Incidental

Late

HARRY

I awake with a bloody headache ringing throughout my brain. I squint my eyes, shielding them from the piercing sun. Doesn't surprise me that Cade left considering I got so pissing drunk I passed out before the first movie. I shuffle into the dirty, searching lazily for aspirin. "Fuck." I curse picking up the empty aspirin container. I sigh deeply and shuffle back into my room to fetch my phone. I send Cade a text begging for aspirin before collapsing back onto the bed.
"Styles?"
I startle out of my soft slumber instantly grabbing my head.
"Sorry." Cade whispers. "Here's your aspirins."
"Thanks mate. Where'd you wonder off to? Wait, never mind."
Cade laughs. "Yeah, I took a bit of advantage of my liquid courage."
"What do you mean?" I push, sitting up.
He smirks. "C'mon Harry, you already know."
"No I don't." I slightly laugh.
Cade flops down across the bed. "Sam and I, you know."
"You have such a prude mouth. But it's about time." I poke.
"Hey, I just wanted to make sure she was the right girl."
I roll my eyes. "It's not like you are going to marry her, so why not just have some fun?"
He looks at me with a keen look in his eye.
"Wait-" I pause. "You are that serious about her?"
"I--I think I'm in love." Cade confesses.
I find no words to say instead begin an unsettled laughter. Cade props himself up onto his elbows and stares me down.
"What?"
"Love, Cade? Really?"
"Yeah, I'm in love with Sam." He states again. "What's wrong with that?"
I shake my head. "Nothing."
"Just say it. Get it out of your system. Come on."
"I just --" I sigh. "Don't get yourself hurt, ok?"
Cade huffs out a laugh. "Yeah, ok Styles." He smiles.
"Good, now get out. My head is fucking killing me."
Cade puts his hands up before getting off the bed. He hurries out of the room without another word shutting the door behind him. I sigh deeply feeling that pit of jealous erupt within me again. But then I look at Cade and I look at Sam and it's weird to say they nearly fit each other. I shake my head and settle back down into the bed. I'm happy for Cade but I'm really not ready to lose my best mate.

Another month and a half strings along as Cade and I dig deep to actually get some good grades out of our classes. Sam has spent a lot more time at our place lately and I'm actually enjoying her company a little more than I thought. Cade sits back in his seat before pushing his books across the table.
"I can't take anymore of this note taking."
"Yeah, I'm out too. Want a beer?"
"Hell yeah." He nods.
I head off to the fridge and grab us two beers. We are both quick to down them, mindlessly bullshitting about dumb topics.

"Hey Styles."
"What is it Cade?" I answer, tapping my bottle.
But Cade doesn't answer, yet reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small black box. "Cade." I gasp. "You are my best mate but this is a bit far."
He laughs. "Not you, you douche bag. For Sam."
I know my face has to be dumbfounded. "I mean, if you are ready." I continue as he opens the box. "Holy shit."
Cade smiles. "Do you think she will like it?"
"I think she will cry and faint, so you might want to take that into consideration."
He nods closing the box. "I need your help though."
"Oh no."
"Come on Harry." He pleads. "All I need you to do is be apart of the plan."
I huff. "Fine. When is this happening?"
"Well classes are almost out and I spoke with her parents and well the only time--"
"When Cade?" I bark.
"This weekend." I give him wide eyes before rolling them.
"Fine, I'm in. But if I fuck up, you can't blame me because this is short notice."
Cade laughs. "Deal."

The next couple days turn out completely spastic. Cade worrying over Sam's parents being in town, Cade and I suddenly kicked out of our dorm and having to stay with Sam, partying galore, and I still don't know what I'm doing with this surprise engagement.

"Ok, so you and Sam will obviously be there first. I'm going to time it up with my Mom and her parents so that we arrive at the same time."
"She's going to know then, Cade." I sarcastically scoff.
"I have them sitting at a different table."
I shake my head. "This is crazy."
"I want it to be special."
"With me third-wheeling?" I poke.
"Shut up. You are going to have a "phone call" interrupt our lunch and you'll have to suddenly leave. Meanwhile, you will just go with her parents and my Mom."
"How will I know where they are sitting."
Cade growls. "I will tell you."
"Ok, ok." I laugh. "This will all work out."
Cade shakes his head, looking down at his watch. "Alright, I've got to go. An hour Harry, don't be late I swear."
"We won't! See you at the dock in an hour."

An hour later, and Sam and I are arriving at the dock. Of course she gets all dolled up for Cade and it couldn't be more appropriate for what is about to happen.

"Does Cade want us to wait for him?" She asks from behind her sunglasses.
"Um yeah, I think so." I pull my phone out and shoot him a text. And he was worried about us being late. I roll my eyes feeling a bit annoyed.

20 minutes tick by with no response from Cade. I spot his Mom and who I assume Sam's parents walking up from the parking lot.

"Mom? Dad?" Sam screeches. "What are you doing here?"

I step back from the family banter quickly dialing Cade but again, receive no answer.
"Harry."
"Hey Mrs. Branson." I smile.
"Where is Cade?" She side mouths.
"That's what I'm trying to figure out. Maybe he got cold feet."
She smacks me lightly.
I shrug, laughing quietly.
The faint sound of blaring sirens ring throughout the valley causing my stomach to turn for unknown reasons.
"Maybe he got hung up in traffic or something." She suggests. "Let's go get a table since Sam knows we are all here."

I nod following her into the restaurant. I try Cade again on his phone but am immediately sent to his voicemail. I bite the inside of my cheek before downing my glass of whiskey. We decide on appetizers, but the uneasy feeling my stomach is producing doesn't allow me to eat.

"Harry, eat something." Sam presses. "Cade will be here soon. Maybe he is stuck at work or something. Last minute things always pop up."
I nod. "Yeah, you are right."

But she wasn't and the uneasy feeling has now turned into 100 percent worry. Mrs. Branson's phone ringing loudly startles me out of my day-maring as I watch her answer the unknown number. I watch her struggle to hear the caller before her face pales and lip begins to tremble.
"Kate." I say sternly. "What's wrong?"
But she says nothing.
No instead, her eyes burst into tears as she begs us all to go.

Something is wrong, something is very wrong.
