Chapter 19

I woke to the sound of feet on stairs. I groaned and opened my eyes. I was still on Enola's sofa. I sat up and rubbed my face roughly to wake myself up more.
"Harry?" Enola's surprised voice came from behind me. I turned and smiled weakly at her. "You slept here?" She asked rounding the sofa, her hand on my shoulder.
I nodded, "Yeah, I fell asleep watching television after I put you and Darcy in bed." Enola looked at me in a way I had never seen before, not even when we were together. "What?" I asked quietly, feeling uncomfortable.
"You undressed me and everything?" She inquired with her eyes not meeting mine.
"Yeah." I nearly whispered. "But I didn't like...touch you or anything. I still love you but I'm not a creep." I informed her.
She giggled, "I know, Harry. I remember you stopping when I woke up for a second. I know you wouldn't do that to me." I nodded and looked down at my hands. "You put Darcy to bed as well?" She asked after an awkward moment of silence.
"Yeah. I did. It was easy. Read her a story then sang to her. She was out fairly quickly." I answered.
"So, why did you stay?" Enola smiled.
"I, uh, cleaned up the messes that Darcy and I made. I picked up her toys and stuff. Then I sat down, for what I planned on being just a minute but.." I chuckled. "I feel asleep watching an old black and white movie." I stated.
Enola smiled and took my hand, "Come on. I'll make you some tea and some breakfast." I nodded and stood. I followed her into the kitchen. I sat down at the island while she put the tea pot on the stove. "So, I wanted..." She began then sighed heavily.
"Noli." I chuckled again.
"I wanted to thank you. You've been doing so much for Darcy and I...I honestly can't begin to thank you for it." She stated.
I shook my head, "Don't worry about it. I love spending time with her." Enola smiled and gave a single nod. "Though I would enjoy like taking her to the zoo or something one of these days. Do something fun before I have to leave."
Enola laughed, "I'm sure she would love if you two did that."
"Oh, you're coming too." I smiled warmly at her. Enola smirked a little. "What you are? What's a day at the zoo without Mummy yelling about sunscreen?" I teased. Enola agreed to go. Suddenly, there was a knock on the front door. She furrowed her brow and left the kitchen. I stood and went to the doorway. I leaned against the frame as she answered the door. I smiled when I saw the bouquet of peonies. The lady that was delivering them was the owner that I delt with. She saw me and hid a smile. I winked at her then stepped back into the kitchen. I sat at the island once again and waited for Enola to return. "Some one must really like you." I stated as she walked in with the vase.
She looked distraught, "Yeah, but I don't even know who. I talk to the boys, Sophia, Brynn and you. I don't really know anyone else, well, beside the people at the gallery. I don't think any of those men are even straight to be honest."
"Who said a man had to send them?" I asked with a lifted eyebrow.
She blushed, "Good point."
"Don't worry about it. They'll probably send you a card or something sooner or later." I said nonchalantly, trying to keep my cool. She shrugged and set the flowers down on the table. I bit down on my lip when she turned her back to me. I let my shoulders shake with laughter. When she looked back at me, I smiled pleasantly. She looked at me curiously then went back to making breakfast.
"HARRY!" Darcy shouted excitedly as she ran into the kitchen. I scooped her up in my arms quickly. She kissed my lips sweetly then snuggled into me. "Morning Mummy." Darcy beamed at Enola. Enola smiled and shook her head.
I gazed up at Enola, "She's going to have a full blown accent."
Enola shrugged, "Oh well. She lives here." I nodded and stared at Darcy's tussled hair and wrinkled pajamas. I ran my fingers through Darcy's hair gently, trying to smooth it out. "It's no use Harry. She's got my hair beside the color. I'm going to have to put her hair up today." Enola laughed.
"Ooooh, can I have a ponytail?" Darcy exclaimed. Enola laughed again and nodded in response to her daughter. Darcy turned her big green eyes to me, "Are you staying with us today, Harry?"
"Yes I am." I grinned at her.
"Don't you have to go to the studio?" Enola inquired with a wary look in her eye.
I shook my head, "Nope."
"That was a lie." Enola stated pointing her knife at me. "You smirked and had that little twinkle in your eye. What time do you need to be there?" Enola's tone was stern, the motherly side of her coming out with me.
