Royal Pain

Maid Mischief

I was led up a cobblestone pathway that led to an entrance inside Buckingham Palace. My heart rate was picking up speed and I was to the point that I didn’t want this man in uniform holding onto me anymore.

“Uh,” I said, yanking my arm from his firm grasp. The expression on his face looked surprised. “I’m not sure I want to go anymore.”

“You have to. The prince demanded that you be brought back.” The man tried to grab me again, stepping forward, but I moved out of the way just in time.

“But I don’t want to go.”

The man adjusted his fuzzy hat and huffed. “You don’t have a choice. Now, we can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.”

I bit my nail, nervous as to what to do. Then, my feet seemed to have a mind of their own. I whipped around and took off in the opposite direction. The man behind me shuffled to keep up. I could hear the pounding of our shoes against the hard stones.

“Get back here!” The guard yelled.

I tried to run faster, stretching my legs to great lengths. My breathing was labored, coming quickly in deep gasps. I was completely out of shape. Just as I made it back to the gate, more guards dressed in the same uniform came out of nowhere, causing me to stop in my tracks.

I was grabbed from behind and a rag was placed over my mouth. The smell was nauseating but I had not choice but to breath. I screamed, but my sounds were muffled by the white fabric.

“Screaming isn’t going to help, miss.”

Those were the last words I heard before my world faded to black.

My eyes fluttered open and I groaned. A pounding headache was threatening to bust my head open at any second. My throat was dry so I tried to swallow, but it was futile.

Hesitantly, I rose in the bed I was in. Compared to the one at my new house, this one was huge. It was extremely comfortable with Egyptian cotton sheets and a silky duvet. I looked to my left to see a bedside table with a glass of water sitting on it. I grabbed it quickly, gulping every last drop of the liquid down.

The room I was in was bigger than our house. It had marble flooring with deep blue wallpaper, making me think of the ocean.

Am I in Buckingham Palace? That was the only question running through my head. The last thing I remembered was that guard practically kidnapping me.

My thoughts were soon interrupted by a miniscule knock at the tall, wooden door. It opened, revealing a dainty woman dressed in a maid uniform. She was short and her face was cherubic. Her shiny black hair was pinned into a round bun, a white bonnet holding it up.

“Hello, dear,” she greeted me sweetly. “Did you sleep well?”

Did she really just ask how I slept? I was knocked out for goodness sake! “Fine,” I said, appeasing her question.

She smiled and rushed to my bedside. “That’s wonderful. My name is Winnie and I’ll be helping you get ready. The prince is ready to meet you now.”

I was pulled out of bed and to a door on the other side of the room. We passed a vanity mirror, giving me time to examine my looks. My hair was tangled, sticking up in the craziest of places. I looked awful.

“Don’t worry, dear,” Winnie said. “We’ll get you fixed up in no time.” She must’ve seen my horrified expression.

She opened the door and my jaw dropped from what I was seeing. Before me lay the biggest, most extravagant walk-in closet I had ever laid eyes on. Several dresses and ball gowns hung inside, along with some casual clothes too.

Winnie stepped forward and rifled through the clothes, pulling out a red dress. It looked short and had a one shoulder strap, the other left bare. The fabric was lacy and wrapped diagonally around it to give it a slimming look.

“Here, put this on. The prince will approve.”

She shoved the dress into my hands and ambled to the vanity mirror, pulling out some make-up tools. I took that as my chance to strip down and pull the dress on over my head. It was tighter than what I had guessed, coming just about mid thigh around my legs. This dress was definitely expensive and something I never would’ve been able to afford.

“You look ravishing,” Winnie beamed, touching her cheek gingerly. She pulled me to the vanity mirror and began to apply some make-up.

Blush was brushed across my cheeks, my eyelids were smeared with a light eye shadow, and my lips were painted with a bright red lipstick.

“Done,” Winnie intoned. “The prince will be impressed.”

I gulped. “About that. Why does he want me?” I tried to make my question sound nonchalant. Who knows, maybe she would answer me.

“I think it will be best if the prince tells you,” Winnie said, patting the top of my hand lightly.

So much for hoping. Winnie led me down a narrow hallway, past other maids and guards who were bustling to get to their destinations. The anxiety was building up inside me and I was beginning to worry.

How old was this prince? What did he look like? What was his name?

“Are you excited?” Winnie asked as we neared the end of the hallway. There was a door embellished with gold trim and painted red.

I didn’t know how to answer her question. So I just stayed silent.

“There’s no need to be nervous. The prince already knows everything about you.”

What? I screamed in my mind. He knows everything about me? How can that be?

Once we reached the door, Winnie knocked lightly. My heart galloped in my chest. I wanted to yank my hand out of hers, but I couldn’t. I was frozen on the spot.

“Come in,” a deep voice boomed, making me jump.

This is it. The prince is right behind this door.

“Are you ready?” Winnie asked, beaming up at me.

I looked at her with wide eyes. She just kept smiling and pushed the door open. “Miss Ellie is finally ready to meet you, Prince Harry.”

How does she know my name? Everything seemed so unusual. How did they know so much about me already? How long had I been passed out?

“Wonderful,” I heard the prince say, but I couldn’t see his face. “Bring her in.”

My legs felt wobbly underneath me. There was nothing I could do or say to stop this. I was going to meet the prince whether I wanted to or not.
