Fool's Gold

Chapter 76

Home. Yeah, right. This wasn't home. It never had been. This big house. This fifteen thousand square foot house was not a home. As long as Charles owned it, it never would be. I dropped my bag in the guest room. I didn't want to wake Charles and I really didn't want him going through my bag. If I set it in a room he wouldn't bother to go in, he wouldn't even think about it. I sighed heavily looking around the guest room. My eyes caught a glimpse of the bathroom. A shower. A shower was a good idea. As much as I didn't want to rid my body of the smell of Harry, I needed to. I stepped into the guest room fully and shut the door, locking it behind me. I made my way to the bathroom, shedding clothing with every step. A shower would also help me relax enough to go to sleep.

I carefully crawled into bed beside Charles. I didn't want to jostle him too much. I knew if I woke him, he'd just try to start a fight and I was too tired for that. I snuggled under the blankets and tried to relax. I couldn't. I opened my eyes and stared at my sleeping husband. His dark, cropped hair was tussled. His mouth was hanging open and he was snoring softly. I reached out and placed my hand on his chest. I felt the large sculpted muscles of his chest. I frowned at the feel of his chest hair. I loved the way Harry felt. Strong but smooth and soft as well. Charles just felt like a brute, which he very much was. Charles shifted with a small groan. I bit down on my lip, waiting for him to start yelling at me.
"Hey honey." Charles whispered, sleep filling his voice.
"Hi." I murmured. Was he dreaming I was someone else climbing into his bed? He was never so nice to me in the middle of the night when I woke him.
"When did you get in?" He kept his voice at a whisper.
I smiled a little, "About an hour ago. I took a shower. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you." I was bracing for a shift in his mood. I was waiting to be hollered at.
"Come here." Charles murmured, motioning me closer to him. I scooted a little closer. Charles chuckled tiredly, "No. Come here." He put his arm around my shoulders and tugged me into his side. I laid my head on his chest and draped my arm over his chiseled abs. I closed my eyes and tried to fight back the tears. What was he doing? What was happening? I wanted Harry. I liked lying on Harry's chest. Feeling Harry's skin against my cheek. Harry's legs wrapped around mine. "Did you miss home?" Charles asked. I realized that I had started to cry. My tears were falling onto Charles' chest. I just nodded. I didn't want the broken sob I was holding back to come out. It wasn't home that I missed. I missed Harry already. This didn't feel right. I didn't like the way this felt. It was all wrong. Charles rubbed my back then kissed my hair. "Well, you're home now. No crying." Charles spoke so sweetly to me. Who was this man that I had crawled into bed with? This man was not my husband. This was not the man I left ten days ago. Where was that guy? Where was the asshole that couldn't keep his mouth closed? Who was this sweet guy lying beside me? What was going on? I lifted my head from Charles' chest for a moment to see that he had already fallen back into sleep. I shook off the thoughts of his change in character and focused on trying to fall asleep. I imagined Harry's bright, green eyes and the feeling of his chest. I drifted off to sleep dreaming of my boyfriend holding me instead of my husband.
I woke alone. I looked over at the clock to see that it was well after eight in the morning. I wanted more sleep but it was a horrible idea. I had to get up and start the daily routine for being home. I needed to clean the rooms we spent the most time in and make a plan for dinner. Back to being a lonely housewife. I scratched my head as I sat up in the bed. I needed to get dressed. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand. I had two messages. One from Charles and the other from Harry.
I opened the text from Charles first: Come by the office around eleven. I rolled my eyes. I hated going to his office. I hated the way everyone looked at me.
I opened the message from Harry: Good morning beautiful. Just wanted to tell you that I love you and I miss you already. I hope you have a great day. Get some rest and call me when you can gorgeous. I love you. I smiled at Harry's text. What a man. I jumped out of the bed ready to start my day. I quickly changed into jeans and a t-shirt so I could start the cleaning. I also needed to unpack before Charles got home. I did end up taking one of Harry's shirts to wear while I was working; I had to get that shirt to my studio as soon as possible.

