The Night It All Went Down

Chapter 13

Nevie smiled at me, rubbed my arm and turned down the opposite corridor, leaving me standing alone outside my room. So. I'd, with any luck, be flying with the boys. As fun as that sounded, I knew it would be quite uncomfortable; especially since Niall and Lou were the only ones who had seen me have a panic attack due to flying and heights.

Mentally, I shook myself, determined to do this. After all, life's all about new experiences and if this flying ability was here to stay, I had to get used to heights. I flashed my key card against the door and walked in, grabbing my already packed suitcase from beneath the bed. I began to straighten the room up, ensuring that the bed was nearly made and that I hadn't left tissues or packets of food everywhere like I was so used to doing at home.

When I was satisfied everywhere was clean and that there was nothing else I could do to make it cleaner, I fell onto a chair near the desk and absent mindedly began to play with my hair. I was really confused and worried about my new found 'abilities' - it wasn't every day that you found out you could fly. I also had no idea whether I possessed any other 'powers' and I supposed I did need to know.

Slowly, I stood up. I walked into the middle of the room, making sure to close the curtains as I passed. There was still a large amount of people out there and there was no need to expose this to everyone just yet. I decided it was probably best to work on the flying part first, knowing that was the biggest problem I had. How had I started flying before? I wondered to myself. I certainly hadn't known I was doing it, my mind had been all over the place.

"Up." I said, expecting myself to lift upwards. Nothing happened.

"Fly." I tried again. Still nothing happened.

"Lift." I was beginning to get frustrated.

Fourteen different words later, I threw myself back onto the bed. This was ridiculous, maybe I'd just imagined the whole thing. But all five guys had seen it so I knew I wasn't going crazy. Suddenly, a small voice began to grow in the back of my mind, like the one I'd listened to to get back to the ground after flying to the ceiling.

"Take things slowly. I'll guide you. Imagine Niall lifting you upwards or think about his amazing achievements. That's what got you up last time." The voice says, its gravelly undertones apparent as it instructed me. What confused me the most was what Niall had to do with all of this but I went with it even so.

"Okay." I murmured, balling my hands into fists at the side of my body. I thought about when Niall had lifted me up and thrown me over his shoulder barely four hours ago. I thought about when he'd lifted me up so I could reach a top when I was styling them before a concert. Happy memories.

Slowly I felt myself rising upwards, I opened my eyes and saw I was just floating in mid air. I let out a small gasp and tried to twist myself around but found I couldn't. It was like I was chained. I struggled against it but still couldn't move around- why?

"Niall. Imagine he's twisting you around or pulling you in the direction you want to go in." The voice spoke up helpfully. As soon as an image of Niall pulling me everywhere entered into my mind, my body began to zip around everywhere, tossing me around like a bag of Salt 'n' Shake.

"Whoa whoa whoa. Slow your roll bucko! Imagine Niall pulling you slowly." The voice placed emphasis on the word slowly and I changed the image in my mind, altering my speed and slowing down dramatically.

"Wow." I breathed, manipulating images of Niall in my mind so that I could play around with my new found ability.

The voice laughed slightly. "That's it! Now try imagining Niall helping you do a role poly." It suggested.
I did just that and I ended up doing a loop 'd' loop in the air, my body contorting in ways I didn't think possible.

"How am I able to do that?" I let out a breath of air and look around me, amazed.

"Do you want to know what else you can do?" The voice seemed to be fading now and I mentally tried to reach it.

"Yes, yes I do." I thought in reply.

"Okay. Attached to the implanted DNA strand that causes the flying, there are three other abilities that you should be able to use as much as you like and one which you can only use once."

"So, I have implanted DNA in me?"

"Yes."

"Does that mean Niall has implanted DNA too?"

"No. The bullet missed him. He gets it from you."

"How?" I asked astounded.

"It's too complicated to get into now. Why don't you ask Zayn? I'm fairly certain he's worked it out."

'Okay, so tell me about these other abilities." I suddenly realised I was talking to something inside my head. Was I becoming schizophrenic or something?

"No, you're not becoming schizophrenic. I'll only be here while you settle into using your abilities. Now, the first one we're going to look at is your ability to heal yourself."

"I can heal myself?" Jesus, this day was making my head spin.

"Yes, your body does it naturally. Like when you were shot, the hole was there for roughly thirty minutes yes? Now most people would have died due to bleeding out but your healing ability stopped it from allowing too much blood to get out." The voice explained.

"So that's why the doctor only found a splinter."

"Yes. When your body finds a foreign object, it turns it into a splinter- something very easy to remove."

"So what are the other three powers?"

"Never refer to them as powers. It would be more accurate to refer to them as curses because powers lead to corruption. You second ability is a little less subtle than being able to heal yourself. You can turn your body invisible for a maximum of two minutes."

"I can? That is so awesome!"

"Most people pass out when they first hear me talking- nobody's ever said that their powers were cool before." The voice chuckled heartily.

"So how do I turn myself invisible?" I asked, excitedly. My worries about what having these abilities meant just melting away.

"It's quite simple to do really just-" but the voice suddenly got interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Kayleigh? You in there?" Zayn's deep voice asks through the door.

