Moving To England

Chapter Thirty-Four

*Destiny’s POV*
*Next Week/Monday*

“We are going to present our project today, remember?” Melody said to the three of us. Zayn and Niall look at one another, as we sat down in our seats in Chemistry class.

“We forgot something … er … at our lockers.” Zayn stuttered.

“Yeah … uh … we’ll be back.” Niall nodded.

“Oh, no you won’t,” I say, sternly, grabbing Niall’s back collar and Melody got a hold of Zayn’s. We pulled them into the class.

“You two aren’t about to chicken out of this,” Melody said.

“Chicken?” Zayn questioned.

“We are not chicken!” Niall exclaimed.

“Then, stop running away from the presentation!” I say as we take our seats.

When our teacher called on us to present our project, we all reluctantly walked up to the front of the classroom. To our surprise, it went better than expected. The boys knew all their lines, and it went by smoothly.

At the end of class, Melody and I raced to our chemistry teacher.

“What are our marks?” I asked eagerly.

“Oh, please do tell us!” Melody begged.

“Alright.” Our teacher chuckled, getting out some papers.

“Well …?” I say anxiously.

“I was particularly pleased with your presentations. The boys did not do as bad as I thought they would!” he smiles.

“What’s our mark, already?!” Melody exclaimed.

“A plus!” he chuckled. “92%.”

“Yes!” Melody and I cheered, high-fiving one another.

We ran outside the class and broke the news to the boys. Huge smiles grew on their faces. They were extremely pleased with their marks, more than Melody and I were.

We headed to our next classes, and Harry walking me to each of mine, this time holding my hand.

As we walked down the halls, many people stared at us, as they whispered some things to their friends. The stares made me feel insecure, causing me to inch closer to Harry, to feel his protection. Although Harry never seemed to notice all the talking and bickering going on around us.

During Literacy class, with Mable and Ally, I received tonnes of hand-written notes from different girls in the class. All of which said something between the lines of:

Girl: I just want to say … I think you and Harry make THE best couple.

Me: lol. Thnx …

Girl: yeah … most of the girls in the school, ship you two.

Me: Wow! Really?

Girl: Yup! You two are just too cute!

The bell rung, and all the students scurried off to their lockers for lunch. Just before the others showed up, I showed Ally and Mable all the notes I was given.

“It’s true.” The two of them laughed.

“I can’t believe, those girls are letting this happen, though!” Ally says.

“Yeah.” Mabel chuckled, “We thought, that they would be upset and jealous.”

“But, fortunately, the cuteness of the two of you took over.” Ally says. I laughed and blushed a bit, at her comment.

“So, how was your morning?” Zayn asked everyone, throwing his arm around Mabel, as she rested her head on Zayn’s shoulder. Everyone met up at our regular lunch table, which included Harry, his friends, as well as mine.

The ten of us were now have grown inseparable over the past month, all of us now becoming a tight-knit friend group. It was that kind of friendship that blooms in the centre of your heart. That sort of friendship that grows from the seed basking in the warm soil to a large tree with many ups and downs. Many, but not enough to disguise the enormity or the grandeur of such a tree, the sheer brilliance and beauty of it.

“So many tests!” Elizabeth groaned, burying her face into Louis’ shoulder.

“Just skip those classes then.” Louis chuckled. Instantly my eyes widened upon hearing the words ‘Skip Class,”.

“No way. If you’re my friend, I ain’t letting you skip no damn class.” I warned them.

“Oh chill, Destiny.” Harry sighs, with a smile putting his arm around my shoulders.

Yanking off his arm, I held on to his hand, “No way. No skipping.” I sternly say.

“Have you actually never done anything out of line before?” Niall chuckled.

“Yeah.” June laughed. “You’re such a massive goody two shoes.”

“What?!” I exclaimed, stuttering a bit. “Pfftt! I have been bad before.”

“Really?” Elizabeth smirked, “What have you done?”

“Uh … well …” I stutter, struggling to search my memories for something that I’ve done that could’ve gotten me in trouble.

