you okay?" she asks quietly.

"Yeah, of course. You sure you don't want some food?"

She shakes her head and I reluctantly drop the subject. She didn't have any extra weight to lose in the first place and I wouldn't be surprised it she's dropped ten pounds. She's wasting away. I climb into bed next to her and keep my body above the covers that she is now covered by. I guess it is getting late.

"Do you want to go to sleep?" I ask. She nods. I sigh quietly and nod my head. "Okay." After a minute I start to get up, but she puts her hand on my arm. I turn back around and she pulls the covers back for me. What...

"Stay," she requests softly. I do my best not to laugh in excitement.

"I'm going to put some pajamas on. I'll be right back." She nods and I smile as I walk out of the room, pumping my fist in the air when I get to my closet. I'm such a loser.

I change as fast as possible and walk back to Adie's room. Not sure how mum would feel about this, but I honestly don't care. I missed this so much; it's so hard to sleep without her. I lift the covers around me and lay on my side facing Adie. I don't know what she wants from me and I'm scared to even move right now. She just stares back at me for a minute or two before shuffling over a little so she's closer to me. I feel like I can't breathe.

"Harry," she whispers. "I'm not afraid of you." She reaches up and places her palm against my cheek.

"I don't...I don't know what..."

She nods and moves a little closer again and I feel like I look like a deer in headlights right now. My body is completely alert and this proximity...it's like we're starting all over again.

"I trust you," she says quietly. She lifts her hand from my cheek and reaches down for mine. I watch her face as she lifts my arm and drapes it over her waist. She moves closer again so that her head is resting on the same pillow as mine, our faces only inches apart. She just looks up at me and after a few moments I finally force myself to move, pressing my hand to her back and moving her slightly closer to me. She smiles ever so slightly and closes her eyes, nestling against my chest. I smile to myself and breathe deeply, contentedly, inhaling the sweet scent of her shampoo. Damn, I missed this.

"Goodnight," I whisper. I gently press my lips to her forehead and she just sighs against my chest. I feel her move one of her feet under one of mine and practically become giddy as a result. This may be something really insignificant, but to me it seems like a huge step. Plus I've missed her so much.

"Harry."

I squeeze my eyes shut and try to roll onto my stomach, but I'm stopped by something laying in front of me.

"Harry, you're going to be late for school," my mum says. I blink a few times and when my eyes adjust I realize that I'm still in Adie's room. I look down and smile slightly at Adie's sleeping figure in front of me, my arm still wrapped tight around her in the same position we fell asleep in. I try to wipe the smile away as I slowly look over at my mother. She doesn't look pissed..that's a good sign.

"Don't get used to this," she says quietly, pointing back and forth between Adie and I. "Get up, you're going to be late." I frown as she walks out. Don't get used to this? Does she mean sleeping in Adie's bed or being with her at all?

Adie stirs a little as I reluctantly remove my hand from around her waist. I kiss her forehead softly before pushing back the covers so I can get out of bed. When I'm up I make sure the covers are tight around her shoulders before walking over to my room. After a quick shower I get dressed and go to the kitchen for some cereal. My mother is sitting at the breakfast bar sipping her coffee.

"Are you going out tonight?" she asks.

"What do you think?"

"Harry, you can't spend every second here with her."

"Why not?" I challenge, getting a bowl and taking the seat next to her. She sighs.

"Louis told me there's a party tonight. I think you should go," she says hesitantly. I practically choke on my food.

"What? Are you serious?" She nods.

"You're going," she says, standing and putting her mug in the sink. She walks away without another word. Did my mum just tell me to go to a party?

"Anyway she was all pissed because she thinks I never hang out with her friends," Louis says, explaining an argument he had with Eleanor. They aren't actually together yet but they hang out a lot.

"You don't," I remind him, turning onto my street.

"They're no fun!" he defends. "I went to one of their parties and it was so boring. It's way better if she hangs out with us."

"Lou, you're going to have to hang out with her friends."

"I know," he groans. I laugh as we pull into the driveway. Adie hasn't been at school in a long time and I have no idea how she's going to manage to pass this year. We go into the house and first get ourselves some food- Louis' idea not mine. When he's finally ready we go down the hall to Adie's room where she's sitting. And doing something.

"Hey Ads," I say, walking over to the bed. I set some food down on the bedside table and she looks up briefly to acknowledge me.

"Hey Adie," Louis says, jumping onto the foot of the bed. He spills some of his food in the process and Adie looks up with a small smile on her face. "What's up?"

