A generic drug is a copy that is the same as a brand-name drug in dosage, safety, and strength


The generic drugs name is assigned, in the United States, by an official body—the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council.

The brand name or proprietary name of a drug is developed by the company requesting approval for the drug and identifies it as the exclusive property of that company.

Generic drugs are as safe as brand name drugs

• Generic manufacturers are able to sell their products for lower prices because they are not required to repeat the costly clinical trials of new drugs and generally do not pay for costly advertising, marketing, and promotion. In addition, multiple generic companies are often approved to market a single product; this creates competition in the market place, often resulting in lower prices.
