Becoming British

What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

Logan’s POV
My interaction with Louis left me thankful for my quick and speedy get away. After everything I had gone through at home I was not in the mood to deal with boys. They were the last thing on my mind now. The last time I let a guy in, it didn’t end in the greatest way and it made me not trust anyone outside of my normal group of friends which happen to be smart people. Now I know that makes me sound like a really shallow person but if you knew exactly what happened to me back home you would understand and that story is for another place and time. I sighed to myself as I trudged up the stairs to the second floor of dorms to find my room and hopefully meet my roommate. I was just starting to walk up the stairs when someone rudely snapped at me.

“Could you walk a bit faster I would like to get to my room before the end of the year?” the British accent snapped.

He then shoved past me before I could even respond and get out of the way. This caused me to fall yet again. However this time I caught myself before my face met the stairs. I looked up to see a set of very curly brown hair rush up the stairs.

“What crawled up your ass?” I asked myself as I pushed myself off the stairs and started walking up the stairs.

Today was not my day at all and I was really hoping that my roommate was nice and that we would get along great. If not, I have no idea what I was going to do. Probably just lock myself in my room and never come out to talk to anyone but that sounded a bit extreme. In all honesty I probably would just try to avoid my roommate if I didn’t along with her that’s what I did with my last roommate and everything turned out alright—well kind of anyway. I finally made it up the stairs and finally found 23C. I put my key in and thanked god that it worked because if it didn’t, I probably would’ve gone back to the dean’s office and had a conniption fit. Again that was high unlikely that I would be that much of a drama queen but the thought did cross my mind. I pushed the door open and took a look around the room. These were completely different than what I had back in California. I was standing in a welcome area were there was a small closet to put coats and shoes. I slowly moved more into the dorm and saw a living room already furnished with a TV, giant couch, and a coffee table. I was definitely impressed and I hadn’t even seen the rest of the dorm. I continued to walk and saw that there was also a full functional kitchen which made me smile because that meant I didn’t have to worry about eating cross cafeteria food if I didn’t want to. I then walked down a hallway that had two doors. I assumed they were the bedrooms so I opened the first one to find it empty. Maybe my roommate hadn’t arrived yet. I mean we didn’t have to be on campus until Monday and it was Saturday after all so I just assumed she hadn’t arrived. I had put my bag on the bed and started looking around the room. There was a desk, dresser, and bed. The walls weren’t completely white which was nice. They were a tanish looking color so at least it wasn’t completely boring. I was about to start unpacking what little I had brought with me when I heard the dorm door open and close. I was about to walk out of the room when a girl with pretty long light brown hair and brown eyes walked into my room.

“Why are you in my room?” she asked a bit upset.

“Um. . .hi,” I said awkwardly, “I’m Logan. I guess we’re roommates. . .”

Before I could answer however she already jumped down my throat.

“No shit,” she said, “I’m Jackie and why are you in my room.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t know it was taken,” I said grabbing my bag, “I didn’t get a chance to see that it was already taken. I’ll just go to the next room.”

I then quickly grabbed my bag and rushed to the next room and shut the door. Well my roommate was just peachy. Everyone I had met on campus except Louis and the secretary in the dean’s office were all very rude. I was hoping not everyone was like that. I sighed to myself as I pushed myself off the door and walked over to my bed. I dropped my one duffle bag and backpack on the bed and started unpacking. I didn’t pack very many clothes. Most of them I owned wouldn’t have fit in London’s weather and I didn’t have the money to buy a new wardrobe. I was just lucky I had a full ride scholarship here to even be attending college. Back home I had to pay for my own schooling and debt was starting to pile up already from just two semesters in college. I pulled out a small picture frame with a picture of my mom and brother from my backpack and smiled down at it. I sure missed them and everyday it was a bit harder to function but I had to remember that I was here for them to make them proud. I set the picture frame on my desk and walked back to the bed and continued to grab the few band posters I had gotten from my friends and grandma for my birthday and put those up around my room. It sorta had the same feel as my room back home since they were covered in all kinds of band and movie posters. After I cleared my backpack, I then moved onto the small amount of clothes I had brought. I had bet the clothes I had brought with me would only fit in like two of the six drawers. I had just put the clothes away when my computer started ringing. I walked over to the desk and saw that my friend, Sophie, was calling me on her skype account. I accepted the call and waited for her picture to appear on the screen.

“Finally you got online!” she exclaimed, “I’ve been waiting for hours!”

“I’m sorry,” I said, “I. . .”

“Not having a great first day?” she asked already reading my expression and face.

“Yeah,” I sighed, “I spent three hours looking for my room. Then I got knocked down twice.”

“Oh Lo,” Sophie said frowning, “I’m sorry beautiful. I would give you a hug if I was there right now.”

“Its alright,” I said, “These rooms are amazing though. You have no idea.”

“Spill,” she said grinning.

I then went into detail about the dorm having a living room and kitchen along with a place to hang coats and put shoes. As I was gushing Sophie was laughing.

“I’m so jealous,” she said, “I just have my bed area here and my roommate is like super weird. She collects dead bugs.”

“Oh my,” I said covering my mouth trying not to laugh, “I thought you were rooming with Honors kids from the Honors program.”

“She is in the Honors program,” she said deflated, “She took your spot.”

“I’m sorry Sophie,” I said frowning, “I know I promised to be your roommate this year.”

“Hey you got a better deal,” she said, “I totally understand. I would’ve dropped you if I got a full ride to another college.”

“Are you sure?” I asked still feeling bad about dropping my one good friend I had made from college.

“Positive,” she grinned, “Now you’re roommate.”

I hadn’t really had much interaction with my roommate unless you call the introductions we went through interaction. I knew I was already judging her but she was completely rude and I hadn’t even said more than fifty words to her.

“She’s. . .” I started looking for the right words.

“Not your cup of tea,” Sophie laughed and I sighed deflated.

“She was kind of rude when she walked into the dorm,” I said, “I was apparently in her room. She’s American though. She didn’t have a British accent.”

“Well that’s nice, well that she’s American anyway,” Sophie said, “So she won’t pull any weird shit on you.”

“You don’t know that,” I said, “For all know she might just take my clothes while I’m showering after I workout or something.”

“I highly doubt that Logan,” she said, “You just need to be more outgoing.”

I just rolled my eyes at the sentence. Sophie tried to get me to open up more during the spring semester of our freshman year and that I ended up with my throwing up all over the star quarterback for the football team. I was just perfectly fine with smart nerds who enjoyed watching Star Trek and Star Wars.

“When pigs fly Sophie,” I said, “We know what happened last time I tried that.”

“Just give it one more shot Lo,” she said, “You never know what could happen. Maybe you’ll make new friends and find a cute British boy.”

Well I already found the cute British boy, I thought to myself and shook my head of the thought.

“No way,” I said, “I’m trying to graduate early. I’m just going to lock myself in my room and study.”

“Well I would spend more time with you on this and argue but I don’t want my roommate to see you so she doesn’t bore you with all her weird stories about how she got her bugs,” she said, “Love you and skype me after syllabus day!”

“Will do Soph,” I said, “Stay sane. Love you too!”

We then hung up the skype call and I sighed to myself.

“What have I gotten myself into?” I asked myself.
