Memories
Prologue
The sun was high in the shining blue sky as kids poured out of the elementary school. Two fifth graders hung back, hugging every teacher. When they finally exited the school, the boy exclaimed, "School's over! Yeah!"
"Niall!" the girl complained, not quite as enthusiastic as the boy. "Slow down!"
"Come on, Lyn!" Niall grinned, but slowing down. He waited for her to be at his side, and when she was, he sped forward once again, pumping his fist into the air. "You do have to get ready for Danny's party. I know how long girls take."
"Shut up!" laughed Evelyn, playfully shoving Niall. When they reached their houses Evelyn called, "And don't forget to come and get me when you're ready. You know how I don't look at the clock."

Niall strolled over to Evelyn's house which was right next to his. As he was about to ring the doorbell, the door flew open. Evelyn looked so pretty, with her blond wavey hair and her purple party dress. Niall stifled a gasp and in a gentlemanly manner he held his arm out to the lady.
"Finally you learned some manners!" Evelyn giggled, slipping her arm through his.
'No,' Niall thought, 'I just learner to treat princesses the way they're supposed to be treated.' Together they walked to Danny's house where the music already started. It seemed like Danny invited the whole fifth grade to his big house. Maybe he did.
As Niall and Evelyn pushed past dancing bodies, they strode to the food tables. "The best part of the end of school party!" They said together, and high-fived. They started eating cake and laughed at how the other person looked so silly with frosting over their faces.
And when the slow songs started, Niall and Evelyn started wiping off the sugary deliciousness. But Niall was pulled away by Danny.
"This is the slow song! Ask her to dance with you!" Danny said excitedly, nearly jumping up and down.
"B-but I don't like Evelyn that way..." Niall trailed off, knowing he was lying.
"Yeah, right," Danny scoffed. "Here, watch this." He went up to the most popular girl in the grade, Abigail. "May I have this dance?" he asked, holding out his hand. Abigail giggled and placed her hand in his, and they started waltzing to the middle of the dance floor, Danny wiggling his eyebrows to Niall.
Niall made his way back to Evelyn, who sighed in relief. "Didn't know where you were," she said, concern still written on her face. Niall cleared his throat and stuttered, "Um...m-may I have this--" He was interrupted when Evelyn smiled and took his hand in hers. "Sure," she beamed, her smile seeming to light up the whole room.
They didn't dance since they didn't know how to. They just swayed to the music, holding onto each other like their life depended on it. And it seemed like they were the only ones in the room, until a girl rudely tapped Niall on the shoulder and said, "I'm cutting in," so Evelyn had no choice but to let go of Niall. And as the music got faster and louder she shouted to Niall, "I'll go get some punch!" And then she was swept away into the crowd.
After Niall finally got the girl off of him, he searched for Evelyn but couldn't find her anywhere. He got more and more panicky, and as beads of sweat dripped down his neck, he screamed for Evelyn but the music was too loud. He went to Danny and told him to turn off the music, and then everyone was sent home. But Evelyn still wasn't found. And as Niall cried on his doorstep, there were comforting hands on his back, but none of them were Evelyn's, so he couldn't be comforted. And at night as he stared at the bright stars, he whispered to himself, "I'll find you, Evelyn. One day, I'll find you."
