Tutor Girl

F O U R

Louis was out of school the next Friday and gone all weekend with his family. But he insisted Lux come over that Sunday evening after he got back so they could go over some things for the trig quiz that Mr. Dixon was giving them on Monday.
Lux felt awkward going to Louis’ house after the weeks of them studying at hers. Her stomach was slightly uneasy as she knocked on his front door for their tutoring session. She was greeted by a beautiful brunette, who could only have been Louis’ mother. He looked exactly like her.
“Hello,” she said with an obvious British accent and expectant smile on her face.
“Uh, is… is Louis home?” Lux stammered, feeling slightly awkward.
“Are you… does Louis have a new girlfriend?” She asked as confusion washed over her features.
“Oh… no. Uh, I’m his tutor,” Lux told her. She almost wanted to laugh out loud at how absurd that sounded. Her and Louis dating would be like trying to mix oil and water.
“Oh! Well, aren’t you a pretty little thing,” the woman said, smiling brightly at Lux, causing her cheeks to blush almost immediately.
“Um… thanks,” Lux said, feeling slightly uncomfortable. But then again, she always felt uncomfortable whenever someone complimented her.
“It’s awfully nice of you to come over on a Sunday evening to help him out,” his mother told her.
“Uh… yeah. It’s no problem, really,” Lux stammered, wishing she would just point the way to Louis so they could be done with their small talk.
“We’ll I sure appreciate it, and I hope Louis does as well,” she said, finally stepping aside to let Lux into the house.
“Uh, Louis should be in his room,” she said, pointing toward the staircase.
“I uh… where is his room?” Lux asked, feeling embarrassed.
“You really aren’t his new girlfriend, huh?” She chuckled, walking with her toward the stairs.
“No. I can assure you I am not,” Lux told her, trying to brush off the overwhelming feeling inside of her.
“His room is up the stairs, second door on the left,” she directed Lux with one last smile.
“Thank you,” Lux said and headed up the staircase.
It didn’t exactly sit right with her that she was headed up to Louis’ room, but she wasn’t going to argue. Causing a scene was never her forte.
When Lux got to the second level, she could hear music coming from the slightly ajar door she now knew to be Louis’ room. It wasn’t recorded music, it was an acoustic guitar. Getting closer to the door, she realized there was also someone singing. Whether or not it was Louis, she did not know, but it was actually pretty good.
I’ve tried playing it cool, but when I’m looking at you I can’t ever be brave because you make my heart race.”
Peeking her head in the door, Lux saw that it was Louis and she almost couldn’t believe her ears. He really had a great voice.
“Damn it—that’s stupid. Stupid,” Lux heard him scoff to himself. Was he writing the song? Like right now?
Lux figured it was as good a time as any to make her presence known. She didn’t want to disrupt him while he was singing, and she didn’t want to pry in on his private business. With the quietest of knocks, she pushed the door open.
“Oh, hey,” Louis said as a smile graced his lips, but he let it fade soon after.
“Hi,” Lux said, pulling her backpack closer to herself, feeling extremely awkward. Louis set his guitar down against his dresser.
“I-I didn’t know you played… music,” Lux said, looking down at the notebook in front of him on the bed. He quickly looked down, flipping the notebook shut. He definitely was writing something in that notebook.
“Yeah. Uh, I like it,” he said awkwardly.
“You have a good voice,” Lux said, rocking back and forth on the balls of her heels.
“Thanks,” he said, bending over his bed to grab his backpack from the floor.
He was only wearing a slim white v-neck and pair of low hanging gray sweat pants. It was the most intimate Lux had ever seen him and she didn’t know how I felt about that, so she looked around his room instead of at him. He had artwork and posters of his favorite bands displayed on his walls, and there were countless soccer trophies that lined his shelves. He had to have been playing for a long time.
“You really do like soccer,” Lux quipped, smirking over at him.
“Yeah,” he said, pulling out his textbook.
Lux stood awkwardly in the middle of his room, unsure of where to situate herself. The study location was really making her uncomfortable.
