Distracted

Prologue

I zipped up my suitcase and dragged it into the living room, “that’s it mum, I’m all packed”
“Are you sure you want to go? I’ll be so worried”
“I’m going to be fine mum, it’s only London, it’s not like I’m leaving the country”
My mother, Julianne Richards had always been a worrier, especially since my father left when I was 12 years old. It was a tough time for all of us and I just wish that she had found someone else and moved on.
“well, if you’re going to torture me like this, you better get out there and do what you love, don’t give up Shay. I mean it, do whatever you have to do to get your songs out there”
I gave my mum a teary smile, and she gave me one back. I was only moving down the country, from Northampton to Walthamstow, East London. It’s not like I wouldn’t ever see her again.

I placed the last box onto the floor of my studio flat “well that’s the last of them, thank you so much for helping me” I spoke to the stranger who’d helped me with my boxes, I was a little weary at first but he was nice. “no problem, I know how hard it is being on your own for the first time” he smiled, as he walked out of the door.
I had arrived an hour earlier, after spending a fortune on that taxi ride, with the grumpiest taxi driver I had ever met, I wasn’t about to tip him extra to help me up the stairs with my boxes. Instead I risked my things either being stolen or mistaken for rubbish. Smart move Shay.
I grabbed the keys my landlord had given me when I arrived and headed out, locking the door behind me. I needed food.
