The Maroon Tavern

A Sconey Friendship

The Sun shot through the windows of Sherrie’s apartment that Sunday morning. Sherrie opened her eyes to the view of a subtle home that she had made herself. Sure she didn’t have a bed yet, but her apartment was almost complete, for her at least. Gippy had managed to give her some blankets and collect pillows from local charity stores as well as some second hand clothes that they were able to get since Gippy’s longtime girlfriend Paula owned a second hand store.
As Sherrie sat up from her couch she smiled to herself. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have come across an angel like Gippy who literally became a father figure to her. Sherrie always helped Gippy Clean the kitchen after dinner and even got a job as a waitress in this popular bakery in London. Though she did have to walk two miles every morning there and back she didn’t mind. She was grateful for everything she was given. But something inside her still seemed empty. Sherrie wanted her life of music and joy back.
When Sherrie was younger her grandmother enrolled her in ballet school and singing classes knowing that Sherrie lived for it. It wasn’t until Sherrie was nine when her Beloved Nana died and she was forced into the foster care system.
Sherrie always wondered about whom her parents were but Nana refused to tell her until she was old enough. All that she would tell Sherrie was that her father was English and her mother was American. But asking more was just a plea for a slap in the face. Nevertheless Sherrie was obedient, remembering how her nana would smell of lavender and coconut milk made Sherrie smile automatically.
As Sherrie sat there she realized she was almost late. She’d have to skip breakfast in order to make it to work! Quickly jumping out off her couch she slipped on her bra, a white shirt and a loose old skirt that went just upon her knees. Quickly brushing her teeth and putting some deodorant on, she took one last look at herself in the mirror. She couldn’t afford makeup but her hair needed to be brushed. She quickly took an old brush and raved through her long wavy brown hair, grabbed her purple scarf and olive green cardigan that was larger than life on her, and sprinted out the door.
When she ran passed Gippy reading his morning news article in the lobby he called out. “Morning Sunshine..”
“Morning Gippy Sorry but I’m late I’ll be back for supper!”
Gippy laughed, “Good luck getting there Speedy!”
Out the door Sherrie jogged to her bakery and made it just on time. Stan, a recent friend she had just made was waiting at the register for her.
“Well hello there my little peas blossom.” He said cheerfully, the customer who had just bought a muffin glanced at Stan in a horrified expression obviously oblivious to the fact that Stan was gay before he bought the muffin.
Stan catching his glance glares at the man, “Anything else Senor?”.
Sherrie giggled as she made her way to the kitchen, swiping her card and putting on her apron, when she came out Stan turns towards her.
“God straight men are so annoying.” He said rolling his eyes. Sherrie just smiled.
“Don’t worry Stan you are loved.” She gave him a sincere face. Stan gushed.
“Daw you’re too sweet ginger, but Greg wants me to start mixing the batter like right now so im gonna need you to cover this until I’m done.”
“Sure okay!”
Stan strutted into the kitchen. Sherrie just rolled her eyes and fixated herself to the register. The bakery was rather small but had the best scones in the city. Customers would be barging in around 8 am to 4 pm which was great since dinner starts at 6 back at home. Checking the clock right then it was 7:45 am. Sherrie inhaled deeply at the counter. She would get off around 4 so that meant she had 2 hours back at home to dance. Sherrie never stopped with ballet even though she couldn’t afford it anymore. Since she built her own bar and mirrors were available in her apartment she basically had her own training room. As she thought about the day further along, someone enters the bakery.
A girl probably the same age as Sherrie entered the bakery; she had hot red hair, big green and blue eyes, and pale skin. Sherrie was intrigued by her wardrobe; thin strapped floral dress and furry pumps. The girl walked elegantly to the register.
Sherrie doing her job says, “Welcome to Sky Bakery! What can I get you?”
The girl smiled shyly, “Umm oh yes! I’d like a blueberry scone with an espresso please?”
“Coming right up!”
Sherrie but on her gloves, reached in the bakery’s drawer for a scone, and told Stan to make an espresso. The girl waited patiently as Sherrie handed her both her orders and paid politely.
“Thank you.” The girl said as Sherrie collected the money. “I hope you don’t mind me asking but you’re an American right?”
“The one and only.” Sherrie replied with a smile. British girls always had those types of questions.
