The Replacement

The First Conversation

Jessica paced the apartment as she pulled her blonde locks into a messy bun. Her face filled with annoyance, confusion and hopelessness all at the same time.

Harry sniggered as he watched her, "It is not a very difficult task. I understand that you have a well-paying job, I can offer you twice the amount they are paying you. It is also very demanding, isn't it? Working in the media. If you work with me, it would be a breeze. All you need to do is-"

"I know what a secretary does," Jessica cut him off.

"Yes but you are not just getting a job as a secretary. You are replacing Leah, which means I will buy you clothes to wear to social events, you put them on and accompany me, looking pretty."

"I won't need you to buy me anything. I work in the media, remember? I've been to such events," Jessica stopped as though she figured something out. Her lips curled into a smirk and she walked towards the dining table where Harry was sitting at. "...Oh I get it now. You don't want people to think you have been replaced, do you? You want it to seem like you replaced her."

Harry smiled, "Very clever. Yes, I have a reputation, in case you didn't know. And you are the best in line to replace her."

Jessica ignored how insulted she felt and went on,"Look, I know Leah and my brother shouldn't have done what they did. But why can't you just let me return you the goddamn money and then you find some other girl to replace her which I believe would be very easy for you."

"All I need you to do is to take her place until she learns her lesson," Harry explained. "Once she's done with your pathetic brother and come crawling back into my arms, I'll let you go."

Jessica was furious, she slammed the table and raised her voice,"Who are you to call my brother pathetic? Having you here asking me to save your reputation is pathetic! Just let me give you the money!"

"I don't want your money!" Harry bellowed, standing up and leaned forward towards Jessica. Now their faces were only inches away parted by the dining table, both fuming in anger.

"Then what the hell do you want?!" Jessica spat, blue eyes staring intensely into Harry's deep emerald eyes.

"You," Harry breathed out.

Jessica's face was contorted in confusion. "And why is that?"

"Because unlike other women, you wouldn't want anything more than what I'm offering," Harry breathed out, his voice trembling.

In that moment, Jessica felt sorry for this man. Working as a journalist, she has heard many stories, interviewed many people from all walks of life. And from her 3-year experience, she learnt that everyone has their story, a past that made their future and who they have become. That also have made her into a woman full of empathy, always thinking of others ahead of her and with passion. But is she willing to give up her career for this stranger? All because she love her brother and didn't want this man to ruin his life as how he already intend to if she didn't take his offer. After all, if she did turn down his offer, she was positive that he could use his power to ruin her career too.

"Fine," Jessica mumbled.

Harry's eyes widened in disbelief. He would expect her to give another come back and he was prepared to threaten to ruin her career but have figured it out before he could even say it.

"Very well. You start Monday," Harry smiled.