She shrugs and I sit down next to her, peering over to see what she's doing. My mouth drops open. She's drawing. I look at Louis, who looks confused, and then back to the page. She's drawing me.

"What?" Louis asks. I look at him again and sit down next to Adie. She doesn't seem bothered at all by the fact that I can see what she's doing. Before she definitely would have been embarrassed or shy or something but now..she really doesn't care. And that picture looks scarily like me. It's so accurate. I can't say anything so eventually Louis gets up and walks around to the other side of the bed to see for himself.

"Woah," he says quietly. "That's definitely you, Harry."

I look up at him and roll my eyes. What a genius. Adie continues swiping her pencil across the page, currently making my hair darker. I'm super impressed with how well she is doing this but I don't get it. Why is she drawing me?

"Adie, I would like to enlist your help," Louis says, walking back to the end of the bed and sitting where he was before. "There's a party tonight and Harry here refuses to go with us."

I stare open mouthed at my friend. What the hell is he doing? First he tells my mum about it and now he's going to make Adie feel guilty because I'm staying home for her? I want to be here!

"A party?" she asks softly, looking at Louis and then up at me. I can't help but smile at her.

"Yeah, nothing too crazy. We have tried to convince him all day to come with us, but he won't budge. I think you might be the only one that will be able to convince him," Louis says, laying on his side. I glare at him. The fuck.

"I don't want to go," I repeat for the millionth time today. "I don't feel like going to a party."

"See," he says, looking at Adie but pointing at me. "Difficult. I don't know how you put up with him all the time."

Adie sets her pad of paper down beside her and pulls her legs out from under the blankets. I immediately feel like covering them up, since she's wearing tiny little shorts and her pretty little legs seem to be drawing not only my eyes, but Louis' as well. I extend my let and kick him in the shins.

"Ow! Geez, okay fine you don't have to go."

"Thank you."

"You should go," Adie says. We both look at her. My mouth drops open slightly. That is not what I wanted her to say. "It will be fun."

"I don't want to go," I remind her. One corner of her mouth tugs up slightly.

"You'll have fun," she says softly. She reaches over and puts her hand on my lap.

"That's what I said!" Louis shouts, making Adie jump a little. "Also, that drawing is incredible. Looks a scary amount like Harry. You made him a little too attractive, though."

"Lou, that is such a weird thing to say for so many reasons," I exclaim. He shrugs. "It is really good." I squeeze Adie's hand. "Why'd you draw me?"

She shrugs. "It just happened."

"I'm really glad that you're drawing again," I say, smiling at her. She looks up at me and nods.

"Are you sure you don't need anything? My mum is going to be home soon I think. Maybe I should just wait with you until she gets back."

"Harry, I'm fine," she says softly. I sigh and lay on the bed beside her. She reaches over and traces her thumb along my bottom lip.

"Maybe I should stay home," I suggest. "I really don't want to go."

She shakes her head. "Go. They're waiting."

"Fine," I agree reluctantly. Her hand drops and I frown slightly. "Call me if you need me, okay? I won't be back very late and I'm not going to drink so I'll be able to drive home if you need me to."

"I'm fine."

"Alright. I should go before I change my mind." She nods and I sit up, looking down at her for a moment. I'm going to take a chance here. I slowly lean forward and watch her for a reaction, gently pressing my lips to her forehead. She doesn't move or say anything, but I can hear her sigh. I never do that unless she's asleep. Maybe now that'll change.

"Sleep well, Ads. I'll be home soon, okay?"

She nods once and I take a deep breath as I get up, not looking back at her as I walk out of her room. I really don't want to go tonight. The only reason I agreed is because she said I should go. Louis leans against the front door while he waits for me.

"Let's go," I mumble, getting my jacket and following Louis outside. I do not intend on staying at this party long. Louis said there will be twenty people or so, so it shouldn't be anything too crazy. I'm glad, because I really don't want to deal with drunk teenagers right now.

"So the party might be a little bigger than I thought," Louis says as we get closer to Courtney's house.

"What? What do you mean?"

"Well...most of the school will probably be there."

"What?!" I yell.

"Come on, Harry. Lighten up, alright? It's going to be a good night."

When we pull up to the house I mentally kick Louis in the balls. I think by twenty he meant 200 people. Probably not that many, but the house looks completely packed and the music is so loud I can hear what song is playing from here. I look at Louis and glare.

"I'm going to kill you."