I entered Charles' office with a heavy sigh. I didn't want to be there. I wanted to go home and go to sleep. The week I had spent with Harry wore me out. I wanted sleep. Charles' assistant met me as I stepped off the elevator.
"Hi Mrs. Gunther, how are you doing this fine day?" Matt asked with a warm smile.
"I'm fine, Matt. Thanks. How are you?" I replied politely. I liked Matt. He was always friendly with me and he had a habit of walking into Charles office when things were starting to get heated between Charles and I. Matt was also the one thing about Charles' job that I got to pick. I said he was never allowed to have a female assistant. If I had to be miserable, so did he.
"Great! It was a long week being in New York with Mr. Gunther. Sad you didn't make it out." Matt stated leading me toward Charles office. I gave him a fake smile. I couldn't even lie about being upset. I had the time of my life with Harry. "He missed you, ya know. Kept talking about how he couldn't wait for you to get home and all." Matt smiled warmly at me. I nodded, less than amused by Matt's statement. Charles was only upset I was gone because he didn't have someone to yell at, berate and make feel less than human. Matt knocked on Charles' door loudly then opened the door. He stuck his head into the room, "Mr. Gunther, your Misses is here." I heard Charles grunt; his way of telling Matt to let me into the office. "Go ahead. I'll hold his calls and keep people away while you two talk." Matt smiled at me. Another fake smile crossed my lips. I hated that Charles and I kept up the appearance of a happy marriage.
I walked into the room silently, closing the door behind me. Charles motioned me further into the room with one hand. He was on the phone with someone who was obviously annoying him. I could see it in his eyes and furrowed brow. I sat down in one of the chairs in front of his desk. I crossed my legs politely and rested my head on my fist, waiting for him to finish his call. Why the hell was I here if he was just going to be on the phone? I sighed heavily and picked at the hem of my skirt for a moment. I smiled to myself as I examined my skirt. It was Harry's favorite skirt. He liked the floral print. He loved the length; it was long enough to be tasteful but short enough that he could easily slip between my legs if we were secluded. Though I loved the skirt, I hated that I had to dress up just to be in Charles' office.
My head snapped up and my thoughts away from Harry when I heard Charles return his phone to the hook. I smiled weakly at him when his eyes met mine. I was preparing myself for an unpleasant conversation. Charles smiled brightly at me. I was shocked by the gesture.
"I'm happy to see you, Kitten." Charles' voice held happiness. I shuddered at the nickname. I hated when he called me kitten. There was something about it that made it feel creepy.
"I'm glad to be home." I lied with a graceful smile.
"Me too." He stood from his chair then rounded the desk. I looked up at him as he walked toward me. I knew that walk. I hated that strut. My insides churned. I didn't want him to touch me. I wasn't ready for Harry's touch to be wiped away yet. Charles took my hand and lifted me from the chair with a sinister smirk. My stomach dropped and I felt my face drain of color. Charles wrapped his arms around my waist pulling me tight against him. I placed my hands on his chest to steady myself. My breath caught when I noticed the way my hands looked against his chest. They didn't fit there. My hands on Harry's chest, that looked right. I turned my face up to look my husband in the eyes. His eyes were cold. When Harry held me in a similar fashion, his eyes were warm and loving. Charles reminded me of a wolf: hungry and menacing. I gripped his bicep tightly, waiting for the impact of his harsh, rough kiss. After only a moment, his mouth met mine. I wanted to gag as he jammed his tongue between my lips way too soon. I didn't want this. I wanted Harry soft lips, his tender caress. Not the rough, thoughtless, demanding touch of the man before me. "Kitten, are you alright?" Charles inquired with an almost rude tone.
I nodded, "I'm fine. Just tired." I tried to slip out of his arms but he tightened his grip. I wasn't getting out of it. I was stuck.
"I know exactly what will wake you up." His sinister smile reappeared. Charles lifted me quickly then set my bum down on the edge of his desk. Charles lifted my skirt, bunching it around my hips. I gripped the edge of the desk to steady my body. Charles was doing nothing to keep me from falling. He wasn't even doing anything to make me comfortable. Harry always made sure that I was secure and comfortable where I was whether it was the bed, the floor or anywhere else that struck our fancy. "Do you want me to go lock the door?" Charles asked. Again, shock took over me. He'd never cared before. Matt had walked in many a time when Charles decided he wanted to have sex in his office. I nodded quickly. I was going to take advantage of his offer. I didn't want be to be any more humiliated than I knew I was going to be. Charles went to his office door and locked it quickly. He used his same ridiculous strut to return to me. He knelt down on the floor in front of me before removing my panties. I inhaled deeply and slowly waiting for his usually rough "foreplay". I jumped feeling Charles' mouth on my flesh. He took no care in the way he moved his tongue over my most sensitive of areas. I gripped his shoulder tightly and let my head drop back. I closed my eyes tightly and tried to think of the way that Harry would do what Charles was doing. Harry was slow and gentle. He would deliver the softest of flicks with his tongue as opposed to Charles and his rough, wide licks. I tried to imagine burying my hands in Harry's hair and the loving caresses on my thighs from his strong hands. I yelped when Charles sucked my clit with a brutal force. He smirked against my skin and did it harder. The man couldn't tell that I was in pain? How couldn't he see that I was not emotionally aroused by his actions? But I guess the body responds to stimulation...even if your heart and brain are telling you that you hate it.
