The Night It All Went Down

Chapter 7

13th September 2014

Yesterday morning, Kayleigh Michaels (One Direction’s stylist) was seen leaving the Paris police station on 5th Street with all the boys. Rumours are flying about why the stars collected her and nothing’s been helped by the fact Niall Horan was seen with his arm around Michaels’ waist as they left. What’s up with the boys lately? But the question on everybody’s lips is – is Kayleigh really a murderer? Check back tomorrow for more on this hot hot topic!

Niall, Liam and I stood silently in the lift as it crawled down through the 36 floors to the reception. The doors dinged and opened onto the floor.

I felt bodies breeze past me and I glanced up from gazing down at the ground. Three police men run towards the lift and catch it just before the doors clang shut. I hope Harry can deal with it by himself. As if reading my thoughts, Niall touches my arm and smiles, calming me down.

“It’ll be alright. But we need to hurry. Come on.” He says comfortingly.

Quickly, we hurry out of the building and onto the concrete pavement. Curiously enough, there are only a few stragglers but they are too caught up with their phones and each other to even notice us leaving. We head down towards the venue in silence, none of us able to speak, too scared to do anything rational.

It’s only when we are a few blocks away that I notice a lone figure drifting along the pavement parallel to us. They have the same stature as the person I saw when we first arrived here.

“Guys,” I nudge them “I’ve seen him before. If it is a he, of course. The first day we got here, when I was walking in, I saw them. They were walking too but disappeared down that alley.”

“You sure?” Liam asks, as I nod. “Let’s follow them then.”

We go to cross the street as the figure turns down a narrow road, barely wide enough to fit one car down. I frown and try to follow but he’s not there anymore. He’s done a runner- he knew we were on to him and that’s what worries me the most.

I shake my head when Niall and Liam look at me expectantly. “Nada. He’s just…he’s gone! He just disappeared.” I splutter. Niall gives me an odd look and peers down the road, shrugging.

“Whoever it was, he isn’t there now. Let’s go before he comes back. We’ve got to get to the tour bus, we haven’t got that much time.” Niall says.

We walk hurriedly now, anxious to reach the crime scene unspotted, unnoticed and unharmed. The light is beginning to fade now as the sun dips below the hills and I glance up at the sky praying we won’t be in darkness until we reach the tour bus. We run up the steps to the venue where the boys had been going to give a concert and reach the security guards, standing there with their arms folded in front of them and grim looks on their faces.

“Names.” One said, glancing down at a typed list in front of him.

“Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Gracie Long.” Liam replied, drumming his fingers on his thigh, his nervous twitch. I cover it with my hand to make sure the officers don’t notice.

“Through the hall and to the right. Down the steps and out into the back street. You can’t miss it. It’s cordoned off. You’ll be stopped and asked for your names again before you enter.” The grim-faced security guard stepped to one side and allowed us inside. I nodded in thanks and practically ran past him.

The echoey halls are a drastic change for all three of us, generally seeing them crowded full of people busy with their jobs and duties. We hurry through the dark corridors, trying to navigate our way to the back road. We get lost several times though it should have been simple seeing as we were down in the central connecting corridor. We shoved ourselves against the door and spilled out onto the pavement. Night had just begun to take over, stars twinkling in the night sky as we walk towards the tour bus.

I remember a story my adoptive mum used to tell me when I was younger. She used to tell me the story about how the moon died every night so the sun could live and I recall well thinking how I wanted a love like that when I was older. I still wanted that, but I had other priorities now.

Liam and Niall were standing with a harassed looking lady and I made my way over

“Ahh! Gracie! This lady was just letting us in.” Niall threw his arm around my shoulder and flashed a winning smile at the lady. I was surprised she didn’t melt into a puddle right then and there.

“Well….all three of you are on the list so I suppose it couldn’t help. Do you have any questions before you go in?” She asked, giving Niall and Liam her best helpful face. I couldn’t believe it- she’d just helped us about a hundred times more than we expected and she didn’t even realise it! This woman was bloody stupid!

“Well, we were informed the team came across a little difficulty in the case this morning, what would that be?” Liam enquired politely.

”Oh! That,” the woman began in a very flirtatious way “the officers unearthed finger print DNA on the weapon and the body. But, it was traced back to somebody we know is long dead. I’m not sure of the exact name but the officers were thrown. They are trying to get hold of this person’s relatives but it seems as though this person really is dead. Though heavens knows why their DNA was there! I suspect somebody was wearing gloves belonging to them and their DNA was just transferred. Hope that helped boys!” She waves as she wanders off and Liam mutters beneath his breath.