"Yeah." I called. "Give me a second, I'll open the door in a moment." I checked to make sure I hadn't messed the room up and ran over to the door whenever I'd managed to decide everything was fine.

I turned the handle and heard the lock click out of place, pulling the thin MDF door out of its frame to reveal Zayn standing there with a massive grin plastered across his features. He resembled something from Twilight because he was simply just leaning up against the door frame, very nonchalantly, and looked very laid back.

"Can I help you?" I asked, my eyebrow slowly rising upwards.

"I've got amazing news!" He proclaimed. "About that." He motioned towards my back and I assumed that he must have meant the tattoo. Ahh yes, that thing. If he knew anything about it, then I wasn't going to stop him from telling me. I wasn't kidding when I said I was exceptionally stressed about it.

"Come in." I wave my hand and move over to the window, snatching a chair for him to sit down on while I collapse onto the bed. "So, whatcha got?" I'm crazily curious and desperately want to know what he's worked out but he seems to just be biding his time.

"Well, take a look at this." He pulls his phone from his back pocket and loaded up the webpage we'd all been looking at earlier. I furrowed my brow and looked more carefully at the photograph. There wasn't anything different about it and all I could see clearly was the scrawny cat climbing into the bin and the prominent tattoo on its back.

"So? That's just the picture Liam showed us earlier. There's nothing different about it." I tell him, unable to grasp what he wanted me to look at

"Look closely Kayleigh, what do you see." He encourages me.

I narrow my eyes and squint, staring at the grainy picture and attempting to work out what Zayn was trying to show me, but there was nothing new there. At least, nothing obvious anyway. Then something in the background caught my eye. I looked intently at the screen, making out nine tiny kittens sitting against the wall and looking to be in an extremely sorry state. Yet despite all of that, they looked very cute.

"So they're cute kittens. What's that got to do with me?" I question still not able to comprehend his intended gist.

Zayn sighed dramatically, clearly frustrated that I wasn't picking up on what he was trying to surreptitiously tell me.

"How many pairs of XXs and XYs are there Kayleigh?" Zayn asked me, pinching the bridge of his nose in annoyance.

"Nine....." I said slowly.

"And how many kittens are there?" He continued, coaxing me along.

"Nine.....oh my god." I said, slowly bringing my hands up to rest on my cheeks. "H...how?" I splutter.

"How can it know? No idea. But according to this and the markings you've got on your back, you're going to have three kids. One girl and two boys. Congratulations!" Zayn beamed at me, looking extremely proud of me.

"Who with?" I asked him, gnawing my lip.

"Well that's the tricky part......." He trailed. "But I think it's got something to do with the other word on your back. Matched."

Stepping out of the park and ride onto the black, hot tarmac was quite a contrast to waiting in the departures lounge for hours on end until a flight came in. Carry on in hand, I cautiously followed the boys to the waiting aeroplane which was parked on the other side of the lane. Men in bright luminous jackets busied themselves with their jobs that they had to undertake before the plane took off. One held two paddles and was directing others and another was taking our suitcases from a trolley and loading them in.

I stopped when we got to the edge of the steps fixed to the door and looked up, anxious about boarding the plane. It towered well above me and I gulped as I spotted the air hostess peeking out of the window. When she saw us all standing waiting, she straightened her jacket and strode down the aisle, reaching the door and swinging it wide open.

"Mr Styles, Mr Malik, Mr Horan, Mr Payne and Mr Tomlinson. Welcome back." She acknowledges us all and throws a friendly wink my way to let me know she hasn't forgotten me.

"I don't believe we met, I'm Carrie, the flight attendant for Mr Cowell and the boys when they use the plane." She extends a hand with perfectly manicured nails towards me.

"I'm Kayleigh." I smile back, shaking her hand. "Kayleigh Michaels." All of a sudden, her beaming smile shrinks a little and she takes a tiny step back from me. So she's heard what I'm accused of then. Lucky her.

"Well, Miss Michaels, I hope you find everything satisfactory on the flight." She eyes me warily before turning to address us as a group. "The captain and copilot believe time spent in the air will not be any longer than 45 minutes. We aim to touch down in Heathrow at around 7:50 am and we have it on good authority that you shall be collected at the other side."

Carrie finishes her speech and clasps her hands in front of her body.

"Thank you Carrie. I'm sure everything shall be lovely." Niall gave her his most polite smile and she began to head up the stairs.

Niall leaned in so he was level with my ear and then I noticed his fingers had been laced with mine the whole time, a fact Carrie clearly hadn't failed to notice.

"Don't be sad about her. Like you thought, she's probably heard about what happened but who gives a damn." He grinned at me and I burst into laughter, spluttering at his comical expression.

He led me up the steps and guided me onto the plane. I had to stifle a gasp as I rounded the corner and took in the sight of the plane laid out before me. Plush, cream, leather seats were scattered around and mahogany desks were provided if somebody needed to work. Seat belts across the lap were a pure white and at the back there was a large fridge and food preparation area with a variety of ingredients lined up. Oh how the rich live.

