Night Changes

Hotel California

Harry led the dreary Liam into his hotel, into the elevator and into his room. Then, he told Liam to lie down on the bed while he showered. Liam obeyed his commands, curling up on the bed and concealing himself under the comforter.

Harry took his time in the shower, making sure to soap himself well. For some reason, having a guest in his room made him conscious of his hygiene, which was actually charming for the girls he met. For Liam, however, it seemed to make no difference, as he was out, like a light. Harry sighed and got out a comb. He began to brush Liam's hair, minding the tangles. He once had hair like this after all, so he knew the pain whenever his hair would be pulled. Liam slept on, too tired to mind the comb that was unfurling his tangled mane. Harry was amazed that Liam's hair was so soft. He wondered out loud what Liam's secret was to having this kind of hair. Liam stirred and his lips moved, as if he was actually answering Harry's question. Harry smiled, setting the comb aside. He got into bed next to Liam and turned to his side, facing Liam's now tame mane of hair. He closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of Liam's hair. It was addicting, kind of like a drug. However, it was the kind of drug that made you fall asleep, as Harry soon found himself drifting off into a deep slumber...

Harry woke up to the sound of music... but not just any kind of music. The melody was soft and sweet, captivating, almost angelic. Harry opened his eyes, wondering if he was dreaming, or if the angels had finally come to take him away. Much to his surprise, he found Liam sitting at the edge of the bed, strumming his guitar. Harry listened carefully to Liam, awestruck. Liam's voice was clear, melodious-something about it made Harry want to sing along, but he didn't know the lyrics, so he satisfied himself with humming as Liam sang...

I'm feeling something deep inside
Hotter than the dead stream burning up
I got a feeling deep inside
It's taking, it's taking all I've got
Yeah, it's taking, its taking all I've got...

Harry didn't know the song well-although he and his bandmates had sung it last year, when the album Four was released. His memory had become faint over the years, all the important memories buried deep in an unreachable cavern. But there was something in Liam's voice that reminded him of one particular memory, so far away and so faint, but it happened only days ago.

"I love you..."

"I love you too..."

"I love you more..."

"Nobody loves you baby the way I do..."

"Are we fireproof?"

"That's all we are..."

That conversation... that night... that person with the soulful brown eyes... those waves of light brown, slightly golden in the moonlight... a pair of geek chic glasses... hipster, but trendy... curvy body... perfect lips... sweet voice... fun and sweet personality... foreigner... half-Filipino... French descent... unique name that Harry never knew the meaning of... fun in bed, but she never took off her clothes... liked to snuggle... irresistible... perfect... too damn beautiful... sporty... friendly... attractive... her name starts with a C... what is it? ... ... her name is... Caelan.

"Isn't she lovely... " Harry found himself singing.

"Yes, she is," Liam replied, much to Harry's surprise.

"What? Who?"

"Caelan."

"You know her?!"

"Who doesn't? She's varsity girl."

Varsity girl, Harry thought. How could I be so stupid?

"You were in a relationship with her," Liam began to speak in his monotone voice. "She was never one for relationships, but bam, you ended up with her. She's the last person you spoke to before you left. You never told her you'd leave."

"The first part's correct..." Harry said, contemplatively. He knew that Liam wasn't him-he could never truly know what happened to Harry unless he was told-but he also knew that Liam had a better memory than him. He searched his brain for some reminder of the day he left... was it really just Louis that he had last spoken to? Suddenly, he remembers a line from one of Taylor Swift's songs...

'Cuz there we are again on that little town street.
You almost ran the red 'cause you were looking over at me.
Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well.
..

"I remember Caelan saying she'd never forget me... that she'd never forget who I was and how much I meant to her," Harry whispered. "I promised her I'd remember her, and she told me to keep my promise... I wish I could say I did."

"You did," Liam said softly.

"How do you know?" Harry asked.

"You're crying. That means you remember," Liam reached up, wiping a tear from Harry's eyes.

"I'll admit, I wonder if she knows..." Harry began to stare out into space.

"If she knows...?" Liam asked.

Harry patted the velvety stubble on his head. "What would she say to this?"

"If she really loved you, she'd know that there's much more to you than your hair."

"Do you think so?"

"I know so."

"You've never been in a relationship!"

"But varsity girl is my sister."

Harry raised an eyebrow, then sighed, realising that he had never bothered to ask Caelan what her last name was.

"Caelan... Payne..." Harry said softly.

"You won't believe me if I told you this, but I'm a varsity too," Liam said quietly. "That's why I have scrapes and cuts... because I fall when I run, then get back up and run again."

"I'm like that," Harry said. "Except it's with relationships. If something goes wrong with a girl, I pick up the broken pieces, get up and start it all over again."

"So Caelan isn't just any girl?"

"She's too much of everything to be 'any girl'. I knew that from day 1."

"Do you want to talk to her?"

"Can I tell you something before I talk to her?" Harry whispered.

Liam shrugged, then moved closer to Harry.

"My real name is Harry Styles," Harry whispered.

"I know that," Liam whispered. "I also know that you cut yourself 14 times with a knife just so that you could feel the pain."

Harry stared at Liam. He was still amazed that Liam knew so much about him, but for some reason, knowing that his girlfriend was Liam's sister, it made perfect sense. Caelan easily trusted people, and she did mention that she was close to her brother... it all made perfect sense now.
