It's A Matter Of Time
She already pulled the trigger....
I squeeze my eyes shut, ready for the pain.
After a few moments I still don't feel anything and open my eyes.
I see Ashton's back and begin to realise what happened.
He jumped in front of me.
"Ashton!" I yell in panic as I run to the front of him and see a red stain beginning to cover the right side of his shirt.
He doesn't say anything and falls onto the ground.
"Call an ambulance!" I yell to Ashley while I kneel down onto my knees next to Ashton.
I hear the sound of the gun falling to the ground and hear Hunter running away.
I don't pay much attention to it and focus on Ashton
"Ashton? Do you hear me? It's going to be okay. You're going to be fine. The ambulance will be here soon."
"Ssshh." He puts his fingers over my lips.
"It's okay." He smiles.
"Fucking don't talk like that! I'm not going to loose you! Not again!"
"It's okay." He repeats.
"No it's not! Can't you see?! I'm not giving up on you and you aren't giving up either!"
"Sierra.. It's fine.. I'm.. Happy.."
"You're talking fucking nonsense! Don't talk like I'm gonna loose you because I'm not! You're going to fight for you damn life, do you hear me?!" Tears stream down my face.
"Yes ma'am." He smiles and closes his eyes.
"Ashton! Don't you dare to go to sleep! You're staying awake with me! You're staying with me!
He opens his eyes again and I can hear the ambulance coming.
Suddenly the door gets thrown open and two men take me away from Ashton.
"No Wait! I'm staying with him!" I yell as I try to struggle free.
"Miss, don't worry. You can come with us in the ambulance but we'll need to get him in there first." One of them says.
I stop and nod my head.
I see how they carefully take him with them to the ambulance. I follow them and get into the ambulance too.
"We're right behind you!" I hear Ashley yell.
I nod my head before the two men close the doors.
The ride to the hospital took way too long, even it was just a few miles away. It took too long.
Ashton blacked out, which only worried me more.
The doctor said it was good, because his body could focus more on the wound.
"Are you family?" One of the men asks me.
"No.." I mumble.
"Girlfriend?"
I lift my shoulders.
"I don't really know.. He was breaking up with his ex when he got shot."
The man nods his head and talks to the other.
I sigh and look at Ashton.
You better be okay...
When we arrive I get out.
I see how Ashton disappears and walk quickly after them.
"Sorry ma'am, but you'll need to wait here." The man says when we pass the waiting room.
I sigh and nod my head. I turn around and sit down in a chair.
After a few minutes passed Madison and Ashley walk in.
When they see me they hug me.
"It's going to be okay." Ashley whispers and I feel tears coming up.
"Yeah, he's going to be fine." Madison smiles.
"How do you know?" I mumble.
"Because now he has something to fight for." Madison says simply.
I sigh.
"Sierra, you did what you could. The only this that you can do now is wait."
I nod my head and sit back down.
We can only wait..
Hours pass but no information.
We see people walk in and out, doctors and nurses running around.
"How long can it take?" I ask.
Ashley and Madison lift there shoulders.
"It will be okay." Madison smiles.
I roll my eyes. That's the 17th time she said that today.
Suddenly I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"Ms. Conewell?" I hear.
I stand up and turn around.
I see a doctor with a clipboard in his hands.
"Yes?" I ask.
"Mr. Irwin just came out of surgery. The bullet is removed successfully and he's stable. The bullet didn't reach any important organs. It's now waiting until he wakes up." The doctor frowns.
"And then?"
"Then we'll need to hope that the recovery goes without any problems. The wound is on a very bacteria sensitive place.. If the wound gets infected.. then it might be over..."
I nod my head.
"So technically he could still die?" I ask
The doctor nods his head slowly.
"It depends of course if the wound gets infected and by which bacteria.. Some are easy to treat, others..." He sighs.
"But the chance is very small since we keep the hospital as clean as possible. But miss.. Please, when you're allowed to visit him.. Clean you hands before.. The bacteria on your hand might be not harming you but it could harm him."
I nod my head again and he does the same.
"I'll come back as soon as he wakes up. That could be minutes, but also hours... It's your choice if you're staying here." He says.
"I am." I nod.
I turn to the others and they nod too.
"We're going to stay with you."
"Very well, I will come back when-" he gets cut off by a nurse who whispers something in his ear.
"Well, it seems like Mr. Irwin already woke up.. Surprisingly. I thought that it would take a little longer with the dose we gave him... Anyway.. He asked for someone named Sierra...?" He gives me a questioning look.
"Yeah, that's me."
"I'm sorry, on my clipboard only stands your last name.. Well Sierra.. You can go if you want to.. The chance is that he will fall asleep very soon.. But it's your choice."
"I'll go.." I say.
"Very well. Follow me." He takes me with him to Ashton's room.
As told, I wash my hands before walking in.
I carefully open the door and quietly walk in.
I sit down in a chair next to his bed and see that he already fell asleep.
I smile softly to myself and look at his peaceful face. When I decide to let him sleep I grab my phone for some distraction.
"Sierra?" His cracks voice comes to me and I look up.
I immediately put my phone away and smile.
"Hey Ash, are you feeling better?" I know it's a stupid question. I mean, he just got shot, but yeah, he feels amazing and wants to run 5 marathons and develop magical DNA that can create unicorns. I internally roll my eyes at my sled.
"I'm doing fine." He smiles.
"'Fine'?"
"Yes, I'm happy.. I'm feeling.. I'm feeling.." He coughs a few times and I hand him a glass of water.
After he took a few sips he goes on.
"I'm feeling happy.. With you here." He takes my hand and laces our fingers.
"Ashton.. You just got shot.. And all because of me!" I sigh and look down.
"No Sierra, it was my own choice, besides now we're even... You got shot for me, I got shot for you."
"You're talking about my crazy mum?"
He nods his head.
"She was one crazy woman." He sighs and I nod my head.
"Maybe it's better if you get some sleep." I say as I stand up.
"But I'm not sleepy at all!"
"Sleep." I point my finger at him.
"Okay, but then stay with me."
"Ashton.."
"I'm not going to sleep unless you stay here with me."
"I can't.."
"Please don't leave me alone."
I sigh.
"Fine. I'll stay." I sit back and he takes my hand again.
"Goodnight Sierra."
"Goodnight Ash." Even if it is only 6pm now.
I feel how my eyelids close each time, even though I try to keep them open.
You can't fall asleep now.. You gotta stay awake.. For Ashton...
And I fell asleep.
I wake up from Ashton's mumbling.
"Hm?" I groan and lift up my head that I laid on his bed.
He chuckles when he sees my face.
"You look beautiful." He smirks.
"I see you're feeling better." I smirk back.
He nods his head.
"Good morning." The nurse comes in and I smile at her.
"You know, you're not supposed to be here. Only at visiting hours.." She smiles.
I sigh and nod my head.
"But.." She goes on.
"I kind of filled in that your his wife, instead of his girlfriend." She smirks.
"Thank you." I smile back.
She checks Ashton and leaves again.
"So... What do you want for Christmas?" He asks.
"I don't need anything for Christmas.. Besides you'll probably be here when it's Christmas."
He nods his head and sighs.
"Guess we don't celebrate it then.." He mumbles.
"I'm not saying that..."
"I know what you're going to say.. But no, I don't want you to stay here for Christmas. Just go and party with Madison and Ashley.. I'll be fine." He smiles.
I sigh and nod my head.
"Alright then.." I say.
Yeah, no way I'm not going to be with him on Christmas Eve....