“Cow. Does she not know I have a girlfriend and I’m happy?” He was frustrated but I placated him telling him how she was just a fan.

"She didn’t intend to try and make you cheat on Sophia, Liam. She was probably just starstruck. Come on guys. Let’s split up and see if we can find out what this person’s name is…was.” I hastily corrected myself.

The guys nodded and turned in two different directions. I went the opposite way. Around the back of the tour bus.

I board, cautiously avoiding any areas where I could contaminate the scene. I just want to prove I had nothing to do with Paul’s murder, not jeopardise the actual case. I pick my way around the white tape indicating where Paul’s body had lain and wander into the kitchen, spotting a woman sitting at a table with files spread around her. She was chewing the top of her pen lid and looking at some papers.

“Hi!” I say perkily, sliding into a chair opposite her.

“Oh my goodness! You scared me there! I’m sorry, I was just looking at some files. I’m Veronica but most people call me Ronnie!” Ronnie grins. She looks to be easily in her mid-thirties but her long, raven black hair that falls to her shoulders shows no signs of ageing. There are no wrinkles on her pale face but, as she smiles, her crazy violet eye crinkle up and sparkle.

“I’m Gracie. Wow, you have purple eyes!” Ronnie laughs.

“Yes, they’re contacts. How come you’re here, Gracie? I haven’t seen you around here before!” Ronnie’s smile shrinking just a little.

“Oh! I’m an apprentice, with an all access pass, working on the case.” I smile, recalling the back story I had invented on my way here. No need to tell the truth all the time was there?

“Oh, I see! You training to be a detective then?”

”Yes, I was wondering where I could find the files you’ve got on Paul’s case. I’m supposed to look over a couple.”

“Well, they’re here! You can look at some of these if you’d like! Say, Gracie, you don’t look that much like a policewoman!”

“Nah, but it’s something I’ve been really interested in for years.” I shrug, my heart beginning to pound, panicking that Ronnie was onto me.

She laughs. “Ahh, I see. Well, here’s the case file on the suspects. You know, they say they don’t think that Kayleigh Michaels girl did it but I’m worried they’ve missed something. Something about her story doesn’t quite add up.”

“Oh?” I glance down at the file she handed me, opening to the first page and seeing a woman’s picture.

“Yeah. They say she’s clean but she lied about her family history. Who does that?”

I struggle to not get defensive and clench my fists tightly. “I know Kayleigh Michaels personally. She’s my best friend but I see where you’re coming from.”

“Oh, my goodness! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it like that!” Ronnie brings both her hands to her mouth in apology.

“Oh, no. It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”

“When are you next seeing Kayleigh? I have her phone here and I’d like to give it back to her.”

“Tomorrow with any luck, I can give it to her if you’d like.”

“That would be great, thanks Gracie.”

“Ronnie, can I ask you a question please?” I say, biting the bullet and getting on with it.

“Sure, what is it love?” She glances back down at her folder, uninterested.

“Oh, well, who did the DNA they found on Paul’s body belong to?”

“You really do your homework don’t you? Well, I’ll show you. She’s on the list here somewhere. Her name’s Angelica Walters but, the thing is, she died. We can’t work out how her DNA got on Paul. I suspect her belongings were given to charity, the killer got hold of them and transferred her DNA onto Paul’s belongings. I’m looking into it but I’m sure she’s got nothing to do with it.” Ronnie shrugs, handing me a sheet of paper.

I look down at it, eyes looking at the information though there is no picture.

Name: Angelica Walters

D.O.B: 14/01/83

D.O.D: 27/06/03 (20 years old)

Cause: Car crash, parents killed.

Last known whereabouts: Yorkshire.

Relatives: None Known.

Spouse: Engaged to Johnny Fitzpatrick

Occupation: Unemployed

Notes: Walters was killed as a result of a car crash that killed her parents also. No body was thought to have survived but there was once a rumour of a sister. Nothing was ever confirmed. The deaths were treated as suspicious as Walters’ fiancée (Johnny Fitzpatrick) was arrested. He was charged with murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. If Fitzpatrick knows anything about Walters, he will speak once he is told she was pregnant. This has never been mentioned and, in the event of speaking to him, copies of the pregnancy scan can be obtained from the NHS using the NHS number: 3462780257138394.

