If I Lay Here

Chapter 35

Ally’s POV

“Harry where are we going?” I asked for the hundredth time tonight as I fiddled with the end of my dress. After wandering around Hyde Park for the day Harry told me to get ready because we were going out tonight. He wouldn’t tell me what we were doing and obviously not where we are going. All he said was for me to wear something nice.

“Hush child.” Harry teased, resting a hand on my knee, “We will be there soon enough.”

“Okay…are the rest of the boys going?” I wondered, hoping he would give me little hints. I watched Harry’s lips curve into a smile as he kept his eyes focused on the road ahead.

“Nope, but it’s not just us either.” He replied while flicking the left blinker on.

“Harry please don’t tell me this is a surprise trip to meet your parents! You told me that is in a couple of days!”

“Don’t worry babe, I wouldn’t do that to you.” He assured me while rubbing little circles onto my knee cap.

“Have I met whoever it is we’re going to see?” I asked, beginning to play with Harry’s fingertips. I twirled the ring on his middle finger around, waiting for a response.

“One out of the three.” Harry answered. Suddenly, the car came to a stop in front of a quaint little restaurant with dimly lit lights hanging on the outside and dark wood panels decorating the exterior. Through the windows I could see a variety of people; form elderly couples having dinner, to younger couples on dates, to families spending time together. Harry’s palm drifted from mine for merely moments as he came around to my side of the car, but returned just as quickly. Hand in hand, we walked toward the restaurant. For once there were no paps around, just people casually roaming. No one paid particular attention to us and I could tell Harry was enjoying that. His hand gave mine a light squeeze and he pulled me gently to his side while we thanked the man at the door.

“Hello, may I help you?” The host asked.

“Erm yes, I have a reservation for Styles.” Harry told him politely, flashing a smile at the dark haired man. He looked down at his binder, scanning through names, before tapping the end of his pen on the sheet.

“Ah yes! Okay, right this way.” He said. Harry placed his right hand on the small of my back while his left hand was in mine. I pulled him along, behind the man until he stopped in front of a table occupied by three other people. Instantly, I recognized the one of three Harry said I would.

“Ally!” Lou cheered, standing up from the table to wrap me in a tight hug. “’ow are you love? I ‘aven’t seen you in quite a while!”

“I’m good…great actually!” I corrected, looking up at Harry who was reaching over with the hand that was on my back to shake the hand of the man Lou was with. I noticed an array of tattoos peeking out from underneath his navy blue button down shirt. Vaguely, I remember Harry mentioning some of his tattoos were done by Lou’s husband…Tom.

“Fantastic!” Lou replied, before leaning across the table to swat her husband on the arm. “Tom, this is the one he’s always on about!” She told him while pointing in my direction. Tom averted his conversation away from Harry to focus on me. “Tom this is Harry’s girlfriend, god I love saying that, Ally! Ally, this is my husband, Tom.”

“Pleasure to meet you.” He said as he extended a hand my way. Just then I noticed something tugging on the corner of Lou’s over-sized jumper. Harry noticed too because his face lit up like the actual sun. Lou turned around to reveal a little girl no older than two with the most amazing blond pig tails I’ve ever seen.

“Look who’s ‘ere Lux! Uncle Harry!” Lou spoke, bending down to retrieve the excited girl from the booth. Uncle Harry. I swear my heart instantly melted. Harry had sent me several pictures of him and Lux waving at the camera while they were on tour. I could tell how much she meant to him, but now I could really see it. Lux practically leapt from her mother’s arms into Harry’s awaiting ones, giggling and cheering.

“Hi princess!” Harry cooed, brushing his nose against hers. Lux’s little hands firmly grasped the sides of Harry’s face as she laughed. He proceeded to stick his tongue out and make silly faces at the entranced little girl, putting a smile on my face.

“Right, now, ‘utch up!” Lou said, clapping her hands together. “I’m getting ‘ungry.” She and Tom slid in to one side of the sleek, wooden booths while Harry, Lux, and I squeezed into the other. Harry was content with having Lux seated on his lap while we waited for our meal to arrive. Still, his free hand managed to find its way to mine on the table top. Lux immediately noticed the gesture. Her little hand reached toward ours, catching Harry’s undivided attention.

“What are you doing Lux?” Tom asked as she struggled to move closer to our entwined hands.

“That’s my Ally, Lux.” Harry whispered gently in her ear. His eyes remained focused on her outstretching hand while he spoke. Lux stopped reaching at Harry’s words. Instead she turned to me.

“Hi sweetheart.” I said softly, offering her a smile. I lightly tickled her side earning a jumble of jibberish to fall from her lips along with giggles.

