Four Years Married

I Can't Believe It

We plopped down on the couch just after getting Hazel and Teddy to bed. Tomorrow was her first day of preschool. It taken a little more energy to get them to bed. Both Harry and I sighed with relief because we knew our children were asleep.

"I can't believe Hazel will be going to school tomorrow." He put his head in his hands. I put a hand on his back trying to comfort him.

"Our little Hazel is growing up, but need I remind you of Teddy?" I chuckled as it had almost seemed Harry had forgotten about our second child, Theodore.

"I literally can't believe it though. It seriously feels like we were just taking the train up to my mom's to tell her."

"I know." I too couldn't believe it, but I had to.

"We were just taking her from the hospital like last week."

"We were just taking Teddy home like four months ago." I sighed.

"She was such a good girl, rarely cried at night, and she was so small." He kept gushing. Nothing like Teddy, I thought to myself. Teddy had kept us- me, up most of the first month and half of the second.

"I know." I said instead. "We should go get some sleep too, we've got to be up and you're coming with us to drop her off right?"

"Yep, I kind of want to do like a tradition thing, start a thing for all our kids. Maybe do a breakfast thing, or like a doughnut or muffin, or something."

"Yeah, that would be cute."

"It won't be cute, it will be-" Though he sounded dismayed he trailed off as he looked up the the clock I'd just gotten around to putting up while the three of them were playing one day. He instantly picked up his phone and dialed a number. "I promised my mum I'd call and talk to her tonight." He explained forgetting I was poking fun at his idea of a tradition to start with our off spring.

I went to get ready for a restful slumber while Harry spoke his worries to Anne while she gave him advice. She'd been helping us through it all. Since my parents are out of the picture we turned to his mum for advice when nothing would soothe Hazel, or when Hazel would wake up screaming from a fever. We still called her daily about Theodore, because unlike Hazel, Teddy was a boy and we were used to having our girl. They did mostly the same things, but for some reason Teddy liked to make everything a bit more complicated.

Anne had become the mother I lost when I was young. She always knew when something was up, even if I were just on the phone with her. From early on in my relationship with Harry I felt very close to her, I felt as though I could tell her anything. When I was nervous for a date with her son, that Harry and I saved having sex until we were married. I told her about all my past boy friends; all two of them. I told her about my first kiss and I told her about how much her son meant to me.

Since Hazel; Harry and I had been keeping in better touch with her, to a point where I think she was tired of us. She insisted though that it was nice to be able to show us how to do this parental thing, give us tips and what not since she wasn't able to do that with the rest of Harry's life. She felt useful and important, and she was, unbelievable so.

Ten minutes later as I was pulling up the waist band of the shorts I had chosen to wear ot bed, Harry walked in.

"Let me just brush my teeth." He spoke quietly. I turned the ceiling light off and switched on the beside light, which was dimmer, and more comfortable to keep my eyes open. His shirt was off when he walked in, he threw it in the hamper and then proceeded to rid himself of his pants.

"How is Anne?"

"How many times do we both have to tell you to call her mum?" I gave him a tired smile.

"How is mum?"

"She's good." He got under the blankets with me. He moved close to me, wrapping me in his arms. "She's just about as excited as us about Hazel's first day of school." He chuckled. "She told us not to worry, that everything will be all right. She said it'd be hard to say goodbye for the whole three hours, and that we should treasure it,"

"You did send her our love right?"

"Always." He kissed my temple. I reached to switch off the light. I tugged tight onto his arm, giving it a small kiss before closing my eyes.

"I love you Harry."

"I love you too, sweetheart. Sleep tight."

"You too."

Harry and I had tried our best to make Hazel and Teddy as exhausted as we could in the effort to help them sleep soundly through out the night. Harry read her a story and then fell asleep promptly after the third page. While he read to her, I sat and fed and rocked Teddy to sleep.
Harry and I were feeling the effects of the day hitting us hard. Our eyes shut and we were out just as our daughter was.

The morning came too quickly my alarm went off at a quarter after six, and Hazel didn't have to be to school until eight. I gently pushed Harry awake just as our door opened. Hazel poked her head in when she saw I was awake, she ran to the bed and jumped up on it with us.

"Mummy! We have to get ready!" She sat between Harry and I, her back to him, as she fiddled with my hand. I smiled despite not having any time to adjust to being awake. I felt Harry move under the blanket and in a second he had his arms around Hazel, hugging her good morning. He was leaving quick kisses all over her face and neck as she wrestled with him to stop.

