Obsession

5

I turned the TV off and padded my way to bed. A black shadow shown under the roof, blocking the light and pushed the blank white envelope under. I stood staring at it until the footsteps casually walked way whistling a familiar tune. I hesitantly bent down and picked envelope up, pulling out the unlicked fold from inside the envelope revealing money. 300 pounds to be precise. The exact amount for the rent. I folded the envelope in my hand and walked to my bedroom, pondering on thoughts.

-

“Hello?” my groggy voice answered the vibrating phone that was placed on the floor.

“Why aren’t you at work?!” a panicky voice bellowed the phone.

“What?” I rubbed my eyes as I turned to look up at the ceiling.

“Work? Why aren’t you at work?”

“Who is this?”

“Don’t act stupid with me Tara”

I pulled the phone above my head looking at the caller ID.

“Mum?”

“Clever girl Tara” sarcasm took over her voice. “Now tell me why aren’t you at work”

“I got fired mum” my arm flopped over my eyes.

“What? Why?”

“I was late, so he.. Fired me”

“Tara! You’re a young adult! You should accept responsibility.

“Yeah, I know”

About a minute of silence past.

“How come you know I’m not at work?” I rested the phone between my head and shoulder as I stood up and opened the blind.

“I’m down here”

I froze.

“You’re here? In London?

“That’s what I said, isn’t it?

I gulped. My mum hasn’t always been there for me. When we were younger she was always going out with new men every night which meant I would have to take care of my younger sister. Making her tea, get her showered and into bed. It was just mainly me and her. After our dad died in the Army, my mum went crazy. She was leaving us to go out drinking every day and when she was in the house she had a bottle of vodka in her hands and a cigarette in the other. As we grew older she was one of the mums that would turn up for Christmas, leave after 20 minutes, and then you wouldn’t see or hear from her until next Christmas.

“I’ll be there now”

I hung the phone up before she could say anything else and threw a black jumper, some skinny jeans and of course my trusty uggs before grabbing my bag and walking out of the door.
