fourteen

“Oh my god Perrie,” I whispered, not taking my eyes off of her. My stomach was twisting and my throat was now dry.

“Jesus,” Harry grimaced, I felt his hand squeeze mine a little bit tighter, and he pulled me into his side.

“This is our prize?” I said, feeling a rush of anger and sadness wash over me.

Harry was no longer looking at Perrie, instead he had tugged me further into the room and over to the whiteboard, “I think that is our prize.”

'Choose your friends carefully'

I swallowed the giant lump in my throat, and never tore my eyes off of the four words written in big black marker. I was transfixed by them, it was like they were screaming at me.

“Do you think Alyssa’s alive?” I ask.

Harry shook his head, “I don’t know, but I’m guessing that message is about her.” I didn’t need to nod or voice the fact that I was completely on the same page as him. Perrie had chosen to stay loyal to Alyssa, and it got her killed. She didn’t choose her friends carefully, and I’m sure wherever she was now, she was surely regretting it.

“We need to get out of here.” Harry says, and I took the first step.. hell I didn’t need to be told twice.

We sprinted out of the room, almost running right past the nurses office before remembering the reason why we came back up here in the first place.. for that damn laptop. Harry dragged me in the office with him and he snatched the laptop from the counter. We bolted towards the stairs, then towards the doors to the main hall.

We almost fell over each other when we reached the doors, I was the first to go in with Harry right on my tail. He slammed the doors shut and the two of us leaned against the back of them, trying to catch our breath. Six sets of eyes were staring at us, and after a few seconds the six sets of eyes were no longer staring at our faces, but they were on our hands, which were still still gripping each other like our lives depended on it. I quickly pulled my hand out of his, and avoided our friends curious, and dumbfounded expressions because Mia and Harry were infact holding hands.

“Did we miss something?” Callie asks, sounding beyond amused.

“Don’t even look at me like that, I just ran more than I have in the past year from the third floor after coming from playing some fucked up game of murder monopoly, so do not start with me Callista.” I yelled.

“Perrie’s dead.” Harry announced, which seemed to get everyone’s minds off of the fact we were holding hands.

“No way.” Liam says in disbelief.

Harry nodded, “Yeah, she’s on the second floor, we found her in one of the classroom’s drenched in blood.”

“Was Alyssa there?” Dax asks.

“No, but the sick fuck did leave a message on the board.” He says, “Choose your friends carefully.”

“Was that the message or are you just passing on words of wisdom?” Niall cuts in.

“That was the message you stupid di-”

“Do you guys think it’s Alyssa?” Liam was looking between everyone, waiting for someone to answer him. I recoiled slightly, thinking over his words. Honestly, the thought never crossed my mind.. only because Alyssa wouldn’t have something like that in her. I mean earlier when we were waiting for the teachers, she complained three times about the blood stain on her new white jeans.

“Alyssa? No way.. that girl couldn’t arrange a heart attack for the morbidly obese, you really think she could plan something like this?” Callie laughed.

Liam shrugged, thinking for another minute, “Maybe it isn’t only her.. maybe there’s two people involved. The other one could have been the one to plan it all.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Alyssa was here when Miles was killed, so that couldn’t have been her.. but it was pretty handy how she completely flipped on brother Styles over there and walked out of here without a fear in the world, and she drug Perrie with her.” He explained. Was Alyssa really that stupid that she didn’t even think about the dangers of two little girls, in stilettos walking out there on their own? Or did she have nothing to worry about because there wasn’t any real danger for her?

Choose your friends carefully.. maybe that wasn’t someone making that comment about Perrie, maybe it was Alyssa herself.

“Alyssa? Alyssa Brown?” Mr. Clark groaned, and suddenly everyone realized he was back with us. He looked rough though, his eyes were still closed and one of his hands was holding the back of his head. After a minute or two, he pushed himself up and took a good look at everyone, “That girl once asked me if Shakespeare was the name of a Greek restaurant.”

“I’m just saying, I mean what are the chances that all of this has been done by one person?” We all stayed quiet, because once again Liam was right. One person sure as hell couldn’t do all of this.. could they? If that’s the case then kudos to them, I’m impressed, but I highly doubt it. If Liam was right about this, then we had a more worrying thought that someone who had been sitting with us for the majority of the night was in on killing us all off.

Everybody froze when a sudden noise started buzzing through the laptop. It was so loud and shocking, I ended up dropping it on the floor. The screen was no longer black, and it didn’t have creepy messages on it anymore, but it did have the colorful view on it like your tv gets when the signal is lost.. or the beginning of a McFly video. I started to seriously pray that the next image on the screen would be four hot guys singing to me about some bitch with crazy hair.

Of course with our luck tonight, the next image that appeared on the screen wasn’t four hot guys.. and there definitely wasn’t any singing. It was nothing like that. The next image that appeared on the screen was a girl, sitting on a chair, hands tied behind her back, and hair matted with blood. The sound of her hysterical pleads coming through the laptop was the only sound in the hall, and once everyone heard, they rushed over.

“Please, don’t hurt me.. please,” Alyssa was full on screaming at the top of her lungs.. I’m surprised we can’t hear her from wherever she is in the school. I shook my head at the state of her white jeans, because no matter how many trips she took to the dry cleaner she took, nothing was going to save them. I could only imagine if she wasn’t tied to a chair right now, how batshit crazy she would be going.

Well, there goes Liam’s theory about her out the window.

Metaphorically speaking of course, because nothing would be getting out of these windows unless it had the strength of an eighteen-wheeler.semi-trailer truck.