"Stop daddy!" She laughed and squealed. I joined in, poking at her sides and lightly brushing my fingers on the bottoms of her feet. "Stop!" She yelled. "I'm going to wee myself!" She said after a little while longer of laughter. Harry and I ended up laughing just as hard as she was.

"Okay, okay, we'll stop, we'll stop." Somehow my head ended up on Harry's tum and Hazel ended up on mine. I felt Harry lean up. "Aww look at us, one happy family." I looked down at Hazel, her beautiful green eyes looking up at us.

"And what about Ted? Your son?" I asked not amused he seemed to keep forgetting him.

"All right kiddo, we should get up." I moved myself out of the bed and went to Teddy's room to get him up. Hopefully he'd cooperate enough to make it back home after dropping Hazel off at school. Gently I picked him up and held him close as I went to the kitchen.

"Can I have pancakes?" Hazel asked as we watched morning news.

"Daddy and I were thinking about taking you out for some breakfast or some donuts before you have to be in school, do you want to do that?" I asked sipping the coffee from my mug. A smile spread across her lips. Teddy moved in my arms as I talked to Hazel. Rubbing his back he spoke the native language all of us started out with, gibberish.

"Can we do it every morning?"

"No sorry, honey, but daddy was talking about making it like a tradition, so every first day of school daddy and I will take you for that doughnut or breakfast."

"Mummy, what's a tradition again?"

"It's a thing that you do year after year, like going to Nana Anne's for hristmas." Harry came into the kitchen, his hair still wet from his shower. He took Teddy, who was now fully awake while I got a bottle for him before he got too fussy. I warmed it and handed it to Harry. "She's in favor of the tradition idea. I will just take a shower real quick. Harry will you help her get dressed-"

"I don't need help getting dressed muuum." She laughed. Harry and I followed her down the hallway chuckling at her slight attitude.

I showered quick not wanting to miss out on any part of her first day. Getting out I threw on some black skinny jeans and loose tunic top. It's light pink color made my outfit seem more bright. I applied a very little amount of makeup and brushed out my hair, which had started to dry into very loose waves. Putting a bit of frizz cream in my hair and slipping my phone in my pocket, I came out into the TV room to see them sitting on the couch with early morning cartoons blasting the speakers of the TV. Each of them were tucked under Harry's massive arms.

I heard them giggle as I went to the kitchen to make sure the kettle was off. I came back in the room as Harry and Hazel both began giggling like crazy to a stupid joke made about not being able to find something.

"We should go soon or we won't have time to enjoy our breakfast." I stop with a jacket for Hazel at the door while Harry buckled our son into his carriage.

"Mom, I'm in preschool now, I don't need a jacket."

"It's a little chilly this morning, I would really like it if you would put it on, please."

"Hazel listen to your mum." She reluctantly held out her arms so I could help her put it on. I kissed her on the forehead before standing. We all put on our shoes and headed out the door.
I buckled Hazel into her car seat and got into the passenger's seat while He buckled Ted securely to the car seat and then moved to the driver's seat. We buckled and Harry started the car, he was about to put the car in gear, but his hands fell to ten and two on the steering wheel. He looked ahead and then back at Hazel and the finally at me.

"Where are we even going?" I continued smiling and turned to Hazel.

"Would you like to go to that dinner we go to sometimes after church, or that donut shop in the city?"

"If we go to the doughnut shop, can I get a drink like you guys?" She asked innocently enough. Her eyes were big and I think I she was about to put out her bottom lip in a pout.

"Maybe." Harry smiled into the rear view mirror at her as he put the car in gear. I looked at him confused. There was no way in hell I was going to allow my five year old daughter to have a coffee drink.

"Are you excited to go to school?"

"Will Lily be there?" As Hazel talked she played with Teddy and his toys attatched to the seat.

Lily was a year younger then Hazel, and being Zayn's daughter meant they spent a good amount of time with each other.

"Honey, Lily is too young to start school."

"But she's just like me, why can't she be there though?"

"She's too young."

"Why?"

"Her mummy and Uncal Zayn decided to not have a kid until after you were born and stuff."

"Why?" Lately days had been going like this. She would continue to ask why until Harry or I ran out of answers.

"I'm not sure babe. Are you excited for school?" I tried again.

"Are you sure Lily won't be there?"

"I'm sure."

"I think it will be all right." She shrugged. I reached behind me and put a hand on her knee.

