Reminiscing Memories

Scared To Know

*Liam’s POV*

She was up to something, my mother. I saw it the moment Hazel and I agreed to stay the night because of the heavy rain. I didn’t say anything though. I just waited, curious about what my mother was wanting to do. It took a while though, all the way up until bedtime. I was walking to my room whilst my mother was still talking to Hazel. “Oh, and by the way, your father and I have been doing some renovating with Ruth and Nicole’s old room, so Hazel will be sharing your room with you.”

Yep, I knew it, but I wasn’t expecting her to go this far. I slightly gaped at her. “So,” She continued, looking at Hazel, “if you’d like a shower, I’ll bring you some clothes to borrow.”
Before Hazel could even make a comment, Mum was guiding her to the bathroom that was displayed upstairs and pushed her inside. Mum shut the door quickly, leaving Hazel in there to fend for herself. “Mum…” I started.

“Oh, seriously, Liam. You’re a grown man. I know a lot more than you think. Plus, there’s something I found earlier…”

I blinked, somehow her change of subject distracting me. She had a photo in hand. “It’s been so long since I’ve taken this photo that I’ve almost forgotten.”

I took it from her hand, looking at the photo. There was a little boy and girl. The boy I recognized as myself, but the girl…

I blinked again, feeling a rush of a memory in my mind. A girl crying by a tree. This was the same girl. “Doesn’t she look a lot like Hazel?” My mother asked. Yeah, actually, she did, but where the chances of her being the same girl. “Do you think…?” She continued.

I shook my head. “Impossible, Mum. She’s never mentioned before that she’s ever been to England.”

“She has amnesia, sweetheart.” I let my arms rest on my sides. I knew, but still. Her hand reached up to lightly place it against my cheek. “It could be possible. Just remember that. All she has to do is remember.”

She left me with the photo in hand. I stared at it as I walked to my bedroom, shutting the door behind me. The younger boy me had the biggest smile on his face, fighting through the pain that was constantly shooting through his side. His little arms were locked with the girl, whose smile was not as big as the boys, but present, pushing through whatever pain she was going through.
I looked up, my eyes meeting with my reflection through the window. I stared, my eyes focusing away from myself to the rain that was pouring outside in the dark night. I let the memory seep in of this girl. I remembered the first time I ever met her.

I didn’t remember much. I would always remember the pain I’d always had from the pain of having a malfunctioning kidney. All I remember is sneaking away from the hospital room I was staying in, because – it was either Mum or Dad – but they were asleep, so I didn’t get caught as quickly. I wasn’t sure where I was going, but I ended up outside, where it was dark, cold, and raining.

It was the gown the little girl was wearing that caught my attention. She was crouched by a tree, crying. I ran over to her, seeing that she was crying. I wasn’t sure if we talked or not, but we didn’t speak for long, since we were caught by staff.

“Liam?”

I flinched a little, more from shock, feeling Hazel touch my arm. She drew back, looking apologetic. “Sorry.” I said almost immediately. I looked back down at the photo. I could see her head crane a bit to look too. I gave it to her, seeing there was no use in holding anything back. “I was just thinking about this girl.”

I watched her, wondering if she could remember. She cocked her head at it, face not holding any sense of recognition with it. I thought so. I thought it would be impossible that this girl would be her. “What’s her name?” Hazel asked, curious.

I blinked, taking back the photo. Other than those two flashbacks I had of the girl, I knew nothing. “I don’t know. I don’t really remember much about her.”

“That’s a shame.” Hazel shrugged, going over to my dresser, seeing a stack of CDs.

I pretty much caught myself staring at her. Her hair was still wet, but she had it up in a bun. She had on a loose shirt, something I was sure belonged to my father and the bottom hem of shorts I could barely see from the shirt she was wearing. It revealed her legs, and seeing how the weather has been getting chilly and wet lately, I’ve never seen her wear any.

Yeah, call me perverted, but I was a guy after all. She had some nice legs.

My eyes quickly shot up to hers as she turned, holding a CD case. “John Mayer?”

He had a few songs I liked. I took the case from her, taking out the CD and handing back the empty case. She took out the book as I placed the CD into the small stereo I’ve had since I was a young teenager. I skipped to one of my favorites songs by him.

Paper Doll started playing. I watched as Hazel’s head slowly nodded as she walked over to the bed and sat down. “Hey, Li, do you have anything I can draw with?”

I thought for a moment. “Yeah, probably. Let me go find something.”

I left her in my room, walking downstairs to where Ruth’s room used to be. Mum and Dad could be heard in the living room, laughing at the TV. I opened the door to her room. I knew right then what Mum said wasn’t true, but instead was trying to make an excuse to get me and Hazel to sleep in the same room… on the same bed at that. It wasn’t like we’ve never done that before, so it wasn’t something I was going to freak out over, but I knew what my mum was doing was to press it into something more.

I grabbed Ruth’s old sketchpad and a pencil from her room before heading back upstairs. John Mayer’s song was still playing as I handed the pad and pencil to her. “Thanks.” She smiled before leaning back against the headboard. I climbed over to sit beside her. I wanted to watch her draw. I’ve only seen her do it once before, but never really got to see the whole process.

It really was something, watching her. Her strokes were sure, and what I thought was random, it was efficient. She really was talented. I didn’t ask her who exactly she was drawing, because I had a pretty good picture. She was drawing two people: Mum and Dad. She drew them first, where they were smiling at each other, holding an expression of true love, followed by an indication of a background of what I recognized as the kitchen.

To think she could catch a brief moment like that between my mother and father… I was rendered speechless. When she was done, she turned the paper to where I can see it. I stared, no words able to come out.

“It’s…” I still couldn’t find the words.

My eyes turned away from the pad where they met with her hazel orbs. “Love can be a beautiful thing, huh?” She asked, a smile lighting up on her face. She turned back to the picture. “I remember both my mother and father being together. It’s strange though, because there was a short time where I remembered us three being together, but not in our old home in the country.”

“What do you mean?” I questioned.

“I don’t know.” She answered honestly. “I just… can’t remember, but…”

She looked over, seeing the picture in my hand. I looked down, seeing the picture of me and the young girl. “Thinking about it now, somehow I feel I don’t want to remember. I know it has to do with my dad, he’s gone, and… seeing what happened to my mother… I’m scared, Liam. I just don’t want to experience that kind of pain again.”

I saw her tears falling. I put the picture down by my leg and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her to my chest. I held her tight. “I’m sorry, Hazel.”

But my words only seemed to make her breakdown worse than before. I rested my cheek on the back of her head, closing my eyes, hearing John Mayer’s next song tune in.
