I could show you incredible things

Violet

I absentmindedly swirled the plastic straw in my cup of iced tea as I listened to Hugo ramble on about his day. The smile he wore never left his face while he retold what happened during his shift at The Dead Poet, only making me more enthralled. I clung onto every word that was said and even laughed when he cracked a few jokes.

Hugo paused his tale once the waitress finally brought over our order of burgers and fries. He accepted the tray of food with a curt nod and flashed her a warm smile as she lulled the empty cart of food back into the kitchen.

“This smells like Heaven,” I said after giving the cheeseburger a whiff with my nose, “bet it tastes delicious too.”

“Harriet’s Kitchen has the best burgers in town,” Hugo told me after taking a bite out of his and swallowing. “I'm just happy I was able to show it to you first.”

I felt my heart drop at his last few words, knowing very well that it was Harry who showed me the wonders of this town, including Harriet’s Kitchen, one week ago. I recovered quickly though for his sake, but I doubt he noticed the sudden change in atmosphere.

“I'm in no position to argue with you there,” I chuckled before taking another sip of my beverage from the straw. “Hey, uh, I know this is a bit out of the blue, and it's okay if you don't have an answer to it right now, but I was wondering if…”

“–Yes,” Hugo just blurted out. “Whatever the question was, my answer is yes.”

“Um, I was actually going to ask you if you'd tell me what your plans were after college,” I admitted as the heat rose to my cheeks, “but don't take back your words from before. I'm going to need your consent for the events later on tonight.”

“Now, I'm excited to see what it is that you have planned,” He laughed before clearing his throat, “but to answer your question, I don't really know what I want to do after school. Maybe do something in photography I suppose,” Hugo shrugged as he dipped his fry in ketchup and tossed it into his mouth.

“That's not surprising given the fact that you take amazing pictures. Do you still have the photos from our luncheon?” I asked before taking a huge bite out of my cheeseburger.

“Yup, I've been meaning to show you them for awhile now. They're back at my house,” He told me.

“Could you, you know, bring the pictures to me sometime, so I can see them?”

Hugo furrowed his eyebrows. “Sure, but wouldn't it just be easier for you to come over to my place and see them?”

“I didn't want to just invite myself over, but now that you mention it…” I trailed off in a laugh before regaining my composure. “I'd love to come over and see the pictures. Can we go after this?”

“You don't even have to ask to know the answer to that.” Hugo grinned at me as he reached for my hand underneath the table.

I embraced the warmth our entwined hands created and gave his palm a gentle squeeze to let him know that I enjoyed being this close to him.

“Perfect.”

After giving me a tour of his condo and showing me the pictures from our lunch date, Hugo brought me to the roof of his apartment building. On the elevator ride up, he admitted that one of the reasons why he decided to live off campus was because of the amazing views of the city at night, but all I could focus on was the beautiful sky looming above us.

“I’ve never seen this many stars before…” I said in awe of the sight. “They're absolutely stunning.”

“Yeah, you are,” Hugo whispered, but I thought I had simply misheard, so I turned around to face him only to see that he was already looking at me.

His piercing gaze flicked down to my lips then back up to my eyes as he slowly started to lean into me. My heart jackrabbited against my chest, and I took a deep breath before leaning into him as well.

When our lips finally touched, it was just a soft brush that only lasted for a couple of seconds before we both pulled away. I took a moment to admire his blue eyes and how soft his cheek felt against my palm before kissing him again. However, despite my efforts to stay in the moment, I found my mind drifting back to the conversation that took place between me and Harry nearly a week ago for reasons beyond my understanding.

“Why don't you roll down the windows Harry,” I told him as he pulled up to a stoplight.
He furrowed his eyebrows at me in confusion. “But aren't you cold?”

“Not anymore. Besides, who doesn't like midnight driving with the windows down when it's like thirty degrees? Crazy people--that's who,” I said with a heavy accent. “Are you crazy, Harry?”

A smile formed over his lips at my words. “I don’t know. I bet you'd dig me even more if I was though,” Harry joked.

“Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't. I guess you'll never know.” I simply shrugged.

“Do you want to know what I'm sure of?” There was a certain undertone in his words that I couldn't quite describe, but I nodded my head anyway and urged him to continue. “I'm certain that I could show you incredible things.”

I felt my cheeks flush at his last few words and bit my bottom lip to contain my smile before glancing back into his eyes again. “Whatever you say Taylor Swift.”

Harry threw his head back in a thunderous laugh, and the sound was beautiful. I found myself laughing too and closed my eyes to remember this moment.

I was pulled back into the present when I felt Hugo’s tongue boldly trace a line along my bottom lip. I opened my mouth slightly wider as we kissed, allowing his tongue to slip inside and tease mine.

A low hum of contentment vibrated against my mouth, and I felt myself grinning into the kiss. With two more soft pecks to his lips, I broke away from our embrace and rested my head on his shoulder. Hugo pressed a chaste kiss to my forehead and hugged my body closer to his.

I could have stood there with him all night as we gazed up at the stars and showcased our affection for one another in the form of passionate kisses and sweet nothings, but we both had morning classes tomorrow, and I craved sleep. Like the gentleman he is, Hugo drove me home and walked me to the front door of the cabin I shared with Esther while holding my hand. I stayed quiet for the most part and smiled like an idiot over how well our dinner date went.

“I'd love to take you out again sometime,” Hugo broke the silence as he swung our hands back and forth. “If that's alright with you of course.”

I tilted my chin up, so I could look him in the eyes again and gave him a quick peck over the lips. “Well, I enjoy spending time with you, so I'd like that very much.”

“Great. Well, I suppose I'll see you tomorrow then.”

“Definitely.”

“Goodnight Violet.”

“Goodnight Ha–Hugo.”

Ooh this is great. Even though I couldn't finish this with you, you took a so much bigger approach to this than I ever could and I love this. Loved all of the updates :) x

@yellowdiamonds
That's wonderful. Picture Perfect was so well written and planned. I adored every chapter you posted with that - alas I didn't comment because I didn't have an account back then but it was so wonderful I kept coming back whenever my friend said you had updated to read it x

@fifirose
It means a lot to hear you say that. I try my best to make my characters relatable to my readers. I'm actually super excited for this story to take off. I've done a lot more planning for Ink in comparison to Picture Perfect, so updates should be faster now.

even though it's been forever i'm so glad you updated! i absolutely adore violet and they way you've created and presented her. i feel like i can connect with her on so many levels as a reader; it's astonishing.