“I’m Lucy by the way, I’ve never met an American before so this is actually really exciting for me!”
Sherrie smiled with a nod, quiet terrified at the moment as well. “Sherrie, Sherrie Lewis.” She stuck out her hand. Lucy shook it eagerly.
“Well it’s nice to meet you Sherrie! Hope to see you soon again!” Sherrie smiled and waved back as Lucy left the bakery. The girl was oddly hyper but it was refreshing to meet a new person who was actually willing to talk to her.
The rest of the day was filled with the usual boring customers who didn’t bother a second conversation like Lucy did. Hours passed after and when Sherrie almost fell asleep at the counter she felt a smack on her ass. Turning around instictly it was stan. “Wake up sunshine a new customer just came in…Holy shit! Holy Shit!”
“Stan calm down what is it?” Sherrie asked as Stan was fan girling like a mad cow.
“That’s Louis and Niall from One Direction!” He whispered urgently.
“That boy band you made me listen to?” Sherrie asked. She’d only heard of these boys vaguely from Stan’s constant obsession over them, though she hardly knew which boy was which.
“Okay which on is which?” Sherrie asked.
“Blond one is Niall the other is Louis. Take this one I think I’m about to pass out.”
Sherrie just giggled as she helped Stan get into the kitchen. When she ran back out the two fine young gentlemen were already at the register. Niall apparently gaping at all the treats.
“Welcome, what can I get you boys.” Sherrie started.
“Ah you’re American! We just got done with America!” Louis spoke excitingly.
“Beautiful country.” Louis added.
“Why thank you.” Sherrie answered with a smile.
“Too bad we couldn’t drink. I almost died there!” Niall complained. Louis slapped the back of his head.
“Sorry. Nail gets grumpy when he’s hungry.” Louis apologized.
Nail turned to Sherrie and froze, “Sorry miss!” apparently flabbergasted with Sherrie’s beauty, to both him and Louis Sherrie had one of those natural beauties that you automatically fall for. Too bad Louis was taken but Niall snapped out of it quickly.
“It’s okay boys really. What can I get you two?”
“Well it’s our first time here, what do you suggest?” Louis asked.
“We do have the best scones in the city. Why not try one of those, they come in different flavors.” Sherrie suggested.
“Aright ill have one raspberry scone.” Louis ordered.
“I’ll have a blueberry, cinnamon, raisin, and raspberry scone please!” Nialll called out excitingly.
Sherrie just chuckled.
“Alright let me go make sure my buddy Stan isn’t passed out in the back. Just wait a minute please.” Sherrie called out as she made her way to the kitchen. The boys peaked over as she walked away.
Niall’s stomach grumbled. “Oh my god Louis I’m dying!”
“You idiot, you’re just hungry for god’s sake.” Louis replied.
Sherrie came back a minute later with their orders and the boys paid.
“Would you mind sitting with us?” Louis asked.
Sherrie gave them a confused look, looking around her seeing that no one else is in the bakery she shrugged and nodded.
As the three of them took their seats Nail dug into his scones immediately. Sherrie just chuckled.
“So what’s your name sweetheart?” Louis asked.
“Sherrie…” She answered.
“Well Sherrie I’m Louis and this is my band mate Niall, he’s a bit of a maniac when it comes to food.” Louis chuckled as Niall nodded.
“Well it’s nice to meet the two of you. And I’m sorry about Stan back there he was fangirling like crazy when you two walked in.” Sherrie spoke.
“It’s okay we’re kind of used to that, lucky, your one of the first people who hasn’t jumped on either one of us.” Louis spoke honestly. He was grateful for Sherrie not acting like a maniac when so many other girls would have probably passed out from the sight of him and Niall. The rest of the afternoon passed quickly as the three of them talked on and on about the world and food which Niall eagerly spoke about.
Sherrie looked at the clock. It was 4 pm. “Well boys it was really nice meeting you but I have to go.”
Louis and Niall both waved goodbye as they remained seated at their table. Sherrie went back to take off her uniform and slipped on her old green cardigan and purple scarf, then made her way out of the bakery. Louis seeing her leave noticed how little she was wearing on a cold winter day.
“Niall Sherrie must be freezing!” Louis spoke quickly. Nail noticed too and they both ran out of the bakery but to no avail Sherrie was gone.