Charles stood from the floor quickly, unbuttoning his trousers at the same time. I wanted to smirk as he lowered his pants. Another way that Harry was superior. Women could say size didn't matter all they wanted. It did. And my husband was inferior to my boyfriend in yet another way. I wanted to start laughing. If only Charles knew what I was thinking when he thought that my mind was completely preoccupied with letting him fuck me.
"Stand up and turn around." Charles commanded. I was snapped from my amusement at the sound of his harsh voice. I hoped that I hadn't smirked or laughed. "NOW." Charles appeared mad. I quickly hopped off the desk and did as told. I didn't want to make things worse for myself. Charles grabbed my hips tightly, digging his fingers into my skin. He pulled me back a little then spread my legs even more. I bit down on my lip, bracing for the uncomfortable moment that would come next. Charles thrust his hips forward, burying his dick inside me. He groaned softly. I wanted to cry as he began to thrust. It hurt. He was rarely gentle with me.
My mind drifted to Harry once again. Harry was always gentle, even when he wasn't he was. Harry never hurt me. I dug my fingernails into Charles hands. I wanted him to feel just a fraction of what I did. He slapped one of my hands away from his. I let go of his hand and placed it on the desk for support; Charles wasn't helping with that either. I whimpered when Charles took a handful of my hair and tugged, jerking my head back. That's when the worst part started. The words that came out of his mouth as my body acclimated to his thrusts. "You're such a fucking whore." He whispered into my ear. My muscles tightened around him even though I was on the verge of tears. "You know you are. Only whores get off like this." He removed his other hand from my hip and put it around my throat. He gripped tightly. After only another few moments, he let go of my throat and pushed my torso down on his desk. He held me down by the back of my neck as he spewed more vile words. I shut my eyes tightly and tried to think of the sound of Harry's deep, sweet voice. I bit down on my bottom lip as tears fell from my eyes. I rested my forehead on the desk, trying to keep from having a complete breakdown. How could Harry love me? How? I let this malevolent, abusive man touch me. Finally, Charles groaned loudly. I was sure everyone in the office heard him coming. He flopped down in the chair behind me as I stood upright. My legs felt like noodles. My right leg had numbed from the pressure that he'd put on me. I bent down to pick up my panties. I turned to Charles and slipped back into them. "Are you okay, Kitten? You're crying." Charles asked, faking concern. How could he really care about my feelings if he said the things he did?
I nodded and lied, "Was really strong for me." Charles smirked and stood from the chair. He pulled up his trousers. "I'm going to go to my studio for a while. Develop some pf the photographs I took." I stated fixing my skirt.
Charles grunted, "Fine. Be home in time to make dinner though. I've had enough of take out."
I ran my hand through my hair, "Okay. What do you want?"
Charles shrugged, "None of that fruity stuff that you eat while you're traveling. I don't want any kind of rubbery fish or strange vegetable that I can't pronounce."
"Steak and..." I trailed off.
"Watch your attitude, Enola." Charles growled at me. "Steak, salad, potatoes, asparagus, broccoli. Normal food." He answered my question.
"I'm allergic to asparagus. Five years of marriage and you still don't remember that." I huffed quietly.
"Attitude." Charles warned me again. I sucked my bottom lip in, causing him to smile. "Don't make that then. I'm just saying. I want NORMAL food." I nodded and picked up my purse. As I walked out, Charles said my name again. I looked back at him. "I love you. I'm glad you're home." He stated in a sweet tone.
I returned the smile, "Me too." I hustled out of his office without another word. I wanted to get as far away from him as possible.

I sat in my car on my way to my studio when my phone rang. I picked it up and checked the screen. Harry. Tears began to fall down my face within an instant. I threw my phone onto the seat beside me. I couldn't speak to him. Not after what I had just done. I knew he would be worried but I just couldn't talk to him. I didn't want him to be worried and I didn't want to tell him what I'd done. I couldn't. I wiped my face as I pulled into a small lot. I turned off the car and left my ringing phone on the seat. I got out of the car on mission. I huffed as I looked up at the drugstore sign.