"I'm not going. They can get on without me for one day. They will live. I'm sick of being by them anyway. All they do is pester me and ask dumb questions. And I'm not feeling very creative today." I babbled like Darcy would. Enola shook her head and turned her back to me.
"Harry, would you help me get dressed?" Darcy asked quietly.
"Noli, we're going to go get dressed." I said standing with Darcy in my arms. Enola smiled and let us leave the room.

I sat on the sofa with Darcy while Enola got dressed for the day. We had decided to go to the zoo like we talked about before Darcy woke up. Enola said that she wanted to take pictures and the park near the zoo was a good place to do so. I knew that it would be a bit risky to go out with Enola and Darcy but I didn't care. The paparazzi could print what they wanted. My happiness was with these girls. I was snapped out of my thoughts when my phone started to ring. I looked at the screen: Liam. I was about ten minutes late for studio time. I turned the sound on my phone off. I didn't want the boys ruining my day. I leaned back and watched Darcy play with her dolls. She combed their hair and changed their clothes.
"Look, she wearing butterflies too!" Darcy beamed showing me her doll.
"Oooh, pretty." I chuckled. Darcy giggled and went back to her dolls. I stroked her ponytail gently as I was captivated by her concentration on the toys in front of her.
"Harry, are you ready to go?" Enola asked me from the other side of the sofa. I smiled up at her. She looked so beautiful. She had on a pair of old jeans with holes in the knees and that clung to her thighs and bum. Her shirt was an old, faded The Doors shirt and she wore a flannel that used to be mine.
"Hey, you know I've been looking for that shirt for years? I thought I left it at a hotel or something." I laughed as I stood up. I picked Darcy up as Enola blushed.
She shook her head, "No, you left it at my studio in LA. I didn't have the heart to get rid of it." She went to take it off, "Here, you can have it back."
I stopped her, "No. It looks better on you anyway." She blushed once again. "Come on. Let's go see some animals." I beamed at her and Darcy. Darcy clapped loudly as I walked toward the front door.

Darcy held my hand tightly as we roamed around the zoo. Enola held her other hand just as tightly as we walked up to the big cat enclosure. Darcy got excited and let go of my hand and Enola's. She ran toward the enclosure. I chased after her quickly. I grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back from the glass. I shushed her so she would stop squealing.
"Baby, you have to be quiet or you're going to make them angry." I murmured to her as I knelt behind her. She looked back at me and nodded. Darcy stood in my embrace staring at the lions. "Do you see that big one sleeping?" I asked her as I pointed to the very large male cat on the top of the structure. Darcy nodded and her eyes lit up. I chuckled and hugged her a bit tighter. My eyes shot up when I felt a hand on my shoulder. Enola smiled down at me then smoothed my hair gently. I loved the feeling of her completely innocent gesture. She looked genuinely happy though. I knew it was because of the light in Darcy's eyes. I took her wrist and held it gently. I lightly stroked the soft, tender skin. She smiled and leaned against me.
"Can we go look at the monkeys?" Darcy asked me with a bright smile.
I nodded, "Monkeys it is."

I sat with Enola on the grass in the park. I was a bit shocked that I hadn't noticed any paparazzi and that fans hadn't come up to us. I was happy with it though. I was having a completely uninterrupted day with Enola and Darcy. I smiled as I watched Darcy run around in front of Enola and I; she was chasing a butterfly.
"She's never going to get that thing." I laughed quietly. Enola laughed as well and sat forward a little more. Enola gazed at Darcy with intense eyes for a moment then called her over.
"Darcy, baby, come here." Enola spoke with a warm tone. Darcy sighed heavily and made her way to Enola and I. "Don't chase the butterfly." Enola murmured to Darcy.
"But Mummy..." Darcy whined.
