The End is Approaching [PAUSED]

Thirteen - Broken Promises

*Bella’s POV*
*First Week of October*

The autumn breeze spun my hair around, wild, and pinked my cheeks. The warmth that has been in the wind just last week had either evaporated into the sky or leached into the earth. The once green trees were now dressed in gold and red leaves.

I was slightly shivering in my gym t-shirt and shorts, as my class went back to the school after spending a period of phys. Ed outside.

Quickly changing out of gym outfit and into my school uniform, I found Harry with Zayn by their lockers.

“Hey!” I waved at them, with a smile.

“Hey.” They replied back to me, before continuing on with their conversation as Harry threw his arm around my shoulders.

Zayn was going off about something that happened in his Chemistry, just as Destiny walked passed us. I noticed both Zayn and Harry tense a little as she did, but they didn’t say a word about it. I haven’t gotten a chance to actually met her properly, but I really am dying to. She seems likes such a nice person, despite everything everyone else is saying. I mean no one has solid answers, so nothing they say can really be true.

Zayn, Harry and I made our way to our lunch table, joining up with the rest of their friends. I can’t really call them my friends because I’m not really close with them. Plus, I don’t really know them very well, other than Harry and Niall. I’ve tried to get to know them, by they seem to be blocking me out.

Jesus never knew making friends would be this difficult.

I started up a conversation with Niall, just as I noticed Destiny walk by. I’m never going to make friends if I don’t pipe up.

I get up from my seat and go after Destiny, “Hey Destiny!” I called to her, as I noticed everyone quietly staring.

“What … Oh, hi. It’s Bella, right?” She asks, me as she stopped and turned my direction.

“Yeah.” I nod, happy that she knew I existed. I’m really keen on making new friends, and maybe Destiny won’t be the most ideal person, according to the people I hang out with, but at least it’s something, so I really couldn’t care less.

“We met last year, yeah?” Destiny narrows her eyes onto me.

“Hmm? Oh yeah, last year when you first came here. I remember that you found my crying over my deadbeat ex.” I laugh lightly. “You had a thing with a boy that time, didn’t you?” Probably not the best opener question, damn it.

“Uhm, yeah.” She nods.

“Is he still in the picture?” I asked, wiggling my eyebrows up and down, biting down on my lip.

She tenses a little, before saying, “No. It wasn’t working out.”

“Oh,” I say, damn it, you asked the wrong question, Bella. “Sorry.”

“How’s that thing with your ex?” Destiny asks me after a pause for silence.

“Oh, great actually! I found someone else!”

“Oh, yeah? Who?”

“Harry,” I reply with a big smile.

After a slight tense, she shakes it off and says, “Oh. That’s cool.” As if she really couldn’t care less.

“Yeah, it’s actually so amazing, because-.“ I start, trying to keep the conversation going.

“That’s wonderful Bella. Listen, I’m sorry, but I’m thrilled I got to met you. I mean we should definitely hang out sometime, but this damn heat is going to kill all of us. I’m going to go talk to the janitor. I’m hella sure this fucking school has an air-conditioner, and they’ll end up turning it on during the fricken winter.” Destiny quickly says, cutting me off.

“Yeah, I heard about the old janitor and the library only having the air-conditioning.” I quickly add, hoping she would stay a little longer.

“Yeah. It’s so the computers don’t bowl up, but apparently, they don’t care about us bowling up! Jesus, I’ll talk to you later, yeah? I need to see this man. Bye, Bella.” Destiny smiles at me, before leaving with a wave.

“Bye.” I wave back, slightly disappointed that the conversation didn’t last long. Did I say something wrong?

I make my way back next to Harry on the bench, as I silently watch her.

“Don’t worry, she blew everyone off.” June laughs lightly, as she whispers to me. I nod with a small smile.

Owen walks up to Destiny’s side as the two of them walk over to the old janitor, who was sitting in the corner of the lunch room, as he glared at everyone like a hawk. Owen had a bag held behind his back, as he walked.

“Alright, Mr … Marino.” Destiny starts, “You gotta turn on the air conditioning, the heat is going to kill all of us.”

“No. Too cold.” Mr Marino, the janitor, demanded angrily.

