The Maroon Tavern

Sweet Home Made Spaghetti

As Sherrie made her way back to her apartment, the winds through the streets were blowing tremendously. Keeping her head down, she took steady fast steps. As she kept walking she didn’t notice a flyer that was on the floor which she had stepped on. The flyer stuck to the bottom of her boots as she marched her way back to her apartment.
A few minutes later she was back in the building. Gippy was sitting in his usual counter spot reading his newspaper. “Dinner at 6 Sherrie.” He said without looking up.
“I’ll be there!” Sherrie smiled as she walked up the stairs and into her apartment.
She set her stuff aside, taking off her boots without looking at them and changed into a sports bra and an old pair of spandex that she was able to find at the second hand store. Gippy lent her his CD player along with a few CD’s. Sherrie decided on an upbeat tempo beat and started warming up. In no less than ten minutes she was doing drills, flips, and splits all over the place. Ballet trained her for any other style of dancing. Sure she could never afford all of the tutus and classical swan Lake CD’s but all she needed was some tape to wrap around her feet and she was good. She’s saving up for a new pair of dance shoes that the second hand store around the corner held.
After an hour and a half Sherrie was out of breathe and sweating all over the place. She took a towel she’d set up by her water and wiped her face as she unwrapped her toe tapes. She then got up and turned off the music, took a shower and changed into a huge yellow t shirt made for a man three times her size that went right down to her knees and some tights. Looking then at the clock it was 5:58 pm. Perfect.
Sherrie makes her way down to Gippy’s floor where Gippy and his Paula were setting up the table. They both looked up when Sherrie came in. “Annnnd youre just on time!” Gippy announced. Sherrie blushed. “Her Paula I’ll get that.” Sherrie insisted as she laid out the plates. “Thank you sweat pea.” Paula smiled. She was a plump woman possibly an inch taller than Gippy she moved to England from Italy in her late teens, Sherrie never bothered asking her about it for it seemed every time that topic came up Paula seemed uncomfortable. Other than that they were perfect for one another. Sherrie wondered why they weren’t married.
As they all sat down Paula had made her famous homemade spaghetti. Sherrie was drooling when she saw it, remembering she’d barely eaten anything all day. Paula knowing Sherrie’s big appetite wasn’t shy giving her a huge amount.
“Thank you Paula this is delicious as always.” Gippy said to his sweet heart.
Paula smiled and gave him a smooch. Sherrie smiled at them.
“Yes thank you Paula!” Sherrie added. She was so hungry she’d almost finished her plate.
“So Sherrie how was work?” Paula asked.
“It was pretty interesting, especially watching Stan scare off his customers.”
Gippy laughed. “As long as that boy doesn’t try anything on me I’m fine with him.”
“Oh Gibford, the boy would probably be more frightened of you than that.” Paula nagged.
“Ms. Paula I’ll be taking only a half day tomorrow from work so if there’s anything you need help with at your store just let me know.” Sherrie added.
“Now Sherrie, I love you darling. And I would love to have you work at my store, but we both know you’re meant for so much more than this life! You should audition for that performing arts academy down town!” Paula urged.
“I don’t know…” Sherrie said insecurely.
“Sherrie you’re so talented! You dance because it’s who you are! After all you’ve been through you never stopped! Just think about it.”
“Schools like that isn’t for people like me Paula. Plus school semester just began. I wouldn’t be able to get in until next year, if I tried.”
“Well honey until then find something out there that makes you happy, something that you can put all your heart and talent into. My store and that bakery you work at better be temporary.”
Sherrie signed. “Okay, I’ll walk around town and see what I can find tomorrow.”
Paula smiled and winked. “That a girl.”
