The End is Approaching [PAUSED]

Nineteen - More Broken Hearts

*Destiny’s POV*

“Jeez, Mum! We’ve been to at least fifty different stores already! I forgot why we even came out in the first place.” I whined, dragging my feet down the shopping mall floor tiles, following my Mum as she prances down the wide hallway.

Mum loved shopping. She loved the perfumed, air-conditioned mall. She basked in the attention of the sales staff and pawed over different fabrics and textures. She would try on new boots and hats, get a free makeover and then head to the spa for a manicure. The garments she brought home would often never be worn or maybe worn once. She was a shop-a-holic. It was a compulsion to her. She would rather eat porridge for a whole month so she would have more money to shop than eating a proper diet.

“Oh hush, Destiny.” Mum shooed me off, “Oh my gosh! Come here, look at these dresses!”

“Woah!” I cried out, as Mum yanked me into the TOPSHOP Boutique.

“Aren’t you going to the Fall Masquerade Ball with Owen?” Mum questioned me, as she dreamingly gazed all the variety of dresses.

“Yeah, as friends. Nothing big.” I shrugged, plopping into the couch seat near Mum.

“Nothing big? These are your last high school memories!” Mum insisted, grazing a navy-blue dress.

“It’s going to be my last memory period.” I sigh, rolling my eyes. My words caused Mum to drop the dress and frown a little looking at the ground.

“Destiny, please I’m having a good day,” Mum says, not looking at me before we continue her search for a dress.

“I’m sorry,” I sigh, remembering I shouldn’t bring this topic up too often, especially when my parents are in a good mood, which isn’t very often anymore.

“Look at this pink one! It’s so gorgeous!” Mum exclaimed, feeling the fabric.

“Mum, seriously I don’t want to go and buy some expensive dress. People only wear these once and never look at it again.” I insist, coming to my Mum’s side.

“Then, what are you going to wear?” Mum questioned me.

“I don’t know some dress from my closet.” I shrugged, tracing my fingers of the silk of the dresses.

“At least try on some. We gotta go get the groceries, soon. So, it won’t be long.” Mum pressed, looking at me with pleading eyes.

“Fine.” I gave in, taking the pink dress from my Mum.

I walk out of the dressing room, the pink dress draped around my body. I had to admit it looked gorgeous, but I have absolutely no use for it.

I peek around the aisle, where I assume she is.

“Mum, I have to admit-“ I start, I stopped in my tracks, seeing that Harry was solemnly looking at my mother as she telling him something. I can’t see her face so I can’t tell if she is angry at him or just asking him how he’s doing.

*Harry’s POV*

I hate everything about shopping. The crowds. The queues. The aching feet. Everything.

Also taking into account on all the overly attentive shopping assistants, the perky seasonal music playing in every damn store, and all the special deals tempting me to spend even more.

It was all too much, especially if you’re here with a girl. Bella would go crazy running to every single store and get at least two items from each. I swear I’m like her butler in these stores. Destiny wasn’t all that into shopping, I suddenly remembered, looking over at the video game store across the large hall as they were displaying the new Destiny video game. It was a lot more enjoyable with her.

“Harry, you gotta try on some shoes!” Bella demanded, pointing to the TOPSHOP right next to the video game store.

“Alright. Alright. I’m going. Don’t buy the whole store, alright?” I say, raising my hands, as I slouched over to the shop.

As I looked over the large variety of dress shoes, I turn a corner and bump into Mrs Baker.

“Oh. Uhm, hi.” I nervously say, rubbing the back of my neck. She looked a little shocked. My heart beat a little quicker than normal, wondering what she was about to say to me. My last encounter with her husband wasn’t so pleasant. A small smile danced on her lips as her blue eyes greeted me warmly, allowing me to let out a conscience sigh of relief.

“Hello, Harry. It’s so been so long, hasn’t it?”

“Yeah,” I say, giving a small laugh, not knowing what to say or what she thought of me, now.
“Uhm …” Mrs Baker mumbled, not knowing if she should ask me about a certain topic.

Quickly realising she must’ve have been thinking of Mum, I added, “Mum’s alright. She’s on one of those trips. Dad’s okay, as well. You know being busy with his work and everything.”

“Mum, I have to admit-“ I hear a familiar voice say, but stops abruptly. My muscles tense a little when I hear her voice. I look up briefly, enough time to get a glimpse of Destiny in a pink dress, before looking right back down. Pink always looked so beautiful on her. I thought stupidly. I could tell that I was scowling, but I really didn’t care, because so was Destiny.

“Right.” Mrs Baker nods, a small smile on her face, “Thank you. Thank you so much, Harry.”

“No problem.” I nodded, leaving to go look for shoes in a different store.

After the scene between Destiny’s father and me, Dad found out and completely flipped. He began raging about how someone he thought of as a brother could do something so reckless to his son, over something so stupid. Something that they’ve done several times when they were our age.

Dad decided he’d go an confront Mr Baker, but it looked like the man had enough alcohol in his system to kill ten people without giving a god damn fuck. Dad and Mr Baker screamed and fought one another until they settled on never speaking to each other again. Mr Baker made Destiny and Mrs Baker to swear to never talk to anyone in our family, ever again, and Dad did the same for us.

That night it wasn’t only my heart that was broken, but my parents as well.

*Destiny’s POV*

“So, what were you two talking about?” I casually asked, playing with the clothes on the rack.

“Nothing. I was just asking about his Mum,” Mum confesses.

“Oh.” I say, a guilty feeling over coming to my body, “I’m sorry, Momma.”

“Oh no, Baby. It’s alright. I’m alright. I swear.” Mum insisted, hugging me tightly. “That dress looks beautiful on you. Are you sure you don’t want it? I’m pretty sure it’s not that expensive,” Mum quickly says, checking the price tag. “Jesus Christ! Never mind, you told me you didn’t want a dress. Let’s just go ahead and put that away, and get the groceries down and to the checkout so we can get out of this place.”

“Yeah okay.” I nodded, laughing.
