Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Nine.

The drive to Maiko's work was the longest one I've ever had to make. It was three days after New Years, and our conversation had been limited to absolutely necessary small talk. I'd been avoiding both Luke and Maiko, but I only felt guilty about the man I live with. So, after a long thought process, I opted to skip out on my lunch break and drive to Maiko's work. When I slowly walked through the building, his colleagues smiled at me as if nothing were wrong, and that made me feel absolutely horrible. The walk to his office seemed impossibly longer than the drive.

"Maiko?" I whispered, stepping in. He removed his glasses as he rubbed his eyes, looking up from his computer.
"Hey babe." He smiled as I shut the door behind me, motioning for me to come to him, pulling me on his lap once I obliged. "What's going on?" He asked as he held me.
"I just wanted to say I'm sorry." He furred his eyebrows together.
"Why are you sorry?" He inquired.
"I've been away." Maiko quietly laughed as he traced circles on my lower back with his thumb.
“What the hell are you talking about?” He’d grown far too used to my delusional banter.
“My-my mind. I’ve been sucked into my mind lately, and I haven’t been here for you, not fully, and I’m sorry about that because you don’t deserve that, and that is no way to treat your boyfriend and-” Maiko cut me off, pressing his lips lightly against mine.

“Shhh.” He whispered, pushing my hair away from my face and giving me a dorky smile. “You’re okay.” He half-assed a reassurance.
“But I’ve been horrible, you see, and-” Again, I was cut off.
“Romina.” He quietly brought me back with a small chuckle. “Baby you do this all the time.” He leaned back in his chair as I repositioned myself on his leg to see him better.
“Elaborate.” I cocked my head, biting my lip.
“You go into these moods, sometimes, Romina. And you’re distant, quiet, and act odd, you’ve been doing it since we met, but that’s okay.” He ran a hand across the hair on his chin. “Because I know you’ve got some pretty fucked up shit going on in here.” He tapped my head, causing me to smile.

“Do you hate that about me?” I asked, following the silence that struck us.
“Hmm?” He hummed.
“When I go away. Do you hate that?” He thought for a long while.
“No.” Before I could question him, he spoke. “Because when you come back down, you always come back to me.” I didn’t know how to tell him that it was not entirely true, that I’ve gone to Luke a few times as well.
“People usually hate it.” I noted, speaking of the blonde-haired-devil in particular.
“Yeah?” Maiko crossed his arms. “Did Luke?” He growled. Whenever Maiko asked me about Luke, it started a fight, which is why I hadn’t told him that Luke was now working in the same building as I.
“Does it matter?” My voice was soft as I untied his arms to hold his large, rough hands.
“Does it?” He shot back at me.
“No.” I rejected. “It doesn’t.” Maiko sighed, shifting me off his lap to stand and walk towards the window in his office. I followed him, wrapping my arms around him, pressing my chest to his back, and holding his strong, vast body.

“There’s something you’re not telling me.” Maiko muttered. “And it terrified me that we’ve been dating for almost two years now, and my first thought when you seem further off than usual—is always him.” I breathed in Maiko’s scent and silently compared it to Luke’s, cursing myself in the process.
“I haven’t seen him in years, Maiko.” I lied. Maiko spun around, causing my grip to falter as we stood facing each other.
“That doesn’t matter, babe!” He argued. “I shouldn’t have to worry if you’ve bumped into him! I love you, and he could come back any second and steal you away.” My insecure boy spoke, staring at the floor.
“I don’t want him anymore.” I knew that was true, with all I have, I despise him. “I don’t love him.” I was unsure whether that was a lie. “I want you.” Maiko looked up.
“But you don’t love me.” His voice nearly cracked as he met my eyes.
“I never said that…” My voice trailed off. “I don’t not love you, Maiko.”
“But you don’t love me, either!” He repeated, I didn’t reply. I merely grabbed his hand, which was curled into a fist, and kissed his knuckles.
“You need some time to calm down.” I whispered. “I’ll see you tonight.” On my tippy toes, I kissed his cheek, and left his office.

“Hey glasses.” Luke mocked as he stopped in front of my desk. “I need you to bring these-” He spoke as a co-worker walked past us, then leant down. “Why have you been ignoring me?” He demanded to know.
“Go away, I’m trying to work.” I didn’t look at him, instead, I kept typing a report.
“I’m not leaving until you tell me what the fuck is up.”
“I’ll tell you what’s up, Luke.” I spoke in a quiet, harsh tone. “You show up, out of nowhere, fuck me, then start to fucking work for my boss and persistently try to talk to me, and I am sick of it.” I stood, walking around the desk to come face to face with him. “What’s up?” I asked. “What’s up is that I have a boyfriend, and a new life. This isn’t high school anymore, Luke! You can’t get me back, ever.” He smirked.
“I remember the last time you said that was ten minutes before we fucked. Care for a quickie in the bathroom.” It took everything I had not to slap him.
“You’re disgusting and I hate you.” As I tried to walk away, he grabbed my wrist.
"Do you think of me when he touches you? Do you feel guilty when you're moaning my name?" I couldn’t hold it in any longer, pushing against his chest roughly.
“Fuck you!” I growled before storming away and into Mr. Jones’ office.

“Got a second?” I asked, closing the door and sitting down.
“I do now.” My boss joked, setting his paperwork down. “What can I do for you, Miss Baker?” I sighed, desperately trying to calm down.
“I can’t work with Luke.” I blandly stated, crossing my arms.
“Why’s that?” He leaned back in his chair. Biting my lip, I shook my head.
“He drives me crazy.” I tried to cover up the reasoning, but Mr. Jones saw right through it.
“Romina, I can’t help you if you’re not being honest.” He found humor in the situation. “Luke is a good man, he’s responsible and-” I cut him off.
“And a coward!” I scoffed.
Romina!” He scolded. I muttered an apology, picking at my dress. “Be frank with me.” He urged. “Why don’t you want to work with Luke?” When I looked into Peter Jones’ eyes, I saw nothing but a caring man.
“We-we have a history.” I summed up. “We used to date, and things ended horribly for both of us. It’s too weird seeing him, and it’s like he holds it against me.” Mr. Jones leaned forward on his desk, propping his elbows up.

“Romina, our past is in the past for a reason. We can not run from it, nor can we change it. And the past will hurt sometimes, but when he shows up with good intentions, you shouldn’t push him away. He’s here for a reason, he’s in the past for a reason, and he’s back in your present for a reason, too. The past will never stop catching up with you. You can learn from it, or you can run from it—I advise you to learn.” He lectured me, causing me to bite my lip. It was obvious he was referring to Luke.
“You knew?” I asked, he nodded slowly.
“I found out a little bit after I hired him, but that’s not the point. The point is that Luke is a good man, and you know that, dear. You also know it’s not a good idea to be alone with him. As much as I would like to help you, I can not fire him without probable cause. I understand that you used to love him, he used to love you, too, and I understand that you have a new boyfriend, so the next time he tries to get under your skin, remember that. He’s doing it because it ticks you off. You need to know that, and you need to ignore that.” Sighing, I stood.
“Yes, sir.” I rasped.
“Be the bigger person, Romina. As cliche as it seems, be bigger than him.” He called as I made my way to the door. Nodding, I exited his office and made my way back to mine. Well, what did I expect to happen?