“Okay, you see we knew you’d say that so we got you something,” Owen says as he pulled out a large coat from his bag.

“Coat?” Mr Marino questions him.

“Mhmm, not just any coat. It’ll keep you warm if you get too chilli because of the A/C. You see, and it has two layers. Plus, it looks so beautiful.” Destiny pressed, trying to sell him the jacket.

“Try on.” Mr Marino says, glaring at the two of them.

“Yeah, of course, you can try it on,” Owen says, holding up the jacket for him.

“No. You try on.” Mr Marino demands, pointing at Owen.

“Oh … Uhm, alright.” Owen nods, as he cautiously pulled on the coat.

“Spin.” Mr Marino demanded.

“What?” Owen choked.

“Spin.” Mr Marino repeated.

“Uh, okay.” Owen nodded, as he slowly spun around for Mr Marino to examine the jacket.

“Mhmm.” Mr Marino nodded attentively, as Destiny tried to suppress her laughs and Owen shot her death-glares. “Walk.”

“Walk?” Owen repeats, curiously, choking on his words.

“Yes. Walk fashionably.” Mr Marino insists, motioning him to do the catwalk down the lunchroom.

“Okay. Uhm. Here it goes.” Owen nods, as he hesitantly cat walked away and back to Destiny and the Janitor. By now, Destiny was struggling to hold in her laughs, as she clutched her stomach and everyone else was watching so many snickers, and chuckles were heard from all around the lunch room.

“Give.” Mr Marino says, as Owen quickly strips of the coat and hands it to him. Immediately, Mr Marino took the coat and disappeared.

“What? That’s it.” Destiny asked, surprised.

“Damnit. That was such a waste of time and money.” Owen groans, sitting at the lunch table as he wiped his forehead clean of the sweat that gathered.

“I wouldn’t say, a complete waste of time.” Destiny bursts into laughter.

“Shut up, you.” Owen smiled, spraying some of his sweat on Destiny.

“Ew! Gross, Owen!” Destiny laughed, trying to dough the sweat.

Just then, someone from the far corner of the lunch room, screamed out, “There is cool air coming from the vents! He turned it on! He turned it on!” Just as everyone felt the cold air touch them, they began to cheer. A smirk was plastered on Owen’s lips, as Destiny bite down on her lips happily.

“Wow. She did it.” Neal says, with a small smile on his face.

Moments later, Mr Marino came back with his coat on him. “How I look?”

“Marvellous,” Destiny exclaimed, as she and Owen begun clapping at him, as he spun around for them. A few of the kids joined in on their clapping, and a few more cheers were heard around the school.

As the cheering died down, as Mr Marino, Owen and Destiny finished their conversation, the two friends made their way for the door out of the lunchroom, which was just passed our table.

“So, I was thinking, maybe this weekend we can hang out, yeah?” Destiny says to me, as she walks by our table.

“Yeah!” I say, a little too excited. “I mean, yeah it’d be cool,” I repeat a little less enthusiastic.

“Cool.” Destiny smiled, with a little laugh, as she was about to leave.

*Harry’s POV*

Destiny and Bella were talking, and it took everything in me not to snap. Seeing Destiny this close to us, made my blood boil, but guilt still stirred at the pit of my stomach as I remembered the dream had about her from this weekend.

You’re over her. You hate her, Harry. Stop feeling guilty. She should be the one feeling guilty. But look at her walking past us as if she doesn’t give a fuck.

Just as Destiny was about to leave, Bella noticed her necklace, “Oh my gosh. Can I see your necklace?” she asked.

“My … My necklace?” Destiny says stuttering a little, touching the charm on the chain.

“Yeah.” Bella nodded with a smile.

“Uh, sure,” Destiny says, with a little nod, as she leant in a little bit so Bella could see it clearly.

“Wow. It looks just like Harry’s!” Bella exclaimed, and immediately everyone tensed up, including Destiny.

