We Took A Chance

When we went back inside, it turned out that Leah's cousin Niall had left. It made me feel much more at ease. I don't think I'd be able to look into his eyes if we encountered each other again.

For the rest of the evening, Leah and I mostly spent it plopped down on the couch messing with our phones. Then I remembered her cousin Niall and I became curious.

"So, how long is your Irish family staying?" I ask, hoping to sound casual.
"Uhmm... Probably a couple more days. They all have jobs back there that they need to attend." She answers never leaving her eyes from her phone.
"Oh... And what about... Niall?" when I ask that she turns to me with a huge smile and says,
"You slut! You like Niall?!" she teases.
"What? No! I'm just curious about how it works. You know with being famous and all." I focus my eyes on my phone before they reveal too much about my reasoning behind the question.
"Yeah, okay.. Well, for starters he doesn't live in Ireland. He lives in England, London to be precise. And right now the band is currently on a break so he doesn't have band things to attend. I don't know when he's leaving honestly. Which reminds me, I should ask him to hook me up with his bandmate Liam. So fucking hot." she sighs with a smile on her face then returns to her phone. I decide to not ask anymore questions in fear of more teasing from Leah.

Back in my apartment, I remember that I had a text from my mom. I decide to text her back to get it over with.

Zoe: Sorry, my phone died. What did dad do?
Mom: Oh, Zoe, he had the audacity to to tell me he is seeing someone new!

When I read that, my heart fell to the pit of my stomach. Not only are my parents divorced but my dad has moved on to someone else? How can he do this? They were supposed to love each other forever.

Zoe: Wow, wasn't expecting that.
Mom: Exactly. I wonder who the hussy is.
Zoe: I have to go to bed. Class early tomorrow. Night.

Of course I didn't have classes on Sunday, but I refused to talk about the subject any longer. I didn't like this feeling whatsoever. I could feel my stomach get sick just from the thought. I felt bad for my mom, it must not be easy to know my dad is with someone else. I remember when Andrew started dating his current girlfriend. I can't say I'm not bitter for him moving on so soon after our breakup. When I saw them holding hands, the blood drained from my face. I felt betrayed even though I knew that at that point I was no one to him.
All these thoughts really put a damper on my mood and now all I wanted was to go to bed. It has been two days of too much socializing.

Sundays are always my days to sleep in and then do nothing. I woke up to a text from Leah.

Leah: Please tell me you'll come to Sunday brunch?

It was sent at 8 and it was now 12.

Zoe: Sorry, I was asleep.
Leah: You suck! The food was delicious, though!
Zoe: Maybe next time. :)
Leah: Niall asked if you were coming.
Zoe: Oh? He was probably making sure the awkward chick from yesterday wasn't going to show up. lol
Leah: Yeah surely that was it. ;)

I drop my phone on the bed and proceed to the bathroom to do my morning routine. When I'm eating my breakfast, I grab my phone and check my email. I'm surprised to see an email from my adviser. I go through all the possible reasons why she'd contact me in my head. Surely my grades hadn't dropped too bad, at least not enough to get contacted by my adviser. I open the email and widen my eyes at the content.

Ms. Allen,
It is with great delight that I announce to you of a program abroad that will greatly fit your studies. Please come to my office tomorrow during lunch to further discuss this opportunity. I can assure you this is the opportunity of a lifetime. I look forward to seeing you.