Enola smiled, "Don't chase her. Come on." Darcy stood from beside me then led Darcy over to where the butterfly had landed. "Be very still and very quiet." Enola instructed Darcy. The curly headed girl nodded. "Now, put your hand out near her as slowly as you can. We don't want to scare her." Enola spoke quietly to Darcy. Darcy did as she was told. Enola and Darcy stayed still and silent for a few moments and I gazed at them with all of the love in my heart pouring into my eyes. I sat forward and wrapped my arms around my knees to study them. They both moved forward with a slow, steady motion. Darcy had an intense look of concentration while Enola seemed at ease. Darcy glanced up at her mother and I could see her relax. She breathed deeply and slowly. The butterfly crawled up onto her tiny fingers. Darcy's breath caught and she beamed brightly. "Ssshhh, baby, be quiet and don't move." Enola said calmly. Darcy turned her eyes to Enola as if to read her emotions. Darcy stared back down at the butterfly on her fingers. My heart warmed as did the rest of my body. My soul was lit on fire from seeing the two play off each others emotions. They were completely in tune with one another. I quickly pulled my phone from my pocket and took a picture of them. I smiled brightly as I looked at the captured moment. I put my phone back into my pocket as it began to ring again. The boys had been taking turns calling me. I always ignored them. I turned the sound off so Enola wouldn't know.
"Harry, Harry look!" Darcy whispered excitedly as she and Enola came toward me. The butterfly was still on her hand as she knelt in front of me.
"Whoa, look at that!" I whispered as well. Darcy giggled softly and looked at the butterfly with wonder. I smiled and tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. Suddenly, the butterfly took off from Darcy's hand. She didn't appear sad though.
Darcy waved at the butterfly, "Bye bye!" I couldn't help but smile at the gesture. She was so much like her mother. She wasn't upset about the butterfly leaving because she held it in her hand and made friends with it, even though it was only for a few moments. I wish I could've seen things in the way they did. Darcy got up and ran off again. I gazed at her as she spun in circles staring up at the sky.
"Harry." Enola murmured moving closer to me. I hummed quietly as she rested her chin on my shoulder. "What are you thinking?" She inquired softly.
I chuckled, "Ya done good, kid."
Enola laughed loudly, "What are you talking about?"
"Darcy. She's perfect. So sweet and so..." I blushed as I looked at Enola's big blue eyes, "I don't know how to describe it." Enola smiled, a light filling her eyes that I hadn't seen before. I kissed her forehead, "You make beautiful children."
"I had some help." Enola giggled quietly as she placed her hand on my shoulder next to her chin.
I sighed heavily and looked at Darcy again, "Yeah." I didn't want to talk about Charles. I hated that man. Not just because he was the reason Enola and I weren't together anymore and he hurt Enola every chance he got but because he had Darcy. A perfect child that deserved a better father.
Enola stroked my cheek gently with her forefinger, "Are you mad that I haven't said who her dad is?" I shook my head. "Why do you seem so upset then?"
"She deserves a better one." I replied quietly. My mind started to wander a little. Why would she need to say who Darcy's dad was? We all knew. Darcy was her child with Charles. I looked at Enola for a moment, seeing a strange look in her eyes. Wasn't she?
Enola kissed my cheek lightly when she saw the shift in my eyes, "Please don't Harry. Just be happy we're all together. You, me, Darcy, the boys. Kind of like the way it used to be."
"It's exactly the way it used to be." I stated with a sting of attitude from my bitterness.
Enola lifted her eyebrow at me, "And how is that?"
I stared into her eyes intensely, "I still love you and you're still running." She frowned and backed away from me. She lowered her eyes to her hands and cleared her throat. I hurt her feelings. I sighed heavily and went to place my hand on her back. I hesitated then pulled away completely. "I'm sorry. I didn't...I'm sorry Enola." I murmured.
She shook her head, "I should've been different the first time around. I should've been honest. Maybe..." She sighed quietly, "Maybe you wouldn't have been so broken."
"I'm not asking for an apology for the way things went. I loved you more than anything. I still do. But maybe, we were never meant to be more than a stolen moment." I repeated Louis. Enola looked even more sad. "I'm always going to love you, Enola Grace. Not even time could change that." I assured her. She leaned her head on my shoulder and wiped tears from her face. I put my arm around her and held her close. This is what life was going to be. She was going to be my best friend. Enola and Darcy were going to be my safest place to hide. That was what I was doing with them, hiding.

I pulled up to Enola's house and groaned quietly. Louis' car, along with Liam's and Niall's, were in her drive. I looked at her with begging eyes. We had been out of the house all day. It was nearly seven in the evening.
"You made the choice, Harry. Now you have to deal with it." Enola murmured to me. I turned back to Darcy. She was fast asleep in her car seat. I begged Enola with my eyes again. "You can carry her in if it will make you feel better." She chuckled.