"It will be babe, don't be sad about Lily, you'll probably see her soon."

"Yeah, the boys will be at the house when you get home from school tomorrow." Harry looked from the mirror and back to the road.

"See, if Auntie Pez is at work, Lily will be at the house." A smile was slowly growing on her face.

I turned the radio on, it was in the middle of a song. There was a short commercial and then the latest single from One Direction came on. Hazel's eyes lit up, and her smile grew to be massive. She began singing along and playing a drum beat on her legs. Harry hummed along while I watched Hazel. Even Teddy seemed to like that his daddy was playing on the radio.
We listened to the relatively new song. No one knew it was about the happiness Harry, Zayn and soon Louis about having a child. To most it just sounded like a nice day hanging out with someone you loved. Little did the world know it was about children.

Harry drove us through town to get to our favorite coffee shop. I helped Hazel out of the car as Harry unclipped Teddy from the seat. I held Hazel's hand as we crossed the parking lot. Harry held the door for us and several other people leaving with their warm coffees.

"Get her a hot chocolate, a small." I whispered in his ear. "What kind of doughnut would you like?" I asked Hazel.

"Chocolate!" She excitedly told us.

"I'll have a muffin please. And a chocolate milk for Ted." I kissed Harry's cheek and took Hazel and Teddy to a small table in the corner. "I'm going to miss you while you're away learning and stuff." We stared at each other while my hand was slung over the side of Teddy's seat playing with my fingers.

"Mommy, I have to go to school."

"I know, it's just you're so young and I just can't believe you're this old." I felt like crying, I really did, cheesy as it sounds. Harry having a tough time last night believing she was this old was difficult enough, and now it was just hitting me. And like I told Harry, we still had Teddy who was just a few months old.

"I come barring gifts." Harry smiled as he approached us. Hazel's eyes lit up again when Harry set down a smaller version of the same cup Harry and I always had in our hands. Then he placed her doughnut in front of her, but she didn't seem to care about it.

"Be careful sweetie, your drink is probably very hot. Harry can you get her some ice cubes to try to cool it down a little?" Harry left the table again. I broke my muffin up and offered a small part of it to Teddy. He took it, probably not knowing what it was. He moved it around in his mouth before he stuck his tongue out in disgust. I took a napkin to wipe away the crumbs and chewed up muffin away from his face.

Harry ducked his face to kiss Teddy when he came back. He set a glass of ice down near Hazel so she could reach it and then sat. As I was chewing a bite of muffin Hazel plopped an ice cube into her drink causing it still spill over the edge of the cup a smidgen.

"Careful babe." Harry reached over the table to mop up the slight spill with a napkin. The sudden movement scared Teddy causing him to start crying. I picked him up into my arms looking down at him lovingly.

"Shhhshshshhh." I bounced him up down in my arms. Hazel looked at her drink while the ice melted. Teddy cried harder for a second but then calmed down when I wiped his tears away. When he stopped crying I took a drink of my caramel mocha and another bite of the muffin. "How do you like your drink?" Harry was pouring some of the chocolate milk into Teddy's bottle.
"It's good. And is this what you guys drink?" She asked her mouth full of doughnut.

"Actually, no. We got you one without caffeine. What you've got is hot chocolate. Sorry sweetie." Teddy sucked down the milk as we talked.

"Isn't that the stuff daddy makes after it snows and we were out playing?"

"It is, but this is gourmet, they melt actual chocolate and mix it with milk, not just those packets."

"It's good, but I think I like daddy's better." She finished her doughnut. "Can I have the rest of Teddy's milk?" She asked already reaching for it. Harry's smiled grew, he was proud that his daughter had like his hot chocolate better, even if it was just a packet of cocoa. She took a drink of his milk. "Is it time for school yet?" She asked. In the moment we had all sat calmly at the table I'd forgotten today was one of the biggest days of her life, she was starting school. I quickly looked at the clock on my phone.

"Yes, dear we should probably head to the school now."

Harry shoved the rest of my muffin into his mouth and waited for me to put Teddy back in his carriage so he could take him to the car.

"Do you want the rest of this?" I asked Hazel before gathering up the rest of the wrappers to throw them out. She shook her head and followed me close. I picked her up and carried her to the car. She rested her head in the crook of my neck.

"Nervous?" I felt her head move up and down. "You'll be great. You've already started reading your books with daddy and I and you already talk so well sweetie." I kissed the top of her head as she buckled herself into her car seat.
