The Night I Met Harry

Secrets Kept.

I opened the door a little reluctant of what was soon to follow. I removed my keys closing it quietly as I entered. It was quiet with the exception of ticking from the large clock that furnished the hallway. I locked the door behind me, touching the roots of my hair nervously.
I laid my keys on the counter, letting my bag hit the floor with a thud. I had stopped by Cate’s house before coming home so she knew what I’d been up to. I never thought I’d be this girl… But honestly, Harry just made things different. The arrangements between us were inorganic but nothing felt wrong when I was with him. I walked slowly up the stairs, my heart beating for every step. Our house held five bedrooms including ours… Scott wanted a soccer team, and I never argued with him. I walked down the long hallway; stopping slightly before I reached the room he and I shared together. I walked in, his eyes meeting mine as he lay stretched across the bed muting the TV.
Scott:
“Hey, Sweetheart.”
Guilt swam in the pit of my stomach. It was always hard to distinguish my feelings from the two guys in my life. I cleared my throat quickly.
Winter:
“Hey. How’d your day go?”
Conversation was always easy between us, he’d sat up now giving me his full attention.
Scott:
“Good. Went over Eli’s place today, it went kind of long with the game and all. How was it for you?”
I listened as I kicked my shoes off, now removing my jacket as he spoke.
Winter:
“It was good. Seeing my friend’s regularly again is nice. It’s just like it was, you know.”
He got up from the bed, and began walking toward me. I fingered my hair from my face in routine.
Scott:
“Yea, I think it’s great you’re talking to them again. It’s always just us, and I don’t want to smother you.”
I felt comfort at his words. He was hugging me now, my arms lie on his shoulders. He leaned in, kissing my lips tenderly his hands planted around my waist. His touch felt nice, really… It just wasn’t his. My chest was planted firmly to his, I notice a discomfort as they were sore. I glanced over the calendar on my side of the room as I slowly removed myself from our embrace. If I was right, I’d probably have my period by the end of next week. I pondered this, as he continued our conversation.
Scott:
“I ran you a bath when you texted you were on your way. I knew you weren’t feeling well earlier…”
It was incredibly thoughtful. I definitely could use some relaxing time right now. My green eyes met his blue as I spoke.
Winter:
“Thanks, babe. You didn’t have to.”
He walked over to the door, stopping to lean on the doorframe.
Scott:
“Go. And I’ll make you a tea, yea? I’ll be back.”
He was absent from the doorframe as I closed my eyes, taking the moment to regroup. I began to undress taking a deep breath before grabbing my towels from the closet and making my way to the bathroom. Our bathroom was quite big, echoing with every sound. I lay my Blackberry on the rug in front of the tub, releasing the fabric concealing me and stepping in. The water was really warm stopping just below my collarbones. The contact with my skin was implausible, causing my muscles to immediately relax. I had the felling Scott had missed me today. He’d always had a way of showing it in these ways when he longed for my company. I mentally evaluated this as my phone began to vibrate against the rug below me. Of course it was Harry. He really did pick the worst times to call, though I was grateful I’d always been alone. I removed my hands from the water, wiping them on the towel before answering the call.
Winter:
“Hey.”
I held the phone a few inches from my ear, in fear of getting it wet. There was a pause before he spoke.
Harry:
“I miss you already.”
It was sweet. Our relationship was really hard to define, yet he knew my situation. I tried to conceal my humor.
Harry:
“Is he around?”
The question was becoming normal.
Winter:
“No, I’m in the bath. He’s downstairs.”
There was a silence. I closed my eyes to realm in his unsteady breathing.
Winter:
“I’ll call you after work Monday, okay.
He didn’t answer. I could tell he was irritated again, but how did he think I felt. Not being able to comprehend my thoughts or feelings. I was the only one that didn’t have it together.
Winter:
“Okay, Harry?”
There was a sigh before his voice sounded.
Harry:
“Promise me.”
The pain in his voice gave a heaviness to my heart. I swallowed hard, my throat becoming increasingly dry now. His mental state seemed to hold the same fear I had of losing him. Of waking up to find he’d never existed. And I understood his reasoning.
Winter:
“I promise.”
