Million Dollar Sinner

The earlier struggle that I’d attempted had been short lived and rendered almost useless immediately without any need to event wanting to put up a fight. Choking harshly as I tried to catch my breath; warm and salty tears ran down my cheeks one by one pooling at the corners of my lips which my tongue, without haste, eagerly lapped at due to dehydration. Weak was the only word which could be used to describe how my legs felt. My arms were strained as I gripped tightly at the cold metal bars which surrounded me in the dark.

Attempting to force myself up to stand but failing and falling flat down with knees scraping the ground – the sound of un-hushed murmurs and gears grinding caught my attention as deep coloured red velvet curtains gracefully parted before me and I quickly came to realize that I was on a stage; surrounded by hundreds of mask covered faces I’d never seen before. Blinded momentarily by a bright flash of spotlights which eventually came to rest on me, I tried to ask where I was and what was happening before being cut off rudely by a man in costume on stage.

“And here we have ladies and gentleman our last sale for tonight – for this fine young specimen we’ll be starting the bids at $100,000.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“And I’ll take offers for $200,000, $400,000 that is...”, the auctioneer sung starting to get the crowd enthusiastic, “1.4 million, 4 million, 9 million, 14 million.”

Bids were flying from all around the auction theatre. Trying to wipe some hair clear from my eyes so that I had a full view of what was going on, the numbers started slowing down; the initial buzz was reaching its climax.

The sound of a mallet coming down hard to signal the end of what was going on the words , “Sold for 20 million...” rang threw my ears as the cage I sat in was wheeled off the stage.
