Nothing Without Love

One of us has to look nice

Josie's POV

“So Stan just landed, the should all be here within the hour.” He explains as he brings up the last of our bags. “Hope you don't mind, we have to share a room. I got a three bedroom condo but Stan said Davis won't sleep in on of those portable cribs or in a room with his parents so he has to have his own room.” He explains and I'm sure that's the truth but I sense a little lie in the fact that it's convenient that now we have to share a bedroom. “But I can sleep on the couch.” He points out, directing me to the more like loveseat size couch in the sitting room.

“Well it's a little small, don't you think?” I laugh. “It's a king sized bed Louis, we can sleep in it and not even touch. It's fine.” I shrug and plop my suitcase on the bed. Another thing about me, I can't live out of a suitcase. When I get somewhere I have to put stuff away. Bathroom things, things away in the dresser. Louis doesn't jump on the idea, all but throwing the suitcase his suitcase on top of the dresser on the other side of the room. It's a cute room, plain, just a little seaside accents, mainly blue and cream with a little bit of orange. It's a big room. A bathroom, large closet, and french doors to a small balcony. It's something I'd live in, not just stay for the weekend.

“Okay.” He smiles and I know this is part of his plan. Trying to be so sneaky. “Oh, what am I to call you?” He asks.

“Um Josie?” I ask confused. To call me? That's my name.

“No like a nickname or something along those lines, like an affectionate name. You know that boyfriends and girlfriends have.” He looks away like he's thinking of something. I'm getting a feeling that maybe he didn't even tell Stan he has a girlfriend and this was all a trick. Like a spider web I just walked right into.

“I don't really care.” I laugh, what in the world did I say yes to? This whole weekend. “I don't like the term “baby” I feel like it reminds me of babe the pig.” I finish unpacking and set my bag in the closet. I don't quite know what to do with myself as Louis is still leaning against the banister of the balcony, watching the waves crest and fall.

“Honey I'm home!” I hear a mans voice shout from down the steps and as Louis turns quickly I know it's Stan. His entire face is lit up in excitement as he races past me and down the steps.

“Stan!” He yells so loud I'm sure the sharks in the ocean can hear him. I smile, laughing at their interaction and I can't even see it. I smooth my shirt down and stand, taking a deep breath. Telling myself we can do this, we can pull this off. I peek out the door and hop down the steps, seeing a bright eyed and bushy tailed family of three all hugging each other and laughing. “Babe!” Louis looks at me and I can't help but glare. Are you fucking kidding me? I just told him I didn't like that and here he is, calling me babe. My glare is short lived as I reach the bottom step, and Louis puts his arm around my waist. “Josie this is my very best mate Stan, his wife Sam, and their son Davis. The Lucas family.” We exchange small talk and I find it easy that Louis and Stan are best friends. They remind me of Ophelia and I as they laugh at inside jokes and don't even finish a memory before they start laughing hysterically.

“Well lets get your bags, show you around.” He looks so happy right now. And not a forced happy at all. I've picked up on forced happy Louis already and this is true happy. Not just happy for a minute but happy for the whole time, his face is just beaming. Louis had brought food with him that hasn't been unpacked so while they look around I spend the time unpacking the food from the coolers and the food from the bags. Just listening to snippets of their conversation. I've caught my name once or twice but try not to let it bug me too much because it makes me smile.

“So they'll talk for hours.” Sam surprises me and I jump just a little bit, she's quiet. “Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. Stan and Louis have Davis so I thought I'd help you in the kitchen.” She has a constant smile, she reminds me of Erica just a little, her positive attitude already radiating from her. “Louis hasn't quit talking about you since he told Stan everything about you.” She rolls up her sleeve and I can't quit smiling. It's like my mind is betraying me as I'm not suppose to feel like this, this is something we're just playing. It's just an act and I'm letting myself get into it too much.

“Yeah, he's something.” I laugh, letting her know I'm kidding a little. But he is. He really is something.

“Well what are the women doing?” Stan asks, setting Davis down on the edge of the island, I can tell already that Davis has quite the energy as he starts squirming right away to get down and as soon as he's done he's off to the races.

“Just chatting about how much Louis talks about me.” I act innocently as I pop a few grapes in my mouth. I can see Louis is startled a little and I can't help but smile. I've got him caught a little and he's squirming where he stands.

“God, he won't shut up about you when I bring you up in any way.” He laughs, slapping Louis on the back, pushing him forward as the kitchen erupts in laughter, even Louis.

“How about we go out to eat for dinner? No one has to cook, no one has to do the dishes or worry about leftovers.” Sam smiles, her suggestion in the air.

“That sounds great actually.” I'm not much of a cook, more of a snacker and I'd rather just eat fruits and veggies all day instead of sitting down and cooking a whole meal.

“Okay, so lets all get freshened up and meet down here in like ten minutes?” It's a little early for dinner but by the time we get where ever we're going and get served and head back it will probably be late for Davis.

We all nod and go our separate ways, all up the steps then to our own bedrooms.

“So you've been chatting about me?” I tease as I pull a dress out from the closet and shut the door just enough that Louis can't really peek in but I can still hear him.

“Well I had to make it obvious that we were together, that I'm love sick.” I watch him through the crack in the door as I pull off my jeans and my t-shirt, he's still smiling but he turns his back to me as he changes his shirt. His skin is littered with tattoos. I never really thought I'd go for someone whose got ink all over his body but it suits him. It's hard to picture him without them.

I kick my clothes to the side and pull my orange dress over my head, button up the top ones and slip my tan belt a little tighter. I've already set my nude heals out on the floor so I slip those on easily enough, they're not super high, they don't need to be, just a little lift.

“You look great.” Always smiling but I can see he doesn't quite know what to do with his hands, he's fiddling around with them in front of his body, keeps putting them behind his back, then in his pockets then back to his back. It's a little comical, I always enjoy seeing him nervous because I know I'm getting under his skin.

“Why thank you. One of us has to look nice.” I make a face and look him up and down as he's just wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt. Here I am all dressed up and Louis looks like he's off to the movies as his fifteen year old self.

“Ha. Ha. Ha.” He exaggerates a little. “Thank you, by the way, for doing this for me. Stan is always worried about me. After Eleanor and I broke up he was constantly telling me to slow down, to worry about myself and to not just go out and do whatever I wanted, to think about things. It was crazy because Stan was the crazy one of the bunch when we were growing up. I just get tired of him asking if I've found someone yet so I just lied. Get the monkey off my back. And now were here. He's been there from before the crazy life of One Direction. I can trust him with any secret.” He's sitting on the bed, looking down and it's just crazy to me to hear all these things he's shared with me today. From Eleanor, to his father, to his relationship with his best friend.

It's comforting to know that he trusts me so much.

“We should head down and meet them.” I heard them all walking down the steps a few minutes ago as I hold my hand out for him to grab. This is getting harder and harder to pull away, harder to keep that wall up and at the end of the day be separate from him.

I don't know if he feels the same way but it's getting harder and harder to think that he doesn't feel the same way.