“Lux, darling, let Uncle Harry and Auntie Ally ‘ave some space.” Lou advised, stretching to collect her daughter from Harry. My cheeks flushed red from her statement. She was already considering me an aunt to her child. I couldn’t be happier. It felt so nice to be accepted by all of the people Harry held so close. He seemed to like the title too, because he instantly bent down to place a loving kiss to my temple. I could feel his smile through the kiss, causing Lou to coo from the other side of the table. “Absolutely precious you two!”

“Thanks Lou.” Harry answered, rubbing his thumb up the top of my hand.

“Harry, I was talking to my pal the other day.” Tom said, changing the topic and, for that, I am grateful. “He showed me some new sketches he has for tattoos. They’re sick mate!”

“Really?” Harry wondered, “I was thinking about getting something…maybe on my ankles, I’m not sure.”

“You should. I’m telling you, some of these designs are mental! We could set it up some time while you’re still here.” Tom suggested. Lou playfully swatted him on the arm before speaking.

“Oi, I’m not spending all bloody night talking about tattoos.” She laughed, “Now Ally, ‘as Harry talked to you about the MTV awards in September. I believe they are in Los Angeles.”

“Um, sort of,” I responded, recalling the day Louis and Zayn called us to listen to our segment on some gossip channel. “I think I remember something about a ‘Hally’ debut.” The four of us chuckled at the silly name for Harry and I.

“Bloody entertainment junkers.” Lou scoffed under her breath. “Did you not mention it Harry?”

“I didn’t get the chance to!” He defended, tightening his grip on my hand in the slightest.

“Well, I was ‘aving a right chat with Paul last night and he mentioned something about three awards and a performance. I guess Danielle and Eleanor are attending too. He’s working so we get seats together.” She explained.

“We won’t be able to sit together though, right?” Harry speculated as he gestured between the two of us. Lou glanced down at our hands briefly before looking back up.

“Probably not. You probably can’t even walk the carpet together. I don’t know why everyone is expecting this as your big debut in front of the press when you won’t even be able to be with one another.” She huffed. The conversation was dropped momentarily while the waitress brought us the meals we had ordered. Tom and Lou were going on telling me different tour stories; some made to embarrass Harry and some just to fill me in on the strange things that went on. I found it extremely easy to talk to Lou. She was very relatable, easy going, not to mention a bit of a change from the constant male attention I’ve been getting living with the boys. As we were talking, Harry leaned over, stealing a french fry off my plate that I had been picking on while we ate dessert. I looked over at him only to be poked by the fry on the nose.

“Hey!” I whined, wiping my nose off with Harry’s napkin. His lips curved into one of his charming smiles; the kind that emphasized his prominent dimples. Harry pushed his fork into the little chocolate cake he ordered and scooped up some vanilla ice cream along with it.

“Here, try this.” He told me, offering his fork my way. I went to go grab it, but Harry pulled it back towards him.

“Harry, you don’t have to feed it to me!” I laughed, covering my mouth slightly with my hand. Harry’s eyes flashed between my lips and my eyes constantly. His huge dimpled grin grew even bigger. A few chuckles escaped his pink lips as he watched me giggle over his cheesy behavior.

“Come on sweetheart, you’ve got to let me be a bit cheeky, cheesy every once in a while.” Harry teased with a wink, inching the fork full of dessert closer and closer. I sighed before humoring him. Harry gently fed me the warm cake, a pleased expression across his face.

“Ah Lou, you weren’t kidding when you said H was all loved up now! He’s an even bigger goof!” Tom joked, earning a round of claps and giggles from Lux who was sat in his lap.

“Hey!” Harry complained, jutting out his bottom lip in a pout. He leaned over the table to flick Lux’s pigtails around. “Don’t laugh at me little girl!”

“In all honesty though Harry,” Lou began, “I like this one. If you hurt Ally those ‘luscious curls’ of yours will receive a visit from my flat iron!”

“No worries.” Harry said gently, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. He was always doing little things like that. Those sweet, gentle gestures calmed whatever nerve, whatever thoughts, I had moments before. Harry looked down at me with his deep green eyes. With a smile, he pressed another adoring kiss onto the top of my head. “I quite love this one.”

“Do you hear that?” I asked Harry while he fiddled with the keys to the front door. I had my ear pressed to the cool wood, listening to the noises coming from within the cottage.

“What are you on about?” Harry wondered as he was about to put the key in the lock.

“Shh. Listen.” I told him. Confused, Harry rested his ear on the door as well. Together we listened to the boys yelling random things around. “I think they’re singing.” As soon as the words left my mouth, Harry sighed and shook his head. A smile appeared at his lips as if he were thinking of something funny.

