Listen To Your Heart ~ COMPLETED

Getting Closer

Harry’s POV
My. Heart. Stopped. I felt as if I couldn’t breathe. It was her. The one time I ignore a phone call and it’s her. Words cannot explain how mad I am for not answering the phone.

“Harry, it’s me. Harmony. I’m using a public telephone booth, so I don’t have much time, but I want you to know that I’m fine. It’s a really long story that I can’t possibly explain over the phone right now, but listen. I’m okay. I’m in good hands. There was a man who… I don’t know. It’s a long family history thing. It’s really complicated. Until this man gets found, I have to hide. An old classmate of mine is helping me. He’s actually the guy’s son, and he is trying to get his father put in the pound. Well, I have to go now, but I hope I can see you soon. I lo-” The message was cut short at the end. Now, the tears were streaming freely down my cheeks.

How could I be so inconsiderate? I should have picked up the call. Instead, I was selfish only wanting hear her from her number. Of course if she were taken she wouldn’t have her cell phone. She would have to call from a different number, but I was too soaked up in my own self-pity to realize that.

This is all so frustrating right now. With every last bit of anger in me, I created a decent sized hole in the wall. I hadn’t even realized my current actions until I heard the boys stumble into the room.

“Haz, you’re hand is bleeding!” Lou gaped in shock. I looked down at my hand. I tried to move my fingers, but I couldn’t feel anything from the wrist down. My knuckles were leaking fresh blood, the deepest shade of crimson.

“I- I think it’s broken,” I said.

“Bloody hell! What happened that made you punch the wall?” Zayn demanded with great force.

“You know what, you can explain everything once we get you to the hospital,” Liam asserted while attempting to get me to stand up.

“Nonsense. It’s just a minor fall back. No biggy…” I really despise hospitals. The smell of dead people and lemony scented cleaning solutions always got to my head.

“Says the bloke who just claimed it to be broken. We’re going. Niall call Simon and say that we’re going to be late. Louis, call Paul and tell him change of plans. Zayn, help me with Harry here,” Liam dictated.

~

“Well, it’s not too bad, but you’ll have to wear a cast for at least 6 weeks until it heals over. You’re lucky that ‘wall’ didn’t put up a fight, or you might have found yourself in deeper waters Mr. Styles.”

I just gave the doctor a small nod before he left to get the stuff for the cast. The boys and Paul walked in shortly after he left.

“So what happened?” Louis barked.

“Well, I have to wear a cast for about 6 weeks, so-”

“Not that. Why? Why did you punch the wall?” Lou snapped, cutting me off.

I sighed. How do I tell them? Whatever I say will probably sound like the stupidest thing they’ve ever heard, so instead of telling them, I took out my phone and played the message on speaker.

Louis’ POV
Harry is really confusing me now. He punches the wall and pulls out his phone to avoid explaining to us. Why won’t he just tell us? A few button pushes later, my question became long gone from my mind. Just that simple hello could explain everything, and the way that it was cut off at the end before…

Our fellow companion’s sadness has become ours as we all exchange glances of sorrow. Before anyone could speak, whether or not anyone even had words, the nurse came in and ushered everyone out of the room to apply Harry’s new cast to his arm.

I feel really stupid for being so mean to him in there. I should have asked him calmly instead of snapping at him like that. I was just really concerned for him and his current position. He didn’t need any more baggage at the moment, yet he found a way to add more.

None of us were in the mood to talk now. Unspoken words about what we all thought were being concealed under our nearly blank expressions. On the outside, we are merely a bunch of guys who don’t have feelings, but deep, down inside us all there is a swirl of emotions wanting to escape. We all wanted to do what our careless brother had done, but we had to stand strong and show him that everything will be okay, and maybe one day, everything will be normal.

Normal. What is normal? Technically we aren’t “normal,” but at the same time we are. We’re just normal in our own way. I know for a fact that none of us can be normal with Harmony gone. Everything just isn’t the same without her. She brings us all together. When she’s gone, it’s like we’re all gone from one another. Harmony is the adhesive in our ‘ohana’; she is the bond to our crazy, weird, sometimes twisted, family.

