Incidental

The music is loud and Blair has already found people she knows. I tip toe pass people, finding an empty space. I take a deep breath as a drink is handed to me.

"Ease up!" Blair laughs.
"What is this?" I question, sniffing the strong scented liquid.
"Vodka! The mixers are over there!" She points.

I instantly gain the counter, grabbing a can of pineapple juice before emptying its contents into my cup.
"Told you Nolan would be here." Blair nudges.
I follow the path of her eyes spotting the buff baseball player. His jeans fit perfectly and his button down is primed with sleeves rolled. I nearly drop my cup gazing at the piece of art that he is.
"Go talk to him!" She continues to nudge.
"I can't, Blair." I whine. "He doesn't even know me!"
"Well, let him get to know you." "I don't know."
"Well, you better know quick because he is heading this way."
"What? Oh god. I'm not--"
"Hey, aren't you the new transfer?" I hear Nolan's voice bellow.
"Yes she is." Blair answers.
Nolan laughs, taking a swig of his beer.
"Sam." I smile.
"Nolan, but by the way you are blushing, I'm guessing you already know that."
"I had a good idea." I awkwardly laugh.
He nods. "So, where did you transfer from?"
"A small college outside town. It just wasn't for me."
He nods again. "Glad you thought this university was."
We share a laugh as a large group of rowdy frat boys pass through.
"Well, nice meeting you Sam. See you around."
"Yeah, you too." I smile, giving him a small wave.

I watch Nolan gravitate to a group of blonde haired chatty girls. They all swoon over his presence, instantly making him the center of attention. I turn around to find Blair is no where in sight.
"Great." I mumble. "Just blend in." I sigh walking towards the deck in the back half of the house. The brisk night air hits my skin as I venture out of the bass heavy music and into the almost calming laughter of frat beer pong. I take another sip of my drink, scanning the area for any kind of familiar face from my classes. No luck.

"I just wanted to say, I really like your outfit." A random girl giggles. I'm unsure how to answer, so I give her a bland 'thank you' before heading down the steps of the deck and onto a beaten path.
"I knew I should have worn sandals." I curse myself as I ditch my heels. The further I walk down the path, the quieter and pleasant it becomes. But all things are not want they seem as a strong odor of marijuana fills my nose. I take this as a cue to turn around, and spin on my heels. A familiar laugh stumbles out in front of me as I hide quietly beside some brush. A long blonde haired beauty hangs on his arm as they both continue to laugh about something. Conversation inaudible to me is carried between them before a passionate kiss is shared. He keeps his lips close to her ear as she giggles away. I roll my eyes knowing he is probably the cheesiest person when it comes to sappy stuff like that. I lean back against a tree wishing the two love birds would carry on down the path already, so I could get back to the party to find Blair. I peer back out seeing to much relief that they have finally started to move. I release myself from the brush and hurry back up the dirt path.

"There you are!" Blair screeches. "What the hell were you doing back there?"
"I had to get away from the music and chaos. I didn't realize that's where you go to smoke weed and have sex with people."
Blair laughs. "You have a lot to learn."
"Clearly." I snark rolling my eyes. I put my heels back on, follow Blair back into the house. I spot Harry instantly, being loud and the life of the party, blonde still wrapped up in his limbs. "Blair, who is the blonde all over uh--"
"Harry?" She asks. "That's his um, on and off girlfriend situation. Holly Wagner."
"Oh." I nod.
"Do you know Harry?"
"He's in my History class and showed me how to get two bottles of water from the vending machine."
She laughs. "Such an old trick." Amongst our chatter, we fail to realize that we gained company.
"Hey girls." A sweaty frat boy slurs. "Wanna go smoke a joint?"
"No thanks, hoser." Blair snipes. "Come on, Sam."

I cover my mouth to contain my laughter as we walk away from the insulted gasps and huffs of the boys.
"You are too much." I laugh.
"Those guys are the worst. I'm sure they'll find some freshman to pick on. Want another drink?"
"Yeah, why not?" I smile, snaking my arm around her's. We walk over to the kitchen, grabbing our drinks before wandering to the left side of the house. An intense poker game is taking place as Blair gives me a wide-eyed sarcastic look.

"Wonder what the pot is up too that everyone looks so serious?"
"I don't know, but this isn't my cup of tea." I say with a hint of posh before taking a drink from my cup.
"Yeah, let's skip out." I agree and follow her out to the front of the house. The heat from the house and flush from the alcohol has my head slightly spinning as I invite in the cool air. "Sorry this party is turning out to be such a dud." Blair frowns.
"It's not, I'm having fun!" She laughs.
"Are you though, Sam?"
"Um, yes!" I sing. "We are hanging, aren't we?"
"Yeah." She smiles. "You're right and that's all that really matters."

Again that familiar laughter rings through the area, alerting us of Harry's presence.

"Hey, Sam? Right?" He slurs slightly.
"Yes. Hey Harry." I reply giving him a small wave.
"I didn't think parties would be your thing." He pokes.
"I came with Blair." I shrug.
"Hi." Blair peeps, giving him the hand.
"Hey." Harry replies before looking back to the house. The cigarette in his hand is nearly gone as he throws it down to the ground. "Well, see you around."
"See ya." I say quaintly as he leaves back to the house.
"What a weirdo." Blair huffs. "You ready?"
"Yeah." I sigh. "Let's go."

Harry's quick dismissal has, for whatever reason, left a sour taste in my mouth and that has me extremely annoyed.