I took a seat opposite Niall, who had settled himself in comfortably, and shelved my carry on above us. A forty five minute flight wasn't so bad was it? I was sure I could survive it. The window was almost like a port hole in a ship and I looked out of it, curious as to what lay inside the airport. It wasn't as if I hadn't been on a plane before, with my job I travelled all over the world. Countless pages and stamps had been added to my passport and my app called 'Been' had turned completely orange as it documented each country I had travelled to. But I still had a fear of flying and heights. Oh sweet Jesus I was toast wasn't I?

Niall spotted me shaking and gave me a supportive smile before turning back to his phone to carry on texting. I glanced around the rest of the plane and saw Louis playing on his PSP, Zayn reading one of my favourite books, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, Liam tweeting and Harry pulling a blanket round himself. As I was about to try and busy myself with something to distract me, a loud voice came over the speaker system.

"Good morning. We're about to take off, please fasten your seat belts. The sky's looking clear today, so very few bumps, and the temperature in London is a hearty 13 degrees centigrade. Have a good flight." The pilot said cheerily.

I gulped and gripped the arm rest until my knuckles turned a deathly white. I felt us speeding down the runway ready to take off and I started breathing heavily, causing the boys to look around in surprise. I knew I'd be fine once we were in the air and I'd shut the window blind but right now, taking off, I was panicking. Niall moved his hand to rest on my knee as I squeezed my eyes tightly shut and felt the plane leave the runway.

When we levelled out, I slowly opened one eye and then the other, moving my hand quickly to the window blind and fumbling for the lever to lower it. I looked at the boys who were trying to contain their laughter and I shook my head.

"I didn't know you were afraid of planes, Kayleigh." Louis commented.

"Well, I don't like heights and a plane does travel pretty high," I rolled my eyes.

"But you're perfectly safe!" Liam exclaimed, looking taken aback.

"Famous last words." I scoffed in return.

The rest of the plane ride was pretty relaxing as I simply switched on my phone and plugged my headphones in, enjoying listening to U2, The Goo Goo Dolls and Imagine Dragons. If I was being completely honest, I would say that pop's not really my thing. I'm not a massive fan of the boys' music, sure I don't mind it but I'm not completely mad over it. I just think pop's quite a generic genre of music and that not many people really appreciate the different choices of music out there. The guys, El, Perrie, Sophia and Marissa have all teased me over it but it's true. You can shoot me if you want, it turns out I'll just heal myself anyway.

When the pilot announces we're about to touch down, I fly back to my seat (that I managed to vacate during the flight for the first time in my life) and buckle in, not looking forward to it. It was actually better than I originally expected it to be and we were soon disembarking and saying our goodbyes to Carrie.

We entered the terminal and collected our bags, quickly moving through the almost empty building and entering the arrivals gate. After security had checked our passports and searched us, we were allowed through. We knew the security team wouldn't be here in time to collect us so it was now simply a matter of looking around for somebody that we knew. Marissa had offered to come and collect us with El, though I hadn't told Louis as El wanted it to be a surprise, so I kept an eye out for them.

Suddenly, my eyes landed on a very very sparkly and glittery sign with the words 'Kayleigh Michaels- Over Here!' on it. I looked up at El's face and started racing towards her, making the boys look confused.

"El!" I screamed as I rushed towards her "How are ya?" She engulfs me in a massive bear hug, her beanie sliding off her brown hair and onto the floor.

"I'm good thanks. What about you?" She grins as I step back and retrieve her hat for her.

"I'm as good as good as an accused murderer can be expected to be!" I reply, laughing.

"Good to see you're not-" but El was cut off by Louis who pressed a passionate kiss to her lips.

"Eww!" I squealed "PDA! Gross!" But I smiled because it didn't really bother me. I liked seeing them both so happy.

"Oh come off it Kay!" El laughed, breaking away from Louis. "One day you'll be like this."

"One day. Not today." I grin in return.

A cough behind us shocks us all and we turned around to look at the four remaining boys.

"Are we not good enough for you then?" Niall asks, pretending to look hurt. At least, I think he's pretending.

"Nope!" I say casually before turning to El with a frown. "Where's Marissa? She said she would be coming........" I trailed off. El bit her lip and her eyes turned sympathetic.

"Hun, I'm so sorry. She...um...she said she didn't want to be associated with an accused murderer. I'm really truly sorry." El apologises.

"Huh." I mumbled, casting my eyes downwards. My best friend, who I would do anything for, didn't want to know me because of something I didn't do? That hurt. And it wasn't until El and Niall put their arms around me that I truly comprehended what had happened.

My best friend had practically disowned me. And she hadn't even bothered to ask me my side of things.

YOU

Since leaving Lorna, I've met up with a team of people willing to help me with my investigation. We're planning on putting it together soon.

I know the tattoo will have surfaced by now, it did on me around this time.

The people I'm working with say they have a formula for working out who somebody's Match is. All I have to do is give it to Kayleigh and then, whoever her Match is, will also receive a tattoo, binding them together even further.

KJ-57's effects confuse me. A lot. But I'm hoping everything should become apparent when I work out who Kayleigh's Match is. Then I can start my research.

I wonder how many children she won't have?