“Louis must have found the Xbox Karaoke game I hid in my room from him.” He explained while running his fingers through his fringe. Quietly, we opened the door and snuck in. The music from before stopped indicating the song must have ended.

“Ha! Louis can we do this song?” I heard Zayn ask before bursting into laughter. The other boys followed suit, but from the sound of the opening notes, Louis obliged to Zayn’s request. I grabbed Harry’s hand, placing a finger to my lips in attempts to tell him to stay quiet. We moved slowly with our backs against the wall until we reached the end. The two of us peeked at the four of them through the mirror straight ahead. Louis and Niall were standing front and center with individual microphones while Zayn and Liam stood on the couches with theirs. All of a sudden Liam and Niall started singing.

“I GOT A POCKET, GOT A POCKTFUL OF SUNSHINE
I’VE GOT A LOVE AND I KNOW THAT IT’S ALL MINE OH, OH, OOOOHH!
DO WHAT YOU WANT, BUT YOU’RE NEVER GONNA BREAK ME,
STICKS AND STONE ARE NEVER GONNA SHAKE ME OH, OH, OOOOOOOOOH!”

Harry and I were barely able to keep it together. I was about to burst out into laughter when Harry clamped his hand gently over my mouth. We were trying to keep our laughs silent just as Louis and Zayn opened their mouths to sing. Zayn belted the words while Louis echoed in front of him almost equally as loud.

“TAKE ME AWAY! (TAKE ME AWAY!)
A SECRET PLACE! (A SECRET PLACE!)
A SWEET ESCAPE! (A SWEET ESCAPE!)
TAKE ME AWAAAAYYY!
TAKE ME AWAY! (TAKE ME AWAY!)
TO BETTER DAYS! (TO BETTER DAYS!)
TAKE ME AWAY! (TAKE ME AWAY!)
A HIDING PLAAAAAACE!”

“Wait just a little bit longer!” Harry whispered in my ear between laughs. “I’ve seen them do this before. Louis’ big solo is coming up!” We waited through Liam and Niall singing another verse and Zayn and Louis sing one more chorus before Louis’ shining moment finally came. I had to keep myself from collapsing on the ground from holding in my laughter.

“THERE’S A PLACE THAT I GO
THAT NOBODY KNOWS
WHERE THE RIVERS FLOW
AND I CALL IT HOME
AND THERE’S NO MORE LIES
AND THE DARKNESS IS LIGHT
AND NOBODY CRIES
THERE’S ONLY BUTTERFLIIIIIIIIES!”

Finally, Harry and I couldn’t take it anymore. Harry fell to his knees, holding his stomach he was laughing so hard, pulling me down with him. The boys all stopped what they were doing and whipped around to face us.

“Oi! What the bloody hell are you two doing!” Louis wondered, peering at us over Liam’s shoulder.

“We’re…laughing…at…you…weirdoes!” Harry responded through breaths. He pulled me over to him to nuzzle his head in the crook of my head. He continued to shake with loud, deep laughs.

“I’m not the one who sang ‘Love Song’ by Sara Bareilles for a week straight!” Louis shot back, a wicked grin spreading across his face. Harry immediately shot up. He jabbed his pointer finger right in Louis’ direction.

“We do NOT talk about that!” He said sternly, while circling his arm around my waist. Love Song?

“Wait! I have to hear about this.” I said, fascinated. In my head I pictured little Harry strolling around, belting lyrics to Sara Bareilles while he was making lunch, while he was getting ready, and while he was playing FIFA or something. The idea was completely intriguing. I’m sure he got the song stuck in the other boys heads.

“No you don’t,” Harry assured me.

“You see, love, we were playing karaoke and curly over here stumbled upon the song.” Louis began.

“I’m not kidding you, for seven whole days I’m pretty sure he belted the song during every shower!” Niall added.

“Yeah and whenever he cooked dinner he was humming it!” Zayn noted, flashing Harry a little wink.

“Proper addicted.” Liam confirmed. “Thank god that got out of your head.”

“Hush up.” Harry mumbled, lifting me to my feet. The boys chuckled at Harry’s embarrassment. “We’re heading to bed.” He told them before dragging me up the stairs. Just as we were about to take the first step Harry turned back and, at the top of his lungs, sang:

“I’M NOT GONNA WRITE YOU A LOVE SONG
‘CAUSE YOU ASKED FOR IT
‘CAUSE YOU NEED ONE, YOU SEE!”

Quickly, Harry rushed us upstairs just before the couch cushion Louis threw slammed against the banister.
