Danger

Chapter One.

Georgia stared out of the window, watching the rain hit the road hard and fast, droplets sliding across the smooth surface of the glass window. She sat under her blanket, her small hands curled around a warm cup of tea, her forehead pressed against the cool surface of the glass, her mind far away.

She thought of rainy seasons back home. Her mother would make hot chocolate for her, and Georgia would stay wrapped up in her blankets, sipping the rich cocoa, the two females having endless conversation about anything under the sun. Her mother would tease her about her boyfriend and sometimes other boys in her school, and sometimes tell her stories from her own childhood. Georgia would sit and listen carefully, hanging on to every word.
And then her father would come in and interrupt their conversations on purpose, tease them and then she watch the two kiss lovingly, wondering I she’d ever find love like that.

Her boyfriend Lucas had come very close to that. They were together for as long as she could remember, and they often spent their time together wrapped up in their own bubble, bearing close resemblance to the cheesy couples people thought only existed in TV. Their friends would tease them but they both knew they were just secretly jealous because they didn’t have what Lucas and Georgia did.

Thinking of her home and her old life made her sick to the stomach. The nostalgia made her head spin and brought tears to her eyes. She sighed and closed her eyes, gritting her teeth and forcing her thoughts away from them. There was no point in dwelling over them. Those times were never going to come back, and the sooner she accepted it, the better she’d be.

A soft knock sounded on the bedroom door, and Georgia was pulled away from her thoughts, for which she was glad. Seconds later the door opened and her cousin walked in, smiling tentatively.

“Hey,” Melissa said softly, walking in.

Melissa and Georgia looked nothing alike, there was no evidence to prove that their mothers were sisters. The two daughters resembled each other the way the two mothers did—not at all. Melissa’s mother had straight, dark hair, a tiny nose, and Melissa had taken after her. Georgia’s golden hair fell down her shoulders in loose curls, her features soft, not too sharp.

“Hi,” Georgia said, scooting over to make some space for Mel to sit down.

Up until three months ago, Georgia didn’t know she even had a cousin. Her parents had never spoken of her mother’s sister. They’d never mentioned her, she’d never seen any photographs of her. Georgia silently ached to know what could have possibly happened to keep two sisters away from each other this way.

“So, listen,” Mel said hesitantly. “It’s been a while since you’ve been here and well…I was wondering if you were really bored. Because,” she added with a roll of her eyes, “I know I am. Staying at home sucks.”

Georgia chuckled. She was quite bored, but mostly, she just missed home. “I’m a bit bored, yeah.” She admitted. “What’s up?”

“Well, there’s a party tonight,” Mel said. “Will you come?”

Georgia hesitated. Melissa had been nothing but nice to Georgia, even though her aunt had been slightly distant. Mel had tried her best to make Georgia feel comfortable and at home, and Georgia appreciated it. But she was aware of Mel’s other side, the slightly more aggressive aspect of her personality. She knew that Mel liked to party—and not in the way Georgia was familiar with. Mel drank, often came back home smashed, snuck out, and even did drugs once in a while. Georgia didn’t judge, she wouldn’t do that. It was, after all, Melissa’s life. But Georgia knew that she wanted to avoid even coming anywhere close to that world—the world she wasn’t familiar with.

“I…”

“Look, come on,” Mel insisted. “You’ve been trapped in here for ages, G. I promise you’ll have fun. My friends have been dying to meet you anyway. Please?”

“Mel, I don’t…”

“Please,” Mel begged again, staring at her cousin pleadingly. “Please, please, please?”

Georgia remained quiet for a few seconds, and then sighed. She didn’t want to let down her cousin who had been so lovely to her, when she could have easily made Georgia feel like she didn’t belong. And besides, one time couldn’t hurt, could it? “Alright, okay.”

Mel squealed happily.

---

Georgia followed Melissa inside the house, her stomach churning with nervousness. This party was like the typical house parties you saw on television, and Georgia was already thinking that coming here wasn’t such a good idea after all. She wasn’t familiar with alcohol at all, and if it was drugs that the two kids were doing behind the couch, then she was going to have to get out of here very soon.

“Harry’s there!” Melissa said excitedly, and before she knew it, Georgia was being dragged across the house by her hand, unsure of as to where exactly she was being taken.

Mel let go of Georgia’s hand and launched herself at a boy sitting on the couch, immediately taking her place on his lap.