‘What’s the point of doing things if you’ll get into trouble in the end? All that fun you had will vanish and be replaced with the punishment that will follow.’ I always thought.

“Well?” Liam smirked, raising an eyebrow.

“Um …” I thought.

Harry put his arm around me, “It is of course so horrible that she can’t say.” He smirked.

“Yes! Exactly!” I exclaim, causing my friends to laugh.

“Alright, someone come with me, I need water. I don’t feel like going alone.” Ally said, getting up from her seat.

“I’ll come.” I offered,

“You would think, making out with Liam, would be enough to satisfy your thirst,” Mable says giggling, as I get up to follow her, I took my juice bottle with me. Ally shot her a death glare, as the rest of us broke into laughter.

“Alright. Alright.” Mable giggled, as she tried to punch her, through her narrowed eyes. Mable threw her hands in the air as a defence.

“You know it’s true.” I laughed, as we made our way to the water fountain. Ally smiled, rolling her eyes.

“Destiny.” Someone called me, as I waited for Ally to take her drink. I turned around to see Amanda glaring at me, with Tia next to her. Amanda’s glare soon transformed into a grin, as her eyes trained on something on my chest.

“Nice vintage necklace you have there.” She said, flashing me a smile.

‘Was she actually being nice to me?’ I thought, with a smile.

“Thanks,” I say, with a smile, as Ally came to my said.

“Yeah, it matches all the granny clothes my grandma wears.” Amanda smiled back, letting out a few sarcastic laughs, Tia let out a shriek of laughter. Suddenly feeling self-conscious I tugged on the gold-black patterned locket, it bore a circle emerald in the centre. It belonged to my late grandmother - my father’s Mum. She had given it to me just before she died. ‘I’ll love you forever, Destiny. Never let anyone get in your way. You’re perfect – absolutely fantastic.’

“Honestly, Amanda, you don’t have to be so mean.” Ally glared at her. Amanda mocked her, as Tia laughed at her friend’s actions. “Let’s just get out of here.” Ally said, tugging on my arm. I followed her back to our table.

“Hold on!” Amanda exclaimed, stopping Ally and me in our tracks. Ally tugged me to the table, telling me to ignore her. She was about to follow us, but her friends came and took her mind of me. Before I sat down, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to be met by my mother’s beautiful facial features.

“Hey, Mum.” I smile at her.

“Hi Honey. I wanted to tell you something. Uh, you father and I forget to tell you this, in the morning.” She says to me. I looked at her in confusion, wondering what she was talking about, as everyone at the table paid attention to our conversation.

“Your father got a call from the school, back in Canada,” Mom exclaimed, with a broad smile.

”What?” I asked confused.

“Yeah, some of your friends wanted to contact you, but they said you forgot to give them your contact information,” Mum explained.

“I don’t remember, forgetting to give anyone my contact information,” I say, as my forehead wrinkled in confusion.

“They asked for our address, and your father gave it to them. They told your Dad that they would be sending you a package. Like a gift.” Mum informed me.

“What were their names?” I asked, completely oblivious.

“Hmm … I can’t really remember …” Mum said, trying to recall the names, “Oh … wait, I am pretty sure one of their names were Victor.”

I took a step back as I soaked in her words. I could feel my face turn pale, and my fingers let go of the juice in my hand, causing it to spill over the floor, but I didn’t really care at the moment. Suddenly, it felt as if a pair of icy cold hands grasped my neck, pressing it – closing it. The desperation of breath took over me, as my vision grew dark and mind went hazy.

“Destiny?” I could hear Harry, asked nervously, getting up and putting a hand on my shoulder.

“D-did you … say … Did you say, Victor? Dad … he … He gave our address to … Victor?” I choked out, as I felt the tears threatening to spill over.

“Destiny, are you okay?’ Mom asked stepping forward to me. Her eyes felt with fear, and worry, as she tried to confront me.

Without thinking twice, I stepped back. “How could you let Dad give Victor our address?” I quietly say, in a tone much ruder than I had intended, staring her in the eyes.

