Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Five.

Maiko came home late that night, around two in the morning, and came straight to bedroom—he walked to my side of the bed and pressed the home button on my phone, sending me a questionable glance. I shrugged silently, as he saw the unread text from a missing number.
“Just checking the time.” He muttered, clearly buzzed and lying. He walked around to his side of the bed, kicking his shoes off and removing his pants and shirt before climbing in and pulling my small body to his. After a moment, he pressed his lips to mine. I groggily groaned, squirming out of his grip.
“No.” I muttered, turning away from him and pulling my blanket over my shoulders.
“We always fuck after a fight.” Maiko reasoned as he scooted toward me, his chest lining against my back as he kissed my neck.
“Not tonight.” I repeated, shrugging him off before he sighed, turning loudly and mumbling to himself about how it wasn’t even his fault. He turned off the light and shortly began to snore. I bit my lip, holding a few tears in, and forcing myself to sleep.

***THE NEXT DAY***

“Morning, Romina.” Maiko mumbled as I walked out of the bathroom and to the sofa. He set his book on the coffee table and turned his music down while he greeted me. As I was about to sit, he pulled me onto his lap, kissing me good morning. My hair was damp from the shower and smelt of apple shampoo, the kind he loves. He smiled as he inhaled, cradling me in his arms. “Ugly Christmas sweater?” He questioned, referring to the words on my top.
“I guess so.” I grinned.
“You make ugly look cute.” He half complimented, poking my side.
“I’m trying to be festive!” I defended, giggling.
“Yeah?”

“Christmas is in a few days, you know.” I reminded him. “Ten days, to be exact.” I made sure he was aware of the date, excited for the holiday.
“I know.” He sighed quietly.
“We don’t have any decorations.” I noted. “Or a tree.” Maiko pursed his lips.
“I know.” He nodded.
“We don’t have anything, really. I don’t have any in storage, my old roommate handled those kinds of things.” I shrugged, recalling my college roommate. “Do you?” He shook his head. “We should get some today. We’re both off work.” Maiko rolled his eyes playfully, nudging me off his lap and standing.
“Right.” He pulled me up by the hand. “Let’s go.” Without further hesitation, we grabbed our things and left.

Maiko and I were walking through the store, I was attached to his arm and he was pushing the cart we had full of lights, small decorations, and a small, white tree I figured would look nice in our flat. We also had wrapping paper and a few gifts for our families and friends.
“So what’s the plan for Christmas anyways?” I asked him as I tightened my grip on his arm.
“Uhm… Well I was thinking we exchange gifts in the morning, have breakfast. My family is getting together at ten for presents and lunch at Mum’s, she wanted you to come.” He invited me, causing a small smile to spread over my lips.
“That’s perfect. Christmas at my mum’s starts at four. We could go there after.” He nodded.
“Okay.” He agreed.
“Oh! And Kaylee is having a party at eleven at night. Everyone is staying the night. She wants us to go to that.” Maiko sighed, he’s always hated my friends.
“Maybe.” He forced a smile, running a hand down his beard.

“What do you want for Christmas?” He changed the subject.
“What do you want?” I fired back at him as we turned down another aisle.
“I don’t know.” He sighed, being unresponsive as always.
“Me neither.” I pulled away from him and stopped by the ornaments. “I like these ones.” I pointed to the shades of blue on the very top. “I think it’d go nice with the tinsel, star, and lights we got.” I grinned as Maiko got it down from the shelf and put it in the cart. “Let’s make cookies tonight, too!” I urged, grabbing his arm and leading him again. Maiko rubbed the bridge of his eyes as if I were annoying him. “You okay?” I frowned, worried that was the case. He nodded.
“Just a headache.” His green eyes turned to me as he smiled lightly and helped me gather the items needed to make homemade cookies.

After we got home, Maiko and I began decorating our house with cute little knick-knacks, string lights, and Christmas-y things. We put out white tree up, decorating it with blue tinsel,, lights, and ornaments. Our house was completely festive and made me feel warm inside, and thankful that Maiko let us do this. We wrapped the few gifts we got and stuck them under the tree to complete the look. And as Maiko sat and watched a film on the couch, I made dinner and cookies, eating with him, then going out—last minute—to shop with Kaylee.

“What are you planning on getting him?” She asked me as we wandered around the mall.
“No idea.” I sighed as she pulled me into a store. “This is nice.” I held up a sweater. “ I think Luke would like it.” I showed Kaylee.
“Luke?” She raised an eyebrow as she picked Josi up.
“Shit.” I blushed. “Uhm… Maiko.” I corrected. Luckily, Kaylee ignored the issue, as Josi buried her face in Kay’s neck and began mumbling to her.
“I don’t know, honey. Why don’t you ask her.” Kaylee smiled at her daughter, shifting her in her arms so she faced me.
“Can you hold me, Auntie Ro?” Josi asked, blushing. I smiled, taking her into my arms. Kaylee sent me a worried glare, but decided not to bring up my name slip, though I was hoping she would—so I’d have an excuse to talk to him.

***A WEEK LATER, CHRISTMAS DAY***

“Merry Christmas.” Maiko kissed me as he handed me a gift, I gave him his watch and watched him open it before opening mine. I pulled out a beautiful necklace, a heart leading to a centered diamond. It went well with my dress, and don’t get me wrong, I loved it—but I found it hard to believe any real thought went into it, I suppose our gifts were one in the same.

***

After a long day of visiting both my and Maiko’s families, it was finally time to see my friends. Maiko had refused to go as his other friend’s had invited him over, and I was forced to show up alone, explaining that he was already drunk and wanted to stay at a mate’s for the night, as per usual. I was only at the party for a good thirty minutes, hanging out with Ella, Kaylee, and Steph, when another familiar face walked in the door. My jaw immediately dropped as I turned to Kaylee.
“I-I didn’t know.” She explained, but it was too late, he saw me. Biting the perfect, pierced lips of his, his stared at the floor and joined the boys in the living room while the girls tried to console me.

