Chapter Nine

“Hey, you’re home!” Brooke called out as I arrived home late Saturday evening. “I thought you’d be staying at James’s house tonight?”

“He had to go out somewhere.” I replied as I put my coat and bag down on the kitchen table.

“So… what are we doing tonight?” Brooke asked.

“Not sur- oh crap.” I said suddenly. “I accidentally took James’s phone. I must have left mine there.” I explained to Brooke.

“Do you want to go out for dinner somewhere and on the way we can stop and grab it?” She asked which I replied with a quick ‘yes’.

-

Knock, Knock, Knock

“One of them should be home…” I told Brooke as no-one answered the front door.

Knock, Knock, Knock

I could hear quick footsteps coming up the hallway and I hoped it was James. I really didn’t want an awkward encounter with Harry. The footsteps stopped in front of the big, heavy front door before hastily unlocking it and opening it slowly. “Oh, hello?” I said, confused, as I came face to face with Lucy, James’s ex girl-friend. A look of disgust consumed her face when she realized it was me. I felt Brooke go rigid with hate beside me.

“What do you want?” She asked me, clearly annoyed about my presence.

“Is James around?” I asked. “I accidentally took his phone…” I waved his phone around.

“James!” She called out loudly. I heard another lot of loud footsteps sound as they came from the bedroom and down the hallway.

“Grace?” James said as he realized I was at the front door, causing him to immediately speed up his walking pace. “What are you doing here?”

“Giving you your phone, which I accidentally took, and picking up mine.” My voice was as flat. What is Lucy doing here?

“Ok…” He replied, looking back and forwards between Lucy and me.

“Actually, just bring my phone on Monday… I have to go.” I said, making an excuse to leave.

“Alright… Look, Grace-” He replied, taking a step towards me.

“You have fun tonight, James.” I interrupted him. I grabbed Brooke’s hand suddenly, and pulled her away as I walked down the path and away from my boyfriend’s house.

“I swear, I will kill her.” Brooke threatened. “If she thinks she can waltz in and break you guys up-” Brooke was suddenly cut off by a masculine voice yelling out my name. The same loud footsteps which belonged to James were now echoing down the street as he ran towards us.

“Grace…” He cried as he pulled my arm around so I was now facing him.

“What.” I snapped at him. “Are you going to explain why your ex-girlfriend was at your house with you when you told me you were going out? Also, if you’re explaining that, why don’t you clarify why you both came out of the bedroom?”

“It was an accident…” He began. I could feel emotions almost being thrown at me. Tears began falling out of my cloudy, grey eyes. “I didn’t mean for it to happen, I swear.” I pushed him away roughly as I felt him take a step closer to me.

“Don’t you dare come anywhere near me ever again.” I told him calmly before I burst into tears. “You made me fall for you…” Brooke was staying pretty silent beside me; I had actually forgotten she was there for a few seconds.

“But-” James said as he tried to come closer to me.

“Get away from me!” I screamed suddenly, pushing him away. I tried to wipe away the tears that were falling down my face. “I never want to see you again.” I turned my back on him and ran quickly down the street until I could no longer see him standing helplessly with Brooke.

-

“Morning Grace.” Brooke smiled as I wandered into the kitchen early the next morning. “I made you’re favourite, vegetarian bacon and eggs!” She placed the plate of food down on the dining table which had already been set.

“Are you doing this just because of last night?” I asked depressingly. I had almost cried myself to sleep last-night, not just because James had cheated on me with his ex-girlfriend, but because I knew I was going to be alone forever.

“Um, look, Grace. We need to talk.” Brooke told me. I sat down beside her, confused at her tone of voice and her choice of words. “Before I say anything, I just want you to know I love you so, very much. You are my best-friend and I would never do anything to hurt you.”

“Ok?” I replied. Brooke began talking hesitantly.

“When you, James, Harry and I were at that club, something sort of happened.” She looked at the floor. When I didn’t answer she continued talking. “James and I were just talking and we were drunk and I swear it meant nothing.” She cried, blurting out excuses. “I’m so sorry!” Tears began pouring out of her eyes. I still didn’t reply. I was so angry at her, I had been freaking out before that Brooke had noticed Harry and I looking at each other in the club, which her and James were having sex behind our backs. “It was only once, I swear, in the bathroom towards the end of the night.” She admitted. “Grace… Please say something.” She begged. I stood up suddenly, no emotion present of my face.

“I have to go.” I muttered. All I could think as I made my way to the front door was: thank-god I got dressed before breakfast.

“Grace, wait!” Brooke called out as I left the apartment without another word. She didn’t follow me; she didn’t try to make it all better and ask for my forgiveness.

Outside of the apartment block it was raining. I ran, my feet squelching against the hard concrete ground. People stared and watched as I ran. My hair flew over my shoulders and out behind me as my speed grew faster and faster. I was soaked but I didn’t care. Out of breath, I arrived at James and Harry’s house.

Knock, knock, knock

I waited impatiently for the door to open, trying to comb my fingers through my saturated hair.
“Grace?” James stated as he came to the door. Harry was standing behind him, watching me as I interacted with his best-friend. “I’m so glad you came back.” He cried.

“I’m sorry James.” I told him before pushing past him to come face-to-face with Harry. I rushed up to him, my lips making immediate contact with his. My damp arms wrapped around his neck while his arms pulled me in tightly across the waist. We kissed passionately, not caring that James was standing behind us, watching our every move. I jumped up, wrapping my legs around Harry’s waist while Harry used his hands to support my lower back.

“Don’t leave me.” Harry whispered into my ear.

“Never.” I replied, whispering back.
