Before You Found Me

Harry looked at the number on his screen, grinning. Mystery Girl it is, then, he thought as he entered a name to match digits. Let's see how long it takes me to figure you out.
Lorne walked by and stopped in front of Harry. “Ready for your check?”
“Huh? Uh, yeah. Sure.” He pulled his wallet out and examined his contents. With what was left, he might be lucky to keep moving a month or two more. He had to stop here and pick up some cash. “Hey, uh, are you hiring?”
Lorne looked up from the counter where he was collecting dishes. “You need a job?”
“No, I just like to ask questions,” Harry quipped.
Lorne chuckled,”I'm sure we could find a place for you somewhere. Go talk to Haven,” Lorne gestured with a dirty plate toward the man in the back booth. “He's the owner. He'd know if we need an extra pair of hands.”
Harry stood from the stool,”Thanks, man, I owe you one.”
“Just stay away from my sister and we'll call it even.”
Harry chuckled devilishly, “No promises,” and headed for the back table. The man in the red booth looked as if he were a part of the diner. He wore a white shirt and black leather jacket like he was some kind of greaser, only his jeans were the bright red of the booths, and he wore black high tops. For an older guy, he looked pretty cool. Harry stopped at the edge of the table. “So I hear you might be the man to solve my problems.”
“Depends. What's your problem?”
“I need a job. Any positions open?”
“You got any experience?”
Harry smiled knowing he had this one in the bag. “Used to work at a fish and chips place down the block from my house. Busing, waiting, cooking—whatever you need, I'm your man.”
“That's an interesting accent. What's your story?” Haven questioned, eyes brimming with curiosity.
“A long one.”
“Do you have a place to stay?”
“I'm sleeping at the old motel down the road.”
“Hmm. I see. Well, so long as you work hard and don't try and pull anything, you've got a job here. Go in the kitchen and ask Lorne for an apron. You start immediately.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.” Haven nodded, and Harry headed for the double doors. Lorne was standing at a deep fryer making more batches of french fries. People in America really like their chips, Harry thought. Lorne turned at the sound of footsteps. “I need an apron.”
Lorne tossed Harry a mass of white fabric and smiled. “Welcome to the madness.”

Notes

I told you I'd bring Harry back! I know it kind of feels like filler, but not everything can be action, you know! Sometimes you need to set things up, set the stage for future events. Anyway, if you didn't notice, chapters 3 and 4 (this one and the one before it) basically begin at the same time, just a little after chapter 2 left off. I know not as much time lapsed in this chapter as in chapter three, but I'm exhausted, so I couldn't really think straight and kind of wanted to just get this chapter done. I feel like I'm saying "chapter" a lot. That was off topic. Good golly gracious, I'm tired. Sooo...I should probably just get off here now before I continue to not make much sense and talk in circles and stuff. You should see the way I'm typing right now. It's hilarious. Oh, gosh. Okay, bed time.
