Chapter 31

Lana's POV

"I still haven't seen Harry. Have you?" I look around the house again and El and Louis both shake their heads. Niall is here but I've been avoiding him. I can't deal with that right now. I can't believe Harry isn't here. He knows how nervous this makes me.

"Try to relax. He'll be here," Louis assures me.

"I need some air." I walk through the house and to the back yard. There's no areas that are too crowded; it's pretty warm out and it's not raining, so people are outside too. Theres a bunch swimming, some inside and some by the bonfire. I walk to the side of the house and dial Harry's number for the zillionth time. I don't understand why he's angry at me. I defended him!

"Come on. Come on, pick up," I mutter under my breath. after the fifth ring I give up and hang up the phone. I decide to text him as well.

Please come to the party. I need you here with me. I love you. xx

I slide my phone back into my pocket and walk back inside the house to find Louis and Eleanor. Instead I run into Niall.

"Woah sorr-" he looks up and smiles when he realizes it's me. "Hey. You look great."

"Thanks." I look down and tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. "We should probably talk."

"Not necessary." I look back up to see him still smiling at me. "Lan, I know nothing will ever happen with us. I wasn't lying when I said that I'm okay with that."

"I'm not talking about that. Although, I do think we should eventually talk about that too." He laughs and nods to the back door. We walk out and sit on two of the patio chairs on the far side of the pool so people won't over hear. "I was talking about what you said to Harry."

"Oh. That."

"Yeah. Is that really how you feel? You really think he's ruining my life?"

He sighs and shrugs his shoulders. "I know how happy you guys make each other. I see it. I also know what losing him did to you. And whenever you guys fight you're just a mess."

"Isn't that the way love is? It's crazy and irrational and horrible. It's also beautiful and spontaneous and incredible. Haven't you ever loved someone so much it hurt?" He shakes his head slightly without meeting my eyes. "It sucks sometimes. But most of the time it's amazing, Niall. I love him so much. I need you to be okay with that. He's not going anywhere, not if I can help it."

"What if he hurts you again? What then?"

"He won't."

Harry's POV

Please come to the party. I need you here with me. I love you. xx

I read the text four times before I finally throw my phone on the passenger seat. I've been sitting in my car for about a half hour debating whether or not I should go to the party at Kyle's house. I really don't want to see Niall right now, but I also know that Lana is there and she's probably having a hard time. I don't want to be a dick and make her do this on her own. I don't even know why I'm so pissed!

Maybe because my best fucking friend is in love with my girlfriend. I knew it, too. I knew it and no one believed me. And what was all that shit about me not being good enough for her. I obviously know that, but why was he screaming at me? And he blamed me for everything! What a dick.

Is he right? Is all of this my fault? Do I ruin everything? Maybe Lana would be better off without me.

No, we already tried that. Didn't work for either of us. Fuck I hate thinking so much.

I finally decide to drive to the party; slowly so I can figure my shit out. What am I supposed to say to Lana? I acted kind of mean earlier when Niall was flirting with her. I just got jealous. She probably thought I was so bipolar. Then Niall screamed at me...and said everything I hoped wasn't true. He was right. Lana and I drive each other insane. We piss each other off. But we also make each other so fucking happy. If this was one of those unhealthy relationships with tons of screaming and all kinds of problems, we wouldn't be in it. Sure we have our problems, but what couple doesn't? Niall doesn't see that. No one gets it.

I finally pull up to Kyle's house and grab my phone from the seat next to me. When I get to the house I immediately search for Lana's wavy blonde hair. I recognize a bunch of people from high school and they all say hi to me while I walk through the house.

"Harry!"

I turn and see el and Louis in the kitchen. Why is it they always hang out in the kitchen at parties? I head towards them and Louis holds a beer out to me.

"I'm good. Where is she?"

"Outside I think. Why are you so late?"

"Doesn't matter. I need to go find Lana." I walk outside and see a bunch of people swimming, and I can see the glow of a fire further back and there's people all over the place. My eyes scan the yard and I finally see Lana sitting on the far side of the patio. With Niall. Fantastic. They're not talking. He looks deep in thought and she's just staring at him. She looks like she's waiting for something. I walk over there with my hands in my pockets so I don't punch the living shit out of him.

He sees me first and stands up. Lana looks at him confused, then follows his gaze to me. Her face lights up and it sends chills down my spine. She stands from her chair as well and runs over to me. She runs right past Niall and jumps into my open arms. She wraps her arms around my neck and buries her face into my neck.

"I'm so glad you're here. I didn't think you would come."

I set her down and she brushes her hands along the curls on the back of my head. I love how excited she is to see me. It's the best feeling.

"Of course I came. You needed me."

I give her a smile and then look up at Niall who is standing and watching the whole thing. He's got a weird look on his face. I pull Lana to the side and slide my hand into hers.

"Haz, I'm sorry. I was a dick."

"Yeah. You were." Lana squeezes my hand. "Is this going to be a problem? The way you feel about her? Your opinion of us?"

He looks to Lana and back at me. "No. It never was. The only thing I'm worried about is Lana."

"That's one more thing we have in common, then."

He nods his head once and I smile slightly at him. Things are going to be weird, that's for sure, but he's my friend. I take my hand from Lana and hold it out to him. He shakes it and gives me a nod as well before disappearing into the house. I think I believe him...

"That was nice. I think." Lana laughs and takes my hand back in hers.

"It was the best I could do. My best friend is in love with you. That's not exactly something a guy likes to hear."

"He never said he's in love with me," she says nervously. She swings our hands between us and rocks a little on her feet.

"Well, that's what I heard. How are you doing? Are you having fun?"

"Not yet, but now that you're here I think that could change."