***LUKE’S POINT OF VIEW***

And so, we met again. She was wearing a dress I’d never seen and heels, accompanied by that red-ish lipstick I’ve always hated—now, it seemed the perfect shade. Her nails were painted the way they were when we went out on dates, and the curls that used to reach her waist was now cut to her shoulders. I smelt her from the moment I walked into Kaylee’s flat, a scent I’d never forgotten, her perfume. I heard her muttering something from the kitchen, and it took me back to all the times she told me that she loved me, all the times she panicked in the middle of the night, or laughed uncontrollably. Glancing her way, I saw her smile. The smile that used to make me happy, now it only hurt my chest. I remembered what it felt like when her lips brushed mine, so gently but so passionately—how sweet she tasted, like vanilla chapstick. I looked into the eyes that were fixated on the fifth beer I’d seen her ingest, and thought of all the tears, apologises, and all the “I miss you’s” that were left unsaid. I remembered how much it hurt to leave her, to lose her, and my heart stung—only for a second—see, I moved on a long time ago, but I couldn’t help but wonder why I ever left a girl like her.
“I can’t stay.” I told the lads once I saw Romy make her way to the bathroom, as it hurt to know how close she was to me. “I’m going home.” Before they could object, I was leaving the flat.

***ROMINA’S POINT OF VIEW***

“I have to go.” I told the girls when I returned from the bathroom. “Maiko wanted me back tonight.” I lied, grabbing the remnants of the dishes I brought and leaving the flat before they could respond. Once I was out in the hall, I came face-to-face with Luke.
“I thought forgot my coat for a second.” He mumbled, looking at the floor as he rubbed his neck.
“You clearly didn’t.” I whispered, biting my lip. He slowly lifted his head, staring into my eyes. Breaking eye contact, I started down the hall. Before I could make it far, Luke grabbed my wrist, causing me to gasp and back into a wall with uncertainty.
“You cut your hair.” He lightly touched the ends, looking at me while he chewed on his lip ring.
“Y-Yeah.” I stuttered as his hand trailed to my cheek, stopping my breathing entirely.
“I miss you a lot.” It confused me as to why he was being so bold. I was unsure whether it came with his clear maturity, or if he was just drunk on confidence and lust.
“You shouldn’t.” It was hard for me to stand my ground and not follow his touch as he pulled away.

“I should go.” He spoke, seeming to be trying to convince himself more than me, as if he’d just realized how strong he’d came on.
“Don’t go.” I called after him before he disappeared down the hall. It left my mouth before I could stop it, and I was mentally cursing myself when he turned around to look at me with raised eyebrows. “Walk me to my flat.” I insisted. “If you’d like.” I looked at the floor. “I have a few things to carry, if you’d help.” His eyes travelled to the three platters as he approached me, grabbing all three and directing me to lead the way. The elevator ride was awkward, as he hadn’t known I was in the same building as Kaylee, and as we walked to my door, it was silent. I unlocked the flat, and Luke followed me in, placing the platters on the kitchen counter and shoving his hands deep in his pockets, staring at the floor as if he feared looking into my eyes.
“Bye.” He mumbled, turning on his heels.

“Luke.” I called after him again, stopping him from leaving the kitchen. “I’ve missed you, too.” I admitted, which had ultimately caused him to turn around and make eye contact with me. It seemed as if he was at a loss for words.
“You have?” He held back a smile.
“Yeah.” This time, I was the one to look away, trying to fight the overwhelming urge to grab his face and kiss him.
“Thanks, Romy.” He ran a hand through his hair. I contemplated whether to tell him not to call me Romy, like I had with everyone else, but I loved the way it rolled off his tongue—and ultimately decided against it.
“Well, I’ll show you out.” I blurted to fill the silence, then lead him through the hall and to the front door. He stopped before grabbing the handle and looked back at me.

“You have no idea how bad I want to kiss you right now.” He whispered, his large hand trailing my jaw. “You’re so beautiful.” He whispered again, biting his lip. “But I should go before I get us both in trouble.” He pulled his touch from my skin, judging my reaction before beginning to turn. I couldn’t stop myself as I grabbed him and whipped him to face me, crashing both my body and lips against his. He immediately responded, introducing his tongue into the kiss as his hands grabbing my hips and pulling me tighter towards him, moving to my thighs and encouraging me to jump onto him. Once I did, he walked with me toward my bedroom, crashing down with me onto the bed. His hand crawled up my dress, squeezing my breast over my bra and leaving me to subconsciously think about how fast everything had escalated.
“Take it off.” I mumbled as he moved to my neck, unzipping my dress and pulling it quickly off as I ripped his shirt off, trailing my hands down his newly-fit chest and moving to his jeans, unbuckling them and sliding them down. He worked at removing his pants and grabbing a condom, rolling it on before hovering over me—stopping dead cold.
“You have a boyfriend.” He muttered, almost jealously.
“I don’t care.” I whispered in response as he slowly slided into me.

***

Luke and I lied on my bed, out of breath and embarrassed. The two of us hadn’t realized how far we’d taken things until we were laying naked, on top of each other and undone. We didn’t look at each other—shamefully trying to cover our bits and pieces with the small blanket.
“You should go.” I finally mustered up the courage to speak. It was three in the morning, and Maiko was due back in a few hours.
“I should.” He agreed, standing and quickly dressing.
“This was a mistake.” I attempted to hold my tears in as I watching him trying to walk away.
“I came to that party with nothing but good intentions.” He promised. “And I left by fucking up your life again.” Before I could respond, he’d rushed out of my flat.