“You can sit down, you know,” Louis said, looking up at her through his long eyelashes. She hesitated before he nodded his head toward the chair at his desk. Lux sat down and pulled out her own trig book.
“So, your mom is really nice,” she pointed out.
“Of course she’s nice. She’s one of the nicest people in the world,” Louis said with a hint of bitterness in his tone.
“But you don’t like her?” Lux questioned, narrowing her eyes at him.
“It’s not that. It’s just, she’s also one of the most oblivious people in the world,” he said with a sigh.
“What do you mean?” Lux asked, rather curious as to what he meant. He was being cryptic and confusing.
“She has five children, but you wouldn’t know it with the way she fawns all over her daughters,” Louis said, rolling his eyes.
“She loves them,” Lux defended, unaware of why she was defending her. Her first impression of his mother must have been a strong one. She seemed so normal and happy.
“Well, where was she when I went to the State Championship with the soccer team last year? She was at dance rehearsals with Lottie – like, she didn’t even need to be there. And she didn’t even bother to call to congratulate me when we won. Lottie could take a shit and she’d be there front and center,” Louis said with a scoff.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.
“Sometimes I just wished she would pull her head out of her ass,” Louis scoffed. Lux nodded, but she couldn’t be sure he saw since she couldn’t bring herself to look up to see the disappointment in his eyes.
She silently wondered which was worse – not having a mother at all or having a mother that was never there for you.
After a brief moment of weighted silence, Louis cracked open his book, lightening the mood only slightly. They started studying straight away, which Lux was grateful for. Because she didn’t know how much more real conversation she could handle. It didn’t bother her that he opened up, it just made her almost uncomfortable, because they weren’t supposed to be confidants. This was strictly for educational purposes, and it scared her a little because she could visibly see the lines starting to blur between them.
Louis was really beginning to get the hang of the math problems, which was truly rewarding for Lux. After getting a series of questions correctly, he quickly pulled himself off of the bed.
“Want something to drink?” He asked, looking over at Lux.
“Uh, sure,” she said, watching him skeptically.
“Water? Soda? Juice? What?” He asked, waiting for her order.
“I’ll, uh… water’s fine,” she told him, trying to break her eyes away from him as he stretched his arms up over his head and his shirt rode up revealing a small patch of skin on his belly. She tried to deny the attraction she felt, but it wasn’t easy lying to herself.
“Mmkay,” he said and took off out of the room.
Lux couldn’t help but let her eyes wander around the room, trying to get her head back into the right frame of mind. But she was in a boy’s room. She had never been in a boy’s room before, as pathetic as that sounded. Well, she had never been in a straight boy’s room before. Her gay best friend’s room didn’t really count.
A sudden rush of anticipation ran through her. She had no idea what she was anticipating, but she couldn’t help the butterflies that swarmed her stomach the moment Louis walked back in the room carrying two bottles of water.
“Catch,” he said, tossing her one of them.
Awkward Lux let it fall to the ground as she flailed her arms out helplessly trying to catch it. Louis chuckled at her awkward display as he flopped back down on his bed.
“You are a terrible catcher,” he chuckled, shaking his head lightly.
“Maybe that’s why I don’t play sports,” Lux retorted as she bent down, picking up the battered water bottle.
“Maybe,” he said, continuing to snicker to himself.
Lux took a sip of the water to make the moment less awkward for herself, but seeing Louis looking at her from the corner of her eye just pulled her right back into the damning moment.
“Why don’t you like soccer?” He asked seriously once she caught his eye.
“Why do you like soccer?” Lux asked, quirking her eyebrow at him.
“Why do you always answer my question with a question?” He retorted, heightening both of his eyebrows at her.
She didn’t answer – because she had nothing to say. She just pursed her lips together, looking down at her text book.
“I try to talk to you, but you always just blow me off,” Louis said, catching her totally off guard. Her head snapped up to look at him, her eyes wide and questioning.
“Why do you want to talk to me?” Lux asked, nearly choked on the words.
“There you go again. Always questioning,” he pointed out.