From the moment she looked at him, she couldn’t look away. His beauty was unreal to the point where it should have been illegal. For just a few seconds, Georgia forgot everything around her and simply stared at him. A mop of curls sat on his head, disheveled and yet suiting him somehow, his full, pink lips stretched to form a half smile directed at Mel. His jaw was sharp and square, fair skin that made his lips seem pinker somehow, and perfect square nose. His vibrant green eyes focused on her and for a moment she forgot how to breathe. His brow furrowed in confusion, clearly wondering who she was. His tongue flicked his bottom lip once, and he continued staring at her.

“Who’s this?” he asked Melissa slowly, his voice deep.

“This is my cousin Georgia,” Mel replied. “I told you about her.”

Harry nodded simply, and it was clear that he did not, in fact, remember Melissa telling him about Georgia. He looked back at Melissa and she pulled him in for a kiss, and Georgia was instantly forgotten.

---

Georgia couldn’t remember just how long she’d been sitting on the couch, hands folded in her lap, her back straight and posture stiff. Everyone around her was either drinking or smoking, evidently having fun chatting and gossiping and even making out. Georgia sat at the edge of the couch, next to someone whose name she’d been told but didn’t remember; smoke wafting through the air around her, mingling with the smell of sweat and alcohol. Georgia was uncomfortable and bored out of her mind—she just wanted to go home.

The only thing that provided her even slight distraction was Melissa’s boyfriend. Harry. He was so beautiful that Georgia found it hard to restrain herself from stealing small glances at him every now and then. Usually his face stayed hidden, mouth glued to Melissa’s, arms wrapped around each other so tightly that she couldn’t figure out whose hands were whose. Georgia felt the urge to roll her eyes. These two were the epitome of the phrase ‘get a room’.

But he was so beautiful. The way his long fingers held the joint in his hand, muscles in his upper arms flexing as he brought it up to his lips, plump lips wrapping around it. The hollow of his cheeks as he took a hit and then his chest relaxing as he exhaled the smoke. Occasionally he’d reach down beside him and whisper something in Melissa’s ear, or his lips would move along her jaw and watching the flex of his jaw as his lips moved, the indents in his cheek when he smiled made Georgia’s stomach churn.

Harry and Melissa didn’t look anything like the perfect couples on TV, but they looked happy. And watching them made Georgia sad. She was reminded, quite painfully, of Lucas, and she began wondering what he was doing there. Was he missing her like she was missing him? He’d called her up last week, and his voice rang clearly through her head, even now. It made her heart ache. He’d sounded sad, and he told her over and over just how much he missed her.

She was broken out of her thoughts when her name was called out for the first time in about two hours. She blinked, hoping she didn’t look as disoriented as she felt, and looked up. It was Melissa who had called her, and she doubted anyone else even remembered her name.

“G,” Mel said, “you’ve been sitting like that for ages.” So she had noticed. She gestured at the joint between
Harry’s fingers. “Want a hit?”

Georgia’s response was immediate. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “I’m good.”

Harry looked at Georgia briefly, his eyebrows knitting in a frown yet again. Georgia wondered just why he frowned so much every time he looked at her. “You sure?” he asked, and it took a second for Georgia to realize that he was speaking to her.

“Uh, yeah,” she mumbled shyly, and Harry didn’t ask her again.

“Hey, Mel,” Georgia said, getting up. “I’m gonna head home.”

Melissa’s eyes widened. “Already?” she gawked. “G, we just got here.”

“I know, but…”

Mel sighed, but she didn’t insist. One of the things Georgia had come to love about her cousin was that she understood when Georgia needed her space, and when she needed to be left alone. She understood that Georgia wasn’t exactly used to the life Mel lived, and she respected that.

“Alright, I guess we should leave,” Mel sighed.

“Oh, no,” Georgia said quickly. “Mel, I’ll walk. Our house is not that far away.”

“Don’t be silly.” Melissa said.

“No, Mel,” Georgia sighed. “I’ll be—”

“I’ll drop her home.”

It was Harry who had spoken, and yet again, his silky smooth voice seemed to start fireworks in Georgia’s stomach. She hesitantly looked at him, not really able to meet his sparkling green orbs.

“What?” Mel asked.

“Yeah, I should be heading home.” Harry said.

“Do you have a curfew?” Mel teased.

Harry rolled his eyes and chuckled. “There’s just some stuff at home I forgot I hadn’t finished,” he told her. “I’ll drop her home.”

