Immortality

I feel weightless. Empty. I can feel hard earth beneath me, but I don't dare open my eyes. I have no idea what I will see. So I just shut my eyes tighter, trying to ignore the stinging feeling in my bare arms and legs. "Are you alright?" I hear a soft, soothing voice ask. I try to answer, but my mouth is frozen. All that escapes is a croak. "Can you talk?" says that voice again, soft as silk. I try to open my eyes, and they fly open. I can see trees around me. "Why are we in a forest?" I ask, surprised to hear my voice so soft and as smooth as silk.
"We couldn't have anyone seeing you, now could we?" he chuckles softly. I attempt to smile, and it comes naturally. Without thinking, I raise my arms up to that heavenly face over me, and stroke his cheek. It's so soft.
"Stop that," he says, smirking and looking amused. "You're about to kill me."
I laugh, and then get up, noticing that it seems far easier than it was about five hours ago. "How long have I been out?" I ask, just for the sake of having something to say.
"About an hour. I'm surprised. I thought it would be much slower than that." says Harry.
"Hey, don't judge me! I win first place in an inter-school race!" I laugh. It seems remarkable that it's so easy to be around with a stranger who probably just killed me.
"So, now what?"
He looks at me incredulously. "Don't you feel hungry?" he asks.
That's when I realize my canines at my upper jaw are slightly longer than they used to be. "Yes," I say, surprised at the way my lip curls up in a devilish smile. "Wanna hunt?" he asks. I smirk and say, "Race you to the edge of the next town."
He laughs. "Watch out. Things are going to get ugly." And he races off.
"Hey!" I say indignantly as I start running. It feels good to stretch out my muscles, feels good to run like that. Free and open. I run faster, and soon I catch up with Harry. He runs with style; with grace. He looks over at me and smirks. I almost stop running. God, that smirk will kill me someday. "Give me a warning next time!" I yell at him, and then speed up. Soon I'm way ahead of him, and then, right at the edge of the next town, which is full of people bustling about, doing their shopping, going to cinemas, etc., etc. Harry reaches me just then, and I say cheerfully, "Woo-hoo! That was awesome!"
"You're pretty fast, for a vampire." he says.
"Merci! Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
"Okay, now I think you being an immortal has done something to your brain. You're way more cheerful than I thought you'd be, considering your parents just died yesterday."
My parents. My parents! I gasp. "My parents!" I exclaim. He rolls his eyes. "Glad you finally remember them."
"Wait, wasn't all this part of the deal?" I ask. "Shouldn't they be alive?"
He falters. "What? Don't tell me all of this was just a big prank so I could become one of you?" I say, my heart slowing down. Wait, what am I talking about? My heart has stopped.
"Whether they want to come back from the dead, is not my option. You've done what you needed to do. Now it is up to them." he says softly.
I'm aghast. So I became a vampire to bring my parents back from the dead, but apparently, it's up to them. "You should've told me beforehand!" I gasp, horrified.
"I wasn't sure then. Now, seeing that they are not back, I'm sure that it's their choice."
"You idiot!" I say, smacking his arm. He dodges me, saying, "Hurting me will only do you so much. Please be patient."
I back away, breathing heavily. Suddenly I feel relaxed. "Now can we go back to hunting?" he asks. I nod. "But this town is full of people. We'll be seen."
He smiles. "No. Just watch me."
Suddenly, he vanishes. I look around frantically, trying to find him. "Where are you?" I call out. I hear a low chuckle behind me and whip around, only to find air.
"Are you invisible?" I ask.
"No," he says, to my right. I turn, finding nothing. "Where the fuck are you?" I say.
"There's no need to be rude, Belle."
This time it's to my left. I turn, again and again to find nothing. "Stop this game, please! It's making me dizzy," I finally say, not finding him for the tenth time. He appears in front of me, smiling mischievously. "Were you invisible?" I ask. He shakes his head. "I have super fast reflexes."
"Oh,"
"You will have them too, but only after you satisfy your hunger."
He takes my hand and walks into town. We blend in with the crowd, until he leads me up an empty alleyway. "What-"
"Shh," he says, looking both ways to see if we are being watched. "Watch how I do it."
He ducks into the crowd, grabs a teenage girl with curly blonde hair and pushes her roughly into our alley. I gasp, shocked. "We- we have to kill her?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. He nods, wearing a guilty expression on his face. "B-b-but I can't!"
"You have to! Or else you'll go crazy from hunger," he insists.
I cringe at the thought. Kill an innocent human girl...it was out of the question.
"No. I'll go crazy if I have to. But I'm not going to kill her."
He shrugs and says, "Fine."
I can't bear to look as Harry reaches for the girl's throat and slices it open.

*********
Three hours later, Harry and I walk hand-in-hand toward his house- mansion is a better word- to meet the others.
"Tell me about these friends of yours," I say, in an attempt to make conversation. He smiles.
"Well, my best friend is Louis. You could say he's a fairly easy person to get along with. I'm sure you'll like him. And then there's my sister, Gemma. She's very...stylish. She doesn't want anything to be messy, or dirty. She's also kind of strict. You'll like Niall. He's..."
I don't hear the rest of what he is saying. I catch a whiff of something delicious- something savoury. I wander off in that direction, Harry following. The smell came from a riverbank. Deers and gazelles walk around, occasionally sipping water from the river. The delicious scent comes from a small, bony gazelle, who is farther from the rest. I resist the urge to fling myself over. She turns, and suddenly, I can't stop myself. I lunge toward it, and the rest of the deers and gazelles see me and run, but the gazelle I have is slow. By the time the other animals have reached somewhere safe, I have already bitten into the gazelle's neck and savour the taste.

When I finish, I discard the animal's body in a bush and walk over to Harry. I realize he has been watching me the entire time. "What was that all about?" he asks, bewildered. I blush. "Am I not allowed to satisfy my hunger now?"
"No, but it's fascinating. I've never before seen a vampire actually feed on animals. We've always had a taste for humans."
"That's it! We should hunt animals, not humans. That way our hunger will be satisfied and we'll also be able to keep humans alive." I say brightly. But Harry shakes his head. "That might be easy for you. For vampires, the first blood we've tasted will be the only way to feed ourselves. For my family, all of us have tasted only human blood. You on the other hand, have tasted only animal blood. That means only you can feed on animals."
"Oh," I say, understanding. "Well, then, we should meet your family."
"Yes. Let's go."
And, taking my hand, he speeds off toward the heart of the forest and when I see the huge mansion I gasp.
"How did you manage to find a mansion in the forest?" I as, amazed.
"We didn't find it, we built it." replies Harry. "Look, they've been expecting you."