“I didn’t have control over the situation.” Mom says, worried, “Your father told me after he hung up the phone. What’s the big deal if Victor’s your friend?”

The tears were now rolling down my cheeks. Harry grabbed my shoulders pulling me towards him. I jerked myself away from him.

Immediately, I ran out of the lunchroom, ignoring all the voices calling to me, all the eyes that were trained on me. I ran as fast, as my feet could take me far away from the school. I noticed Harry had chased after me but managed to lose track of me at one point. I ran past my home, and on to some unknown street. I began to lose energy, deciding to walk instead.

Thoughts, memories, and emotions bubbled inside of me, flying through my mind at the speed of light.

I was engulfed by:

Fear. The shackles. The knife in the gut which is being slowly twisted. The constant hammer on the head. But also the evaporated water under an early summer sun. An illusion.

Shame. The feeling of worthlessness, being a reject or a cast-out. The belief that one is not loved because they simply are not lovable. The sense that there is nothing they can do to purge its dark and toxic presence.

Flashbacks zoomed in and out of my mind … ‘So, many horrible memories …’ I sighed, as the raw images of my past slowly came to present.

*Flashback*

Destiny sits, in the light of the day, staring out the window of her father’s car. They were driving off to her first day of sixth grade, passing by many houses, while Destiny’s mind drifted off.

She thought of many things, such as: ‘Why are people so happy? How does one find friends? How does one stop crying every night? And, why is it that she, herself, is not happy? How could one, be so miserable? Why did I lose it all?’ She pondered on the answers as the day went by.

Walking through the hallways of Bradford Middle School, she found her way into the lunchroom. Always making sure her head was lowered, she made it sure that she was as invisible as she could be.

To her unfortunate luck, it didn’t quite work. Victor Hayes, Destiny’s bully, walks up to her with his usual smug little smirk. “Hey, Destiny. I like your new get-up, here.” Victor scoffs, “my grandma has the same thing.” He smirks, as he turns to his friends.

It’s not like Destiny has never heard that comment before, but this time it really got to her. She had tried so hard to save up for this new blouse and skirt. She and her family aren't that wealthy. Thus, they don’t enough have clothes to wear, food to eat, and her parents each work two jobs a day. This resulted in Destiny to barely getting to seeing either of them, making it pretty hard on her.

“Why thank you! I love your face.” Destiny says, giving him a big sarcastic smile, “It reminds me of my dead great-grandma, too.”

The shock on his face was priceless, for Destiny. She was happy that she finally got back to him, despite that Destiny still had this anger built up inside of her, a lot of anger. She was hurt, broken, utterly lost and completely alone.

Although, as soon as the words escaped her mouth, she regretted it immediately because soon after, Victor’s shocked facial features turned into an anger expression. Victor balled up his hands. Shoving Destiny onto the walls, Victor threw multiple punches towards her, ensuring to give Destiny severe bruises on her face.

“You. Are. Nothing! Do you understand? You worthless, ugly, fat, poor girl. No one like you, at all!” He spat at Destiny, as he and his friends left her bruised on the ground.

After the boys had disappeared out of sight, she carried her injured body into the washroom. Throwing herself into one of the restroom stalls, Destiny hugged herself, as she moaned in sadness.

‘No one like you, at all! No one like you, at all! No one like you, at all!’ Victor’s words rang through her mind, like a broken record.

Finally gathering herself, she worked at her lunch in the washroom stalls, hoping to avoid her bullies, as well as the rest of the world.

Throughout, the day Destiny was called names, whispered about, and yelled at. All her teachers got mad at her for not paying attention. A usual routine. Then, as usual, Victor would find Destiny at her locker. He shoves the broken girl, into them, as he punches her right in the guts.

“Why do you bully me?” Destiny cried, as he punched her in the stomach. After Victor had gotten bored of injury her, Destiny grabbed her things and bolted to her empty house.

Sprinting into her washroom, she yanked out the razor hidden underneath a pile of unopened boxes of soap bars. Destiny tugged her sleeve upward, revealing previously made scars and cut.

She pressed the razor to her skin …
