Face Down

About a week after I first met my beautiful daughter Leah, we were able to take her home. She had been weaned off most of the medications she was given in the NICU, but we still had to give her medication for her seizures, which have decreased dramatically since she was born. While we waited for her to come home, we put together this adorable nursery for her in the upstairs guest room, and she could finally sleep in the cute little crib my mother gave us for our makeshift baby shower, since we never got to have an actual one. The walls are covered in this soft and calming pink color, she has a crib that can be turned into a little bed when she gets old enough, and then into a bigger kids bed so we don't have to buy a new one for a while, and a changing table under the window that have white lace curtains on them.
"Its a room fit for a princess," Harry whispered as he kissed our little miracle on top of the head, and with a tiny squeak, she looked up at him and smiled. "Hi baby Leah! Who's a happy girl?" he rubbed his index finger on the bottom of her chin, and made her laugh her melodic sounding laugh. I offered her to him, and he gladly took her, and went to lay her down in her crib, trying to entertain her enough so she wouldn't cry from the loss of contact. Watching him play with her, and hearing her gorgeous little laugh made me think of how perfect this all is, and how at home this all felt. Nothing is out of the ordinary, everything just fits, like the pieces of a puzzle, and nothing is allowed to change.
After a while of trying to coax her into going to sleep, Harry finally walked out of her room, and gave me the "you better not make a sound or I just might have to kill you" look as he silently shut her door. He grabbed my hand and took me into our room across the hall and shut the door. I sat on the bed , but before he did anything else, he checked the video baby monitor to make sure she was asleep, then he joined me on our bed, pulling me into him in a warm and loving embrace that made my heart sing.
"I want one," Harry whispered into my ear.
"Hmmm?" I hummed in response to the comment I only partially heard.
"I want a baby. Aaron now has one, now I want one." he complained.
I sat up in bed and looked at him, and saw how distressed he looked. He actually didn't feel he could be Leah's father, and he wanted to have that feeling.
"Baby, you do have one. Just because she's not your biological daughter, doesn't mean you're not her father. Being a dad isn't just creating a child, its raising and loving the child, and that makes you the perfect father." I said in a soft voice.
"I know that, but..." he trailed off.
"Now, I'm not saying that we can't have another one in the future, one that we make together, I'm just letting you know that no matter who's DNA Leah has, she's always going to see you as her daddy, no matter what." I consoled him. He looked into my eyes, and I could tell they had softened. He leaned his head down and kissed me gently. I could feel the butterflies fluttering in my stomach even after he pulled away and just hugged me. We stayed like that for a long time, until we both fell asleep.