We watched as Paul got up explaining that he was going to sign Harry out. The four of us nodded in response. There were no ‘okay’ or ‘yeah’s’ coming from our mouths. Surely, I would be the one talking though. If I don’t talk, no one talks. This is how anyone who really, truly knows us could tell if something serious were happening right now.

I still can’t get over that message. Her voice, it sounded so pure, yet so broken. My body jolted with happiness when I heard her voice. It was like when hearing Eleanor after a long concert when on tour. I was always so happy just to hear that innocent little voice of the girl I truly loved; that’s how I felt my ears first caught sound of her.

Then, there was the part about a long, complicated story. Family history? I for one wouldn’t believe anything that the guys said or did, but she sounded like she was in good hands. I can only hope that they catch this man soon, for I would surely die tomorrow than live the rest of my life without her. I just feel like she is my responsibility. I feel obligated to be like the parent she needs. She needs to be here to make us all whole again. This whole group is falling apart without her presence.

The click of the door sounded, and Harry followed the nurse out of the room with a quiet, violet cast on his right arm. Paul came back and thanked the nurse before leading us all out on a silent trek to the van.

Never have I ever known us to be so quiet. This is just how much of an impact one girl can have on all of our lives. One simple reassurance message from her could keep us quiet for years on end until she gets back. If it wasn’t for our recording session, we probably could’ve kept quieter than Gandhi.

We were all drag today. None of us could hit the notes at the same time. One of us was always off key, and our focus was on one thing.

The track was cut short in the middle of recording. We were actually doing pretty well this time, so it took us as surprise when Simon cut us off.

“Okay, boys. What’s up?” Simon prompted. None of us spoke. We all just stared back at him, whether we were just unsure of what to say or the subject was just too touchy for us, I’m not sure. “Is this about Harmony?”

Harmony… the name echoed through my mind like a symphony of music.

“Uncle Simon,” Liam started, “we’re all just a little off. Today has been quite… eventful for all of us.” Leave to Daddy Direction to cover for us.

“I see. Harry, why purple?” Simon questioned. What kind of question is that? Everyone has a right to choose whatever color he or she pleases, no meaning required.

“Purple… It’s her favorite color.” I could almost see him smiling slightly with his head bowed down.

“I see… Well, you guys are done for today. I want you to straighten your act by tomorrow. Understand?”

We nodded and dragged our tired selves out of the recording booth. We need to get our act together. We need to find Harmony, even if it’s the last thing we do. There has to be some sort of clue in the phone call that could lead us to her…

Harry’s POV
I don’t think I can live with myself anymore. Now that I know that her life is in danger, I am even more stressed out. Punching the wall didn’t help me to release all of the anger in me; in fact, it only made my situation worse.

What Simon doesn’t understand is that no matter how much time he gives us to ‘clean up our act,’ the only thing that can turn us around is her. And I do mean us. The guys are just about as down as I am about this; I’m just worse because we just got back together. Now she’s gone.

Nothing I can do will help. I can’t go looking for her, because I don’t even know where to start.

“Knock-knock,” Lou enters my room.

“Hey,” I uttered.

“I’m really sorry for snapping at you earlier. I had no idea-”

“It’s okay, Lou. I deserved to be snapped at. What I did was wrong. I had no right to harm myself.”

“Do you think I can maybe… listen to that voicemail one more time?”

“Uh… Sure?” I cough up my phone to Louis who plays the message to himself.

“Why did you-” He put his index finger to my lips, hushing me in a disgusting manner. I have no idea where his hands have been.

“Hm…” he ended the feed. “That’s it!”

“What’s it?”

“She’s here in London! It’s a local number; she used a telephone booth! We just need to figure out how close she was to her hiding place!” Louis proclaimed loudly enough for the rest of the boys to here from the living room.

“She’s here?” Zayn, Liam, and Niall trip over each other to crowd in through the narrow door frame.”

“Yes! And I have proof!”

“Lou, you’re a genius!” I admitted much to my dismay.

“I always have been,” he said cockily.

“Yay! We’re getting closer to her. Now we just need to track that number!” Niall said.

“Then, we can check nearby places to see if she’s there,” Liam contributed to the idea.

“And everything will finally get back to normal!” I exclaimed.

“Well, sort of. There’s still that man,” Zayn commented.

“Right… But she is my rock. She is my world. She is my all. She is my everything. I will find a way to get this man as long as I can get her back.”