“That’s who I am. I’m skeptical… of everyone and everything,” she told him honestly.
“That makes it hard to get to know you,” he said with a small sigh, and it made the butterflies in her stomach worsen.
Lux froze, her eyes locked on his. She probably looked like an idiot. Her eyes were a bit wider than normal – a perfect deer in the headlights look.
“What?” He asked, knitting his eyebrows in question.
“Wh-why would you want to get to know me?” Lux stammered, feeling like all the thoughts in her brain were spiraling in that moment.
“Why not?” He shrugged nonchalantly.
“Because you hate me,” she stated firmly.
“I don’t… why would I hate you?” He asked, looking at her like it was the most ridiculous thing he ever heard.
Lux stared at him longer than she should have allowed herself to before she tore her eyes away to look down at her textbook.
“Question sixteen. Wha-what did you get?” Lux asked, stammering once again. She felt super uncomfortable at the turn in conversation, so she just chose to ignore it. Louis obliged her sudden change of subject and fed her off his answer.
“No, no. Try again,” she said, shaking her head slightly.
“I don’t get that one,” he said, scratching his head.
“Try it again. Work it out,” she told him, trying her best to help him rather than just doing it for him.
He looked down at his notebook and it really seemed like he was concentrating hard, but then he scoffed and threw the notebook down on the bed.
“I don’t get it,” he told her firmly.
“Just try,” Lux said patiently.
“I did try,” Louis said through an aggravated whine.
“How hard?” Lux asked, eyeing him skeptically.
“Can you just help me?” He asked as his eyes softened, blinking his dangerously long eyelashes at her.
“Louis…” Lux said, trying to make it sound like a warning, yet it came out almost breathless, and it made her cheeks blush instantly.
“Just… come on. I don’t get it. Help me,” he said, almost pouting.
“How is doing your work for you ‘helping’?” Lux asked, cocking her eyebrow at him.
“You wouldn’t be doing my work for me. I just don’t get it, okay. Just please come over here and help me,” he said, moving over to make room for her on the bed.
Her stomach clenched. He wanted her to sit with him on the bed? Was she like, in an alternate universe? Was this really happening? Being in a boy’s room and sitting on his bed? All in one day?
“Uh…” She stammered as she naturally hesitated.
“Please. Just help me,” he whined, sounding so exposed and helpless that she knew she wouldn’t deny him.
Lux stood up from the chair and moved toward the bed as a smile invaded Louis’ face.
“I’ll help, but you’re doing all the work on your own,” she told him sternly.
“I promise,” he said, smiling up at her.
Awkward didn’t come close to describing the feelings that were working through Lux’s body as she sat down next to him on his bed and began helping him along with the math problem. She figured Louis could tell how weird she felt because after a few moments, he looked over at her and snickered to himself. She could only take a deep breath and shake her head at him.
By the times they rounded the end of the fifty practice questions Mr. Dixon assigned for the quiz, Lux was feeling more at ease and let herself sit back against Louis’ headboard, taking in a cleansing deep breath and letting it out forcefully.
“I’m glad we’re done with that,” Louis quipped as he too leaned backwards.
“Me too. For a while there, I didn’t think we were going to get through it,” she told him with a smirk.
“Hey!” Louis laughed and it made Lux giggle.
“That wasn’t a dig toward you. I promise,” she told him as she turned her head to look over at him.
“Good,” he said, smiling back. Lux let my vision cut away from his, realizing it was awkward enough just sitting next to him in his bed. She didn’t need eye contact to add to it.
“Thanks for dumbing it all down for me. I know I’m completely clueless sometimes,” Louis told her.
“Trig is a hard subject. I can completely understand why you don’t understand half of this stuff. Math has just always come easy to me. It’s fun,” Lux said, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly.
“Math is most definitely not fun,” Louis scoffed.
“To each his own,” she told him as she leaned forward to shut her book before she leaned back again.
“Hmm,” he let out a laugh under his breath.
Lux could feel his eyes on her, and she didn’t know what to do. She didn’t want to look at him. She didn’t want him to know she knew he was looking. But she didn’t want to sit there squirming under his gaze either.