I look up at Ronnie. She isn't watching me and I slowly fold up the piece of paper, sliding it into my jacket pocket. I take another thick file and noticed ‘CONFIDENTIAL’ stamped at the top.

“Um, Ronnie, am I allowed to look at this?” I enquire, as much as I need to get the job done, I also like Ronnie and I don’t want to get her in trouble.

“Sure sweetie. You said you had an all access information card, read all the files as much as you want. I thank her and look down and consult my watch. I’m shocked when I notice the little hands have made their way round to the little ‘8’.

“Shit.” I curse, causing Ronnie to glance up sharply.

“Ronnie, I’m sorry. I have to go. My um…my hotel shuts at 8:20 and I need to get back so I don’t get locked out.” I say, quickly thinking up a lie. “Is there any way I can take this with me and read it at home? I can bring it back.” I chew my lip nervously.

“Not a problem. Just make sure I have it back, it’s an important file. Tell you what, give me your email address and I’ll send you the e-copies right now.” She grins up at me with a beaming smile.

“Gosh, thanks Ronnie. Here, it’s 'intergalactica4657@yahoo.com’.” I’m embarrassed when I tell her my email, the same one I’ve had since a child.

She laughs it off though, tapping something into the computer next to her. “Done, you can access them from your hotel room now. Give me an email sometime between now and tomorrow, just let me know you got them alright!”

“Thanks Ronnie, I owe you one.” I grin at her.

“No you don’t. Now go, or you’ll be late!” I thank her again and dash outside.

I run through the complex to the front of the venue, past the security guards who tilt their heads towards me as I pass and run to where Niall and Liam stand, looking worried.

“Where have you been?” Niall demands. “We thought something had happened to you! We were going to come and find you!”

“Chill Ni! I’m fine, and I have some amazing news.” I grin at them both.

“What is it Kayleigh? We got some very useful information but we’ll tell you all about that when we get back to the hotel. For now, what’s your good news?” Liam asks gently, as we begin to walk home. Huh, funny how I’ve started to call a meagre hotel suit ‘home’.

“Well, I got a full profile on the girl whose DNA was found on Paul’s body,” I begin, watching the ecstatic smiles slowly spread across the boys’ faces “but that’s not all. I’ve also got this CONFIDENTIAL folder and all of the files they have on the case emailed to me.” I place a heavy emphasis on the word confidential and turn to look at each boy’s face in turn. I can’t contain my delight.

“But….but…but how Kayleigh? Well that makes what we found out look like dog crap. You are an astounding woman! Right Li?” Niall splutters.

“True that. How the hell Kayleigh? Jesus, all we found out was that the meeting they held was focused on the events leading up to Paul’s death. One of the officer’s gave us his notes. How the hell did you get somebody to trust you that well?” Liam shakes his head in amazement.

“It’s quite worrying, actually, that I can lie that well. I apparently have quite the talent. But the woman I took this from was really nice so I have to make sure I get this back to her, I wouldn’t want to get her in trouble.” I shrug.

“Well, Harry called. The police have a new prime suspect apparently. They say Tessa Dale had something to do with it.” Niall says. “You know who she is?”

I stop dead in the freezing cold night, not even bothered about the nasty chill biting at me. “Did, did you just day Tessa Dale, Niall?” I ask.

“Yes, why?”

”Oh my god. I can see that actually. Lou and I were with Tessa that night. They both had to get back to their jobs but Lou eventually came back, Tessa didn’t. She’s head of marketing for you guys and she had a bit of a bust up with Paul last week. Apparently something to do with him finding Harry kissing somebody that wasn’t his girlfriend last year. Anyway, Tessa was going on and on about how Paul was being absolutely stupid and that we had to continue with the campaign she was doing for you all. Oh my god, I can’t believe it. Tessa is a really close friend. But she’s a big girl, she could easily overpower Paul. Oh my god, oh my god.” I start pacing. “Why didn’t I tell the police Tessa was with us that night?”

“Wait, you didn’t tell the police that?” Liam asked, his eyes wide.

I shake my head. “No, I didn’t think it mattered all that much.”
Niall walked over to me and placed a comforting arm around my shoulders.

“Hush Kayleigh. It’s alright.” He brings me into his chest. “Look at it this way, if the police prove this Tessa girl was involved, at least Paul gets justice.”

I nod, too numb to speak because I know in my heart Tessa had something to do with this. I slowly come to realise one, small fact. I can’t trust anybody.
