The Night It All Went Down

Chapter 21

I didn't know where I woke up.

Four walls towered around me, grey stone filling my limited vision as my blurred eyesight adjusted to the gloom.

It wasn't much of a room - there were no furnishings, no decorations and no windows. It was, essentially, a cell.

It reminded me of the police station.

My back ached as I slowly stirred from my slumber, wriggling my toes in my shoes as I drew in each breath with measured caution. They came in raspy gasps, each one more painful than the last, but my bruised lungs were grateful for any and all oxygen that entered them as they struggled to oxygenate my blood. I was trapped in a dizzying world where I fought between conciousness and death and for a moment, all of my energy was concentrated on bringing myself back from the brink as I forced air into my body.

It may have been hours, or it could have been only minutes, but I knew that I had to get up off the cold ground and work out where I was. If only for the sake of my sanity.

I drew in a large breath and stumbled to a sitting position, using my shackled hands to prop my body up. My hands were bound in cold metal that bit into my pale skin and I could see the red patches creeping up my arms as the too-tight binds were poisoning my skin.

Because, of course, they were silver.

I bit my lip, holding in a grunt of pain. I hadn't noticed just how much it hurt for the native metal to touch my skin, but it just added another layer of ache to my already exhausted body. I could, of course, use my one time ability to overcome its effects - but that would probably be a waste.

I shut my eyes and paused for a moment, tugging on the restraints in spite of how much my body screamed in protest. They were short and, I realised as I re-entered the world, attached to a metal ring in the centre of the room. There would be no running or moving for me.

I sat for a moment, taking in my surroundings with my newly acclimatised sight. Creeping up the opposite wall was an entanglement of ivy, climbing the stone brick work to the heightened ceiling, where it simply stopped and ceased to advance any further. Odd, I thought, considering ivy usually needed light and moisture to grow.

Indeed, the strange things didn't end there. Rust edged the corners of the room, out of place and glaringly obvious as I recoiled from the smell of a dead rat also inhabiting that space. Iron bars formed a cage around a portion of the right hand wall and a single, unlit torch hung from a flaky pole on the left. It wasn't much of a comfort, but the possibility of light warmed my heart, similar to the feeling I got when I thought of Niall.

Niall.

Where was he? He'd been with me as I chased the stranger? Where was he? Was he okay? Had they hurt him? Or were they biding their time?

I tried to reach out to him with my mind, but it occurred to me that there was some sort of a block, filled with swirling colours, that prevented me from getting to him. It unnerved me, having gotten used to having his voice in my head for so long, and I didn't like the idea that these people that had taken us knew enough about us to stop our abilities from manifesting.

Unless. Could they have something to do with Anni? Was it possible they'd created us? And therefore knew what we could do?

"Obviously, Kayleigh, you bloody idiot!" I thought, rolling my eyes in the darkness. "If they didn't know what you could do, they wouldn't have blocked you from talking with Niall!"

My head swam with countless thoughts, unable to form a coherent order as I tried to think clearly through the fog that had erupted in my mind. Damn it.

I bit my lip and sighed loudly. It was almost enough to mask the slight click that came from behind me.

I swung my head towards the ceiling behind me, searching through the inky blackness for the source of the noise.

There. Blinking. It was a small red dot, attached to a device I couldn't quite make out. It had to be a camera - which meant that they were watching me, whether I liked it or not. So presumably, that meant they were also studying me, seeing how I'd react, taking notes on my emotions, on my functions. Heck, they were probably monitoring my vitals as well.

I buried my face in my hands, allowing fleeting worries to cross my plagued mind. It occurred to me then, sitting in a complete void of nothingness, that they weren't going to kill me. They weren't going to kill Niall either - not if they wanted to study us anyway. Which also meant it was unlikely whoever these people were, they weren't going to starve or harm me in anyway. It'd send Niall mad, and they couldn't have unnecessary emotions clogging up their research.

It was then that I saw the outline of a door illuminated in yellow light. I hadn't noticed it before, because it had been too dull to make out anything other than simple shapes. But it was definitely there, silhouetted and bathed in a stagnant wash of colour. Perhaps they were going to let me go.

I scoffed the instant the possibility bubbled up.

The door creaked on its hinges, as the rusty handle turned and released the catch in the lock. You didn't need a degree to know somebody needed to talk to me.

The impatient sound of high heels tapping against the stone floor intrigued me as I squinted in shock against the sudden invasion of the world. I could hear them approaching, yet the doorway remained empty.

Suddenly, the woman I'd been waiting for appeared.

Dressed in a beige, cotton pant suit, accentuated with black patent stilettos and a clipboard darker than night, off set with a mocking smirk, she strode in. Blonde curls bouncing as she walked, the unknown lady entered my cell, flanked my three guards each armed with hefty firearms. I presumed they were filled with silver bullets.

Her features wrinkled as she approached me, and I took satisfaction in knowing the conditions she'd kept me in for the past god-only-knew how many days disgusted her. I tried not to let the pleasure show on my face, but I couldn't help the small smile that tugged at the corners of my lips.

"Kayleigh Michaels?" The lady asked, arching a filled in, blonde eyebrow "Melissa Carlisle, I'll be overseeing the operations." She held out a perfectly manicured hand, her french polish out of place against the backdrop.

"What operations?" I asked cautiously, ignoring her outstretched arms and instead adopting a glare.

"You'll see." Melissa shrugged, retracting her hand back to rest on her clipboard. "Before any of that, you have an appointment to speak to Dr Harvey about some of the processes we do here. He'll answer any questions you may have, as I really don't have time to do so at the moment."

I frowned at her and narrowed my eyes, not trusting her one bit. "Gerry," she called over her shoulder "unlock her. We have work to do." A large man pushed his way forward, his stature bold and unforgiving, his grin menacing and alive with evil.

"Wait a minute." I snapped, throwing my bound hands behind my back and trying not to wince from the infliction of pain. "Where's Niall? I have a right to know!"

"Ugh, you Gammies. Honestly, you can't be separated for even a second." Melissa huffed. Even though I couldn't see her properly, I would bet my life she rolled her eyes. To be fair, that was what I was doing anyway.

"I doubt it's been a second, Carlisle, probably more like weeks. But sure, let's go with seconds. Because that's so much better."

"Shut up. I don't need your smartass comments. Gerry, hurry up!" Melissa tapped her heel against the flagstone as Gerry knelt down beside me and slid a key into my restraints. I was glad of the momentary reprieve of the pain.

Gerry dragged me to my feet and flung me out of the door, placing the barrel of the gun against my back. "Move," he grunted, with all the intelligence of an ape.

"Where are we going?" I mustered as much courage as I could, forcing bravery into those few words.

"Put it this way," Melissa replied "you'll be begging to go back to your cell."