“What?” She asked, looking at him from the corner of her eye.
“Nothing,” he said, still looking, but making it less obvious.
“You’re… staring at me,” she pointed out.
When he didn’t answer, Lux looked him dead in the face as she furrowed her brow. He chuckled uncomfortably, which immediately made her laugh. Everything was totally weird.
“Lux?” He asked quietly.
“What?” She asked, looking over at him tentatively.
There were no words that came out of his mouth after she answered him – just a smile spread across it.
What?” She asked impatiently.
Seconds later, his lips crashed into hers and she felt his hand snake up, grasping gently onto the back of her neck.
Holy shit.
Lux’s hands came up, pushing against his chest and he immediately backed up, looking away sheepishly.
“What are you doing?” She asked incredulously.
“Uh… I don’t know,” he said hesitantly.
“You kissed me!” She pointed out through her disbelief.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
“Why would you kiss me?” She asked as her heart beat in her throat.
“Because I wanted to,” he said with a shrug, shying his eyes away.
Lux was speechless. He wanted to kiss her? What was going on? No one in the history of history wanted to kiss her. And the fact that Louis did really threw her for a loop. She couldn’t wrap her head around it.
When she looked back up at Louis, he was looking at her again. What the hell was going on in this alternate reality?
“Are you going to freak out if I kiss you again?” He asked cautiously.
What?” Lux choked out.
“Is that a ‘yes’?” He chuckled as a sneaking smile tugged up the sides of his lips. His blue eyes were playful and it made her heart nearly skip a beat. This boy wanted to kiss her.
Lux’s eyes widened, but she didn’t answer. She wanted him to kiss her again – she really did. It just scared the hell out of her in so many ways. First, being the fact that just a few minutes before, she just experienced her very first kiss. And second, her first kiss was with Louis Tomlinson. Fucking Louis Tomlinson. What was going on?
When Louis leaned in again, Lux’s breathing hitched and then she stopped breathing all together, anticipating the moment when her lips met his again.
“Is this okay?” He breathed against her mouth.
“Mm-hmm,” she whimpered.
Louis smiled slightly before his lips moved against hers again. Oh, god. Cue the imaginary fireworks.
His lips moved softly against hers, the kiss getting fuller and deeper as the moment progressed. Lux’s heart was beating so fast and it was so hard to concentrate on anything else but his lips on hers that she just held her breath instead of remembering to breathe.
“Kiss me back,” he whispered against her lips.
Oh shit. Yeah. She was so busy analyzing the moment that she forgot she needed to also partake in it. She quickly mimicked Louis’ movements, hoping she was doing it right. And it was good. It was really good.
Louis’ hand came up, tangling in her hair, making her go a little crazy. It was all making her go crazy. Louis’ lips and fingers and the way his nose mashed with hers.
When she felt his tongue prod slightly against her lips, she freaked out internally. He wanted to kiss – like really kiss. And before she knew it, he was coaxing her down on her back on his bed. The excitement washed over her and she found herself opening up to him. Her body relaxed and she allowed his tongue access so they were full-blown making out in a heap on his bed. And it was good. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.
“Louis—” They heard.
Their bodies instantaneously split apart, knowing they were shamefully caught in the act.
“Ew! Ohmygod,” the girl at the door scoffed before slamming Louis’ bedroom door.
“Lottie,” Louis mumbled under his breath as he ran his fingers through his hair.
“Uh, I should… I should go,” Lux said, pulling herself up from the bed quickly.
“No, don’t,” he told her as he watched her collect all of her belongings and shove them rather ungracefully into her backpack.
“I’ve-I’ve gotta get home,” Lux said, unable to even look in his direction.
“Lux…” He sighed, running his fingers through his hair again.
“I’ll uh, see you at school tomorrow,” she told him, still not making eye contact as she moved toward his door.
“Uh, yeah. See ya,” Louis said awkwardly as she slipped out of his room.
Lux snuck out of his house undetected, taking in a deep breath as she reached the outdoors.
What in the hell was she doing?
