As Fragile as Glass

I woke up the next morning around 10. I threw on a dark red tank top and some jean shorts. I made my way to the kitchen. Liam was already awake and sitting at the table eating a bowl of Fruit Loops.

"Morning sis," he said with his mouth full.

I giggled. "I see you still like Fruit Loops."

He faked shock. "Of course. Isn't it a sin to not like Fruit Loops?"

"Just don't eat too much of it. It's chock full of sugar," I warned.

Liam rolled his eyes. "Yes mom," he teased.

My smile faded and I felt tears began to burn my eyes as I thought about my mom. My poor dead mom.

Liam stood up and came over.

"Oh shit, Summer I'm so sorry. I am an idior. I wasn't thinking," he said as he gave me a hug.

I wrapped my arms around him as tears made their way down my cheeks.

"It's ok. You didn't mean to."

We stood there for a few minutes until the sound of my sobbing faded. I stepped away from him and wiped away my tears.

"Are you okay?" Liam asked hurriedly.

I nodded and started opening and shouting the cabinets till I found the cereal.

"Hypocrite," Liam accused as I poured myself a bowl of Fruit Loops.

I stuck my tongue out at him and sat on the counter.

"Do you just not like chairs?" Liam asked me.

I shrugged. "Eh."

We ate in silence for a little bit before I spoke.

"Do you miss them?" I asked

Liam froze mid bite. He put his spoon back in the bowl.

"Miss who?" He asked.

"Mom and Dad."

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. "That's a difficult question sis."

I silently waited on him to continue.

"Honestly I don't know. I hadn't seen them in five years. Our relationship was always rocky. I was never really close to them like you were."

"Not really," I said.

"What do you mean?"

I shrugged. "We weren't that close after you left."

Liam looked like he wanted to ask more questions but he knew me well enough to know not to pry.

"Anyways, we need to talk about school. I know you are graduating in two months but we need to get you enrolled before they begin testing," Liam said.

I burst out laughing.

Liam looked confused. "What's so funny?"

"I've already graduated. I graduated early."

"Oh thank God cause I have no idea how to enroll someone in school," Liam said sheepishly.

I laughed.

"So I have a smart sister huh?" Liam said proudly.

"Hell yeah! It took you long enough to realize it," I said as we both laughed.

"Whatever. Finish eating and get your ass in the car. I don't need to be late," Liam said.