Oh boy. "Well, do you want to go inside? Or to the fire?"

"I don't know, what do you want to do?"

"Well we could go out front to my car and make out for a while," I suggest. She laughs and whacks my chest. "What! Just saying. So, option a, b, or c?"

"I think I'll go with b." I groan as she pulls me towards the fire by my hand.

"I would have gone with c, but okay."

"Keep it in your pants Styles," she warns with a grin.

"You're the one who told me to put this to good use," I say, gesturing to my groin. She stops me before we get to the fire and slides her hands up my stomach to my chest.

"And you will. Later." She pulls me in for a quick kiss and heads the rest of the way to one of the logs around the bonfire. There's bunch of cheerleaders and I immediately recognize the blonde one that tried flirting with me once. I sit down on the log and pull Lana onto my lap. There's a group of girls, including the blonde one, standing across the fire. They see us and start whispering to each other. One of them comes and sits beside me. Lana gives me a curious look and I shrug.

"Hey Lana. Harry."

"I'm sorry who are you?" I ask rudely. Lana pulls on my hair discretely in warning.

"I'm Kayla. Trish's friend. We went to high school together." She says it like it's something everyone should know.

"I didn't go to high school here for very long. I didn't make many friends."

"That's sad," she says, laughing a little. What does she want? Who voluntarily third wheels with people they don't know?

"Not really. I met the love of my life."

Lana laughs and hits the back of my head. I smile at her and she gives me a stern but happy look.

"I guess that answers Trish's question," she says, sipping her drink.

"What question is that?" Lana asks, finally joining the conversation.

"She wants to sleep with you. But that's probably not going to happen now."

Lana scoffs and turns to glare at Trish. She gives us a small wave and her friends all laugh. Lana starts to try and get up but I hold her firmly on my lap.

Lana's POV

"Don't," he whispers in my ear. "Just let it go."

"You can leave now," I say quite rudely to Kayla. She rolls her eyes and walks back to her friends. They all giggle and keep looking at me and Harry. They're really fucking annoying.

"Harry, can I go slap her yet?" I ask impatiently. He chuckles and tightens his grip on me. "What a slut! Who does that! Seriously I could rip those fake fucking extensions right off her head."

"Calm down," he laughs. "Trust me, you have nothing to worry about. Your hair is way prettier."

"And it's actually real."

"Alright, why don't we go find El and Lou," he says, lifting me off his lap and standing up. He pulls me with him and pulls me quickly towards the house. I turn and give Trish one last death glare before we're out of sight. She wiggles her fingers at me and someone steps in front of me to block my view. What a bitch. I never liked her. Typical fake blonde slutty cheerleader. When we're inside he tucks me under his arm and whispers into my ear.

"You look incredible by the way."

"Why thank you. Oh, there they are!" El waves excitedly for us to come over.

"Lana, look who is here!" She gestures to a tall boy with blonde hair. He's slender but toned and he looks oddly familiar.

"I'm sorry, I don't..." I look back to El for help and she gestures to him again.

"Brandon! How can you not remember him!"

"Oh my gosh!" I escape from Harry's arm and throw my arms around his neck. He laughs and hugs me back.

"You grew up well," he says, laughing. I pull away and pat his cheek a few times.

"So did you. This is crazy! What are you doing here?"

"Visiting my grandparents. How are you?"

"I'm good, really good. Oh, shit I forgot." I turn around and pull Harry forwards. "This is my boyfriend. Harry." They shake hands but Harry looks quite tense. "Harry this is Brandon. He lived here when we were kids. Me, El, Brandon, Josh, and Louis were inseparable. Then this meanie moved away." Brandon laughs and El links her arm with his.

"Yeah it sucked. Just before high school when everything was about to get fun."

"I bet I missed some good drama," he says, taking a sip of his drink. We all get awkwardly quiet and he looks around at the four of us. "I guess I hit a nerve."

"I'm going to get a drink. Do you want something?" Harry asks me. I nod my head and he kisses my cheek before walking off.

"He seems...dark," Brandon says. I punch his arm and he laughs.

"He's great. He's just a little...protective."

"Really? I couldn't tell. He looked like he was trying to burn me alive with his mind when you hugged me."

"Well, that's dramatic," I joke. "How's your mom?"

"She's good. She'll be so happy to hear that I saw you. She still talks about you sometimes."

"What about me," El whines. He laughs and Louis puts his arm around her shoulder.

"Don't be needy," he says.

Harry's POV

Why do people from the past keep popping up everywhere? This is why I didn't really want to come. I was praying Lana would turn down the invitation to go, to be honest. The only people I care about talking to from high school are the ones that I still talk to. Why can't people just move on?

"Harry!"

I turn around from pouring our drinks to see that little cheerleader from earlier. Not the one who sat with us, the one that wants to sleep with me. Oh fuck.

"Oh, thanks for the drink," she says with a giggle. So irritating.

"Well it wasn't for you, but okay."

"So, finally ditched the girlfriend?"

"I'm sorry, can I help you with something?" I really don't have the patience for this.

"Oh, I'm sure there are a few things you could help me with." She rakes her eyes up and down my body and takes a sip of the drink I apparently just made for her. I roll my eyes and walk away with drinks for myself and Lana. Obviously she follows me. I see Lana and start walking to her, but she pulls my shirt and steps in front of me.

"What do you want?"

"Let me show you."

Before I can reply with a rude comment she grabs my face roughly and pulls it down to her own. She holds my face there and I'm too shocked to react.

Lana's POV

"I wonder where Harry is with those drinks." I turn and almost fall to the floor at the sight in front of me.

Trish sticking her tongue down my boyfriend's throat.

And he's not doing anything to stop her.