I sighed in relief, "Thank you." We both climbed out of my car and I went for Darcy in the backseat. I carefully unbuckled her then scooped her up in my arms. Darcy whimpered quietly as I settled her in my arms. She laid her head on my shoulder and tucked her arms between our bodies. I kissed her hair and waited for Enola to remove her car seat from my car. As we walked toward the house, I smiled at Enola, "What are you guys doing tomorrow?"
She shrugged, "I don't know."
"What do you think about coming to the studio?" I inquired hopefully. She lifted her eyebrow at me. I smiled letting my dimples make a full appearance and begged, "Please."
"Harry," She sighed, "I don't know. I don't want Darcy to be a bother while you're working."
"Please." I repeated. She gave me a saddened look. "Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please." I asked over and over as we walked toward the living room. I could tell she was getting annoyed and I was wearing her down.
"Alright! Alright! We'll come." Enola shouted exasperatedly.
I beamed at her, "Thanks." She shook her head and entered the living room. I heard her greet the boys, a smile in her voice. I inhaled deeply and gazed down at the sleeping child in my arms. I kissed her hair again then rested my cheek on her head. I let my eyes close as I held her close enough to feel her breathing and her heartbeat. After a moment of just holding Darcy, I decided it was time to face the boys. I entered the room to have three sets of eyes land on me with menacing stares. I sat down on the sofa next to Enola, making sure she was between Louis and I. Enola giggled a little. "What?" I whispered.
"You are such a baby." I stuck my tongue out at her quickly, not liking her statement. She giggled again and shook her head.
"Harry." Louis began sourly. I sat quietly. I didn't even look at him. "Is there a reason that you didn't come to the studio or answer your phone today?" Louis inquired leaning over Enola a little.
I sighed and scratched my head, "I didn't want to."
"That's your excuse? You didn't feel like it?" Liam was angry. I could see it in his eyes. I hugged Darcy a tighter when she stirred. Liam had raised his voice a bit too much.
I glared at him, "You better not wake her up." Liam rolled his eyes and sank into the sofa. He had more to say. He had a lot more to say but didn't for the girls' sake.
"Are you boys staying for dinner?" Enola asked Louis, Liam and Niall.
"Sophia is at home. I've not spoken to her all day. I should go home." Liam stated.
Enola scoffed, "Call her and tell her to come over. Ni, call Brynn." I chuckled and relaxed into the sofa as she got up from the sofa. "Harry, try to wake Darcy up so she's wide awake when we eat."
I saluted her, "Yes, ma'am." She rolled her eyes and rounded the sofa, placing her hand on top of my head for a moment. I leaned into her touch then she removed her hand. I watched her glide into the kitchen. Tanned, toned legs carried her gracefully.
I smirked as she yelled, "Cut it out, Styles!" I had been staring at her rear once again. It was amazing that she could feel my stare and the heat coming off of me from so far away. I turned my eyed back to the boys. They all still looked pissed off but they now had amusement written on their faces as well.
"You two work on things?" Louis asked resting his hand on my shoulder.
"We talked a bit. Mostly about Darcy but, we're trying to be friends." I explained quietly. Louis and Niall looked pleased with the fact.
"And friends act the way you two do?" Liam inquired with a bit of attitude.
"Well, it's going to be a little different for us. We do have an...intense history. But I want it to work. I'd rather her be my friend than not in my life at all." I replied tensing. Liam lifted his eyebrow at me. "Liam, just let it go. You've got a good woman that's never going to leave you. You wouldn't get it." I sighed not wanting to talk about it anymore.
"You really did miss a lot at the studio today. We finished a song and we started recording some others. You really should've called or something." Louis stated with a less irritated tone.
I sighed heavily and rubbed Darcy's back, "I know but...I just...I wasn't feeling it when I got up. Then Darcy got up and all, it was...this is what I wanted to do today." Louis smiled a bit and gave a single nod.
"Just make sure that you come in tomorrow. We really need you to do vocals and some writing. I know spending the day with Darcy is so much fun for you but..." Niall stopped speaking when he noticed my smirk. "What? What did you do?" He inquired.
"The girls are coming with me to the studio tomorrow." I answered quietly.
Louis shrugged, "At least you'll be at the studio." I smiled brightly then went about trying to wake Darcy so we could eat dinner.