Have you ever experienced a moment where you know you shouldn’t do something, but there is something inside of you making it unable to stop? For instance, if any one of my friends were to be in a porn video, every ounce of my being would be disgusted and probably scarred for life.. but I know I wouldn’t be able to stop watching it.

Well that was the situation that we were in right now. Everyone knew that we were not going to like whatever was going to happen next, and it would probably to some lasting damage mentally, but nobody was going to be tearing their eyes away.. and that was not because we were going to enjoy it. I mean Alyssa was a bitch, yeah.. but it’s not like anyone wants to see her bloodied up and tied to a chair, but it was because we were in some sort of trance.. like we were frozen.

“Please stop-” Alyssa cried desperately, looking at something we couldn’t see.. or better yet someone we couldn’t see, “-just let me go, please, I’ll do anything,” I for one, was not this girls biggest fan, but watching her like that made me want to just reach out and help her anyway I could.

“What do we do?” Callie asks, and I didn’t have to look around to see everyone’s clueless expressions, because nobody was going to know. I tried looking at the setting behind her, and she was clearly still in the school.

“I can’t tell what room she’s in,” I say, and look over to Harry who was nodding. I mean really, every classroom in this school looks the same to me- or us.. a prison cell with a whiteboard.

“Maybe if a few of us start looking?” Dax suggested, and the way Harry’s expression lit up with determination tells me he agreed with his brother.

“There are four floors to check, we would never reach her in time.” Ms. Roberts spoke up, and I couldn’t help but to agree with her. I know I said I wanted to do whatever I could to help Alyssa in her time of need, but there would be no way we would find her still breathing.

“We still need to try, what if y-”

Dax was cut off when the screams coming through the laptop got louder, and once again we were all focused on one thing, the screen. Alyssa was now sitting up straighter and her pleading got louder as she cowered down from something in front of her. Her body was thrashing around, trying to escape from the rope that was constricting her.

Not a moment later, another figure walked into view. I may have actually stopped breathing as I watched the person take slow, and menacing strides towards Alyssa. His back was to the camera, and he was dressed in black from head to toe. Once he actually reached Alyssa, he turned around ever so slowly, so that now his face was in the camera’s shot.

However we didn’t actually see a face. What we did see was a mask, and not like those funny horse ones.. no that was not the mask this person was wearing. It was one of those clear ones, with a really creepy face painted on it. It had big eyes and a wide-smiling mouth, making the face look nearly real, just slightly melted. I knew for a fact that if I were to make it out alive, then that mask would be haunting my nightmares for a while.

For a minute or two, he waited behind Alyssa. He rested one of his hands on her shoulder and ran one of his fingers up her neck as he laved over, until he was next to her ear. He must have whispered something bone-chilling to her, because when he picked himself back up, Alyssa scrunched her face up. He turned his head so that now he was looking directly at the camera, and I felt a shiver run through my body, twice. It made me wonder if the creep could actually see us.

Finally, he turned back to Alyssa, and suddenly the hand that wasn’t on her neck rose from beside him and in that hand was a knife that was already stained red. He pressed the edge of the blade against the side of her neck, and her eyes opened briefly to look down at it before she closes them again. He leaned back down, and began to whisper in her ear again.

Alyssa was trying hard to compose herself as she tried to say something, but through her hysterical crying I don’t think anybody could understand her words. This clearly annoyed the masked man because her cries got louder as the knife was pressed harder to her neck.

“Love thy neighbor!” She screamed, “Love thy neighbor!”

He was still whispering in her ear, and I swear that is when I saw the fight she had leave her. She had a now defeated look on her face, and her crying was less hysterical, she was beat.

“Love your neighbor as you would love yourself,” She repeated the psycho’s words, “Do to them what you would expect be done to you.”

He nodded his head slowly at Alyssa, telling her she got it right. He lifted his head slowly back towards the camera, and again I felt my body shudder. Alyssa’s crying was almost a distant noise as I looked into the big, white, cartoon looking eyes of the mask. I don’t know how long it was that we were having our little staring contest, but his next action took less than a second.

In one swift movement, he moved his arm up and slid the knife clear across Alyssa’s neck. She didn’t even have enough time to scream before the blood gushed out and her head slumped forward. Her life completely left her.

Around the room, I heard gasps and cries as everyone watched the horrific scene. My body was frozen to the spot, like I was glued to the floor.

Alyssa Brown, the head cheerleader, and one of the most hated girls in the school has just been murdered. I know throughout the years I have threatened to do it so many times myself, but I would never for a single second wish this upon her.. or anyone for that matter. I didn’t like Alyssa, and I still don’t now.. but seeing her death made my stomach twist and flip, and it made me regret ever telling her the things I did. It’s amazing really, how that works.. when you finally get what you’ve been wanting for so long, when it actually happens you suddenly realize how much you’d wish you could take it back.

The masked guy walked around to Alyssa again and up to the camera, and I swear I didn’t realize I jumped back until I felt Harry’s hand rest on my lower back telling me that he was right there. We all heard tapping on the keyboard and knew that the creep was tying some message out for us again.

‘There goes another one, keep doing what you’re doing Robin’

After he gave us time to read the message, he pointed at the screen and turned away. I wasted no time in slamming the laptop closed. Nobody said anything, we were all left to our own thoughts and flashbacks to the scene we watched mere minutes ago.

As always though, we could all rely on the village idiot to break the silence.

“You know, it’s a lot less fun to watch horror movies when you know it’s not actors with ketchup blood.” Niall says.