“Punishment is usually always more painful than the crime that’s been done,” I say to Destiny, as I hanging over her, my arms on either side of Destiny, supporting me up.
“Well, I learned my lesson,” Destiny swore, with a smile, laying underneath me, her arms on top of her belly, as she looked up to me.
“Good,” I smiled back at her. Somehow Destiny’s smiled seemed to warm me up inside and managed to give me a sunburn.
Destiny was staring at something at my neck, when she said, “Harry? What is this?” she asked, holding onto the golden charm attached to my necklace in her hands. It was my golden chains, it had a gold paper aeroplane charm on the end of it.
“It’s a necklace, I’ve sort of always had it, you know,” I only say, rolling to one side of the bed, next to her.
“It’s beautiful,” She smiles, still examining the charm as she twirled it around her fingers. I couldn’t help but laugh lightly at her smile, as I allowed her to play with my necklace.
“Yeah, it is. My mother told me that it was a symbol of love or some shit. She said that one day, I will find someone with this exact same necklace. And that person, she said, will be my true love,” I say, laughing at myself, as she continued to play with the charm.
“Do you believe in it?” She asked, her eyes still glued on the charm.
“What? True love? Or the necklace?” I ask her, propping myself on one arm, as I gazed down at Destiny.
“Both.” She says looking up at me.
“No, and no,” I say. I was about to say something else but immediately decided against it.
“But?” She asked me, clearly knowing that there was more to the sentence.
“Uhm, I don’t know. I never really told this to anyone.”
“So? Doesn’t mean you can’t tell me. I mean how many people actually asked?”
“You’re right. Uhm. Well, I want to have faith in it, the necklace. I’d like to believe sometimes, that one day, that very special girl will come into my life and change everything.”
“Yeah?” She questioned me, with a slight smile.
“Yeah.” I nodded, returning the small smile. “Why are you so fond of it, anyway?”
“Oh, uhm. I don’t know. It just caught my eyes. It’s adorable.” She quickly says.
“Thank you.” I smiled, as I looked down to my necklace, wondering what fascination she had towards it, which was following by a few moments of silence. Destiny and I lay on my bed, with a large gap separating the two of us. I watched her eyes, as they became droopy, shutting and opening, repeatedly, until they finally closed and Destiny had fallen into a light nap.
I caught myself gazing at Destiny as she slept. Her hair falling across her face, I, gently, brushed it off to reveal her beautiful face.
As I watched her, I noticed something golden around her neck and tucked into my sweater. Curiosity took me over, compelling me to want to see the chain around her neck. Carefully remove it from inside my sweater, I took it out. Holding the charm at the end of the necklace, I realised that it was the exact same aeroplane necklace I had on.
‘What the-!’ I thought to myself, examining Destiny’s charm, next to my own, ‘It’s the same thing. How? Wait. Does that mean she is the one? What? Good Lord, I’m so stupid. Shut up, Harry. True love doesn’t exist. You’re going to end up sleeping with this girl some day soon and then leave her.’
Just then I heard footsteps coming up the stairwell. Not wanting anyone to know that I had been watching Destiny sleep, I pretend to be asleep as well.
I began to hear whispered footsteps around my bed, wondering what was happening, I was startled by loud, scattered screams.
“ARGH!” Destiny and I cried, shooting up from the bed, realising that our friends had come into my room to fetch us, but decided to scare us instead. The scattered screams with now replaced with howls of laughter.
“What the heck, guys!” I exclaimed, rubbing my eyes.
“Oh, my goodness. I just had a mini heart attack. Remind me to NEVER sleep when you loons are around.” Destiny muttered, throwing her hair behind her shoulders, as she got off the bed.
“Come on. We are going to play some more games, downstairs.” Niall says to us, laughing at our terrified faces.
The flash back hit me like a hurricane. Everything’s so different now. I sit in the pit that has become my world, guilt, despair and heartache rushed backed to me, as I pictured my necklace around my neck and Destiny touched hers.

She was supposed to be the one. She was supposed to be here with me, forever. She was supposed to be my one true love.

“Oh,” was the only word that escaped Destiny’s lips. She was about to say something else before she decided against it and went with, “I’ll see you later, Bella.”

“Okay. Bye, Destiny!” Bella waved at her happily. Destiny gave her a small smile and left.

With a sigh, I ran my hands through my hair as I tried to not make a scene.