“God, you both suck.” Mel pouted. “Fine. Drop her safely, okay? Georgia, tell mum I’m staying at Emma’s tonight. I’ll sneak into Harry’s house later.” She looked at Harry and dropped him a cheeky wink.

“Er, not tonight, Mel.” Harry said, his voice suddenly guarded. “I told you, there’s stuff I have to do at home. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

It was clear that Melissa felt hurt, and the atmosphere had turned quite awkward suddenly. Harry didn’t seem fazed, however. He only looked at his girlfriend evenly, not bothered by her expression.

Finally, Mel huffed. “Okay, whatever.” She said. “I guess I’ll just see you at home then, Georgia.” She managed a small smile that Georgia returned, feeling sorry for the other girl.

Harry leaned down and planted a small kiss on Melissa’s mouth (Georgia pointedly looked away), and then got up. He briefly glanced at Georgia.

“You coming?” he asked her, and Georgia hurried after him, but not before shooting Mel another smile and a quick wave.

---

Georgia sat in the car, feeling quite nervous. She wasn’t sure why, though. He was, after all, just a boy. Moreover, he was her cousin’s boyfriend. Surely, he wasn’t going to try and hit on Georgia. That would be awfully cheap, and somehow, she didn’t expect that behavior from him. He didn’t look the type. But then she thought of the way he’d turned down Mel’s offer without much hesitation or any sign of awkwardness. Maybe things weren’t that perfect with this couple.

But who was she to even wonder about that? It was none of her business. She didn’t know Harry, and she honestly didn’t care much. She just wanted to get home as quickly as possible.

“Are you always this quiet?” Harry asked finally, breaking the thick air of silence that seemed to have fallen around them.

Georgia glanced at him, and he seemed far more relaxed then she was. He was leaning against the seat, one hand resting on the steering wheel, the other resting on his lap, fingers gently drumming against his tight black jeans to the rhythm of the soft music coming from his radio. Occasionally he’d lift his hand to run it through his curls. He was looking ahead at the road. She was once again swept away by his effortless beauty and his air of nonchalance.

“No, I…” she found herself stuttering in his presence and she felt awkward and stupid.

“You basically sat through the party without saying a word,” Harry said, and she was surprised to see he’d noticed her. “Not the type of crowd you usually hang around with?”

“Not really,” she told him, her voice softy and shy.

Harry nodded. “Why did you move here?” he asked her.

Suddenly she was even more uncomfortable in his presence, not at all wanting to share any of her personal history with him. “Didn’t Mel tell you?” she asked him warily.

“She must have,” he shrugged. “I forgot. You don’t have to tell me, you know?” He looked at her and smirked, and it almost seemed like he was enjoying making her uncomfortable. “You’re an awkward little thing, aren’t you?”

“I’m not little,” Georgia mumbled childishly, her voice defensive. It made her upset that he’d called her out on her shy nature, and how evident it was that she was uncomfortable and uneasy he made her.

Harry laughed loudly. “Actually, you’re quite tiny.” He told her. “Your hand’s tinier than my palm.”
Involuntarily, her gaze fell to his hands. “Your hands are abnormally massive,” she retorted.

“Girls seem to enjoy it,” he told her, and the playful suggestiveness in his tone made her blush furiously and she looked away from him, staring outside the window.

Harry laughed again. “You’re no fun,” he said. She was sure he was teasing her, but being called boring by someone like him made her feel upset nonetheless. “You’re nothing like Mel.”

And that statement stuck with her till they reached her house.

Harry stopped the car and Georgia reached to undo her seat belt. She found it stuck and tugged at it. Harry sighed.

“Yeah, it does that sometimes,” he told her. Then he unbuckled his own belt and reached over her. “Hold on.”

She froze when Harry reached towards her, and leaned over her to reach on the other side for her belt. He smelled so good that Georgia had a momentary urge to lean in and smell him more, to breathe him in. She felt the heat of his body coming off of him in waves as he deftly undid her seatbelt with seemingly no effort, just a tug and then it was off. He looked at her, his green orbs piercing into hers, and his lips twitched as if to form a smile. He was once again enjoying the way she reacted to him. He lingered for slightly longer than necessary, and then pulled away. Georgia
let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.

“Good night then, Georgia,” he spoke to her in that deep voice again.

“Good night,” she mumbled in response and then hurried out of the car. She turned and watched him drive away, and she could swear he was smiling the entire time she watched him go.
