Chapter 3

Chapter Playlist: Tee Shirt by Birdy

The entire school was now wrapped up in what had happened between Melody and Cassie. The cafeteria had been bustling with conversation the moment Harry had decided to leave. The witnesses before whom the entire incident took place were either engaged in discussing their own versions and theories, or they were busy sending their friends, who had the misfortune of missing such a juicy bit of gossip, the video of Melody getting slapped via Snapchat or other social medias.

By the end of the day, Nora was sure she had heard fifty different versions of the event that she had witnessed from six feet away. The worst had to be someone swearing that he had seen Melody offer her services at the brothel in the neighboring town. Nora had just about refrained herself from asking him what he was doing at a brothel, considering he came from one of those strict Catholic families.

If this wasn't bad enough, there was a rumor going around the school that since Cassie lost her best 'wing man', she was searching for a new candidate to take up Melody's place. Girls from all the different cliques, including goths and nerds, had found an incredible opportunity before them. It was their one and only chance to change their social life forever. So, the conversations had slowly steered towards who would get the post of the Queen Bee's new right-hand man.

"Just you watch, Lily, I'm gonna slay all those idiots who think they have what it takes to be Cassie's number two!" Beth announced as they made their way to her place. "I mean, can you believe it? Fat Hannah actually thinks she has the chance of getting in the B&Ks!"

"I can't believe you've already began impersonating them by adapting that nasty, petty attitude of judging others below you!" Lily commented bluntly, choosing to ignore the gasp that left both Nora's and Beth's mouth. Beth opened and closed her mouth like a fish, looked at Nora for a second in mortification before keeping her head low and continuing to head towards her house.

Nora didn't have a shift today at the store that she worked in, but she wasn't feeling up to going to Beth's place and hearing more about the Cas and Mel fight. Plus she knew that she would find her mother weep if she returned home. So, she decided to excuse herself by telling her friends that she had just remembered that she had something to do at work and promised to meet them as soon as she was done.

She began walking towards a direction very familiar to her. A path she had grown to love and look forward to. The buildings began to thin as the green of the trees and meadow engulfed the surroundings. The sunlight peeked between the spaces between the leaves, illuminating the cobble-stoned pathway that had begun as the asphalt paved road ended. Nora began humming a tune as she heard the birds chirp; a sense of serenity enveloped her.

The smile on her face was unswerving and she knew that she could blank out her mind completely now that she was a away from the hellhole. She began changing her track and now marched down the meadow towards the brook. As she reached, she took off her shoes and folded up her jeans, only to slowly dip her feet into the surface of the brook.

It was pure bliss as the cool water caressed her feet like a passionate lover. Nora found herself lying down on the meadow and closing her eyes while her feet soaked in the water. It was comforting to have somewhere to run away to and not dwell over all the troubles.

Nora was drifting off to sleep when she heard a blood curdling shriek that had her sitting back up and looking around for the source. She heard someone cry out for help from the direction of the small cliff in the distant. Without sparing a second's thought, Nora sprinted towards that direction. Was someone in trouble? Had they gotten their legs stuck under one of the many ditches near the cliff?

She swiftly jumped over a log and almost tripped over a thick root as she rounded the corner of the path which led to the cliff. Her heart stopped when she saw a girl hanging on to a thick branch at the edge of the cliff, about fifty feet above the stream. The girl had probably slipped on a rock and had managed to grab the thick branch just in time to break her fall. Nora broke free from the initial shock when she heard the girl let out another scream.

She looked around for something to help her save the girl and was grateful when she quickly spotted a vine. Ensuring that the vine was tied properly around a tree, Nora began lowering it to the girl.

"Grab this! Hurry! The branch looks like it could give in any time!" She shouted as the girl looked up and began howling and weeping for help again. "C'mon! Just grab this!"

The girl came to her senses when she noticed the vine being lowered to her and cautiously she grabbed it with one hand while keeping the other wrapped around the branch.

"That's good! You're doing great! Now grab it with your other hand so that I can pull you up."

Slowly the girl let go off the branch and grabbed the vine tightly with her second hand, wrapping her legs around it quickly so she that she didn't fall. Nora began to pull but it was harder now because of the girl's weight. She wished she had eaten something which would give her more energy as she pulled with all her body weight.

She felt the vine slowly move upwards and just as she caught sight of the girl's head near the edge, she offered her hand. The girl grabbed it with one hand and grabbed a nearby boulder, hoisted herself up and then dropped on the leafy ground. Nora and the girl both heaved in deep breaths as they sat side by side with their eyes closed. Nora opened it after a minute to see if the girl was alright but what she saw made her hands turn clammy. Sitting across from her was the girl who the entire school was busy talking about today; who had lost her place as the Queen Bee's wing-man. It was none other than Melody Smith.
