Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Twenty-Six.

“You didn’t!” Ella gasped in disbelief. Her, Kaylee, Steph, and I were sitting at a table in the mall’s food court. We were enjoying our girl’s day out and were now sat, enjoying lunch when I popped the news—Luke and I slept together. It had been about two weeks since the night we’d had sex for the first time in a long time, and we’d had it countless times within the span of then and now.
“I did! A lot, actually.” I blushed. “We’re back together.”
“For fucks sake! Finally!” Kaylee laughed. “I was beginning to think it was a lost cause!”
“I’m so happy for you, really!” Steph smiled, placing her hand on mine. I couldn’t help but glance down at the small bump, hardly noticeable, but it still made me smile and wonder how something so small could be in there.
“We all are.” Ella agreed, causing me to smile and laugh.
“You used protection, right?” Kaylee chimed in, biting her lip. “Birth control? Condom?”
“We used a condom.” I left out the bit about it possibly breaking and changed the subject.

“So, Steph! How’s everything going with the baby?” I asked, forcing the focus on her. She laughed, looking down at her stomach.
“Great!” She admitted, laughing. “I’m three months and two days! I already feel little kicks and bumps and it makes me sick, but it makes me so excited, too! I can’t wait to find out the gender!” She gushed. “I mean, I can’t for like a month and a half but I just want to know now! We’ve got names picked out officially!” She paused as we all urged her to tell us. “Okay, okay!” She laughed, “Luna Mali Hood. The Mali is after Mali Koa, his sister.” I gasped.
“Oh my god. That’s absolutely beautiful!” I gushed.
“And if it’s a boy?” Ella asked.
“Mateo Vincent Hood. Vincent after my father.” The table went silent. Steph’s father passed away when she was 14 and she never quite got over it.
“Those are beautiful.” Kaylee spoke after a long while.
“Yeah, I agree. Those are so beautiful.” I commented.
“Breathtaking.” Ella nodded.

“Cal and I have also considered moving into a flat in your building, Kay. I heard that some rooms opened up on your floor?” Steph changed the subject.
“It’s so funny you say that, Mike and I are looking for a new flat.” Kaylee and I smiled.
“There’s actually four open ones right now.” Kaylee spoke.
“It’s kind of funny and it’d be so cool if we could swing this… But Kaylee and I are two flats away from each other. One just opened up and the other has been open for months. But we’d all be in like a line. The other two on our floor are all the way at opposite ends of the hall. There’s also a few on other floors.” Almost simultaneously, Steph and Ella pulled out their phones and began texting.
“I’ll have Ashton talk to James, the landlord. They’re buddies. I’m sure we can swing it!” Kaylee squealed. And at this moment in time, everything felt so perfect between our group.

Unfortunately, that only lasted a few seconds, as Ella’s face fell.
“What’s wrong?” Steph asked.
“Well, grandma just gave me some bad news.” Ella’s grandma was like her mum, her mum and dad travelled a lot for their jobs, so her and her sister Nicky stayed with their grandparents so they could have a stable environment growing up. “My grandpa isn’t doing well, he hasn’t been for a while, but Nicky is causing so much trouble at home that grandma wants to ship her out to me and Mike. It’s been like this for a while, but I guess she is officially coming in a month. Just finishing the school year and coming out to us.” Ella sighed. Nicky was only 14 and going through, as Ella put it, an “everyone hates me because I’m weird” phase, which just meant that she’d fallen in love with a boy who cut himself a lot and now Nicky thought it was okay to do it, too.
“Hey, it’ll be alright.” Kaylee cooed.
“Maybe she won’t be that bad.” Steph suggested.
“You could always pawn her off on one of us for a few days.” I chimed in.
“I guess now’s a better time than any to move.” Ella gave us a small smile.
“I’ll talk to the landlord tonight.” Kaylee smiled, checking her phone before changing the conversation.

“I swear on my life.” he growled. “Jocelyn is driving me absolutely insane lately.” She tossed her phone on the table, burying her face in her hands. “Everything results in a temper tantrum. It’s I want this. I hate this. Don’t do that. I hate you. Everything. She’s always throwing fits. And now, she’s mad because Ashton told her I was out with you guys, she was furious she couldn’t come with. And then he told her Romy was cutting my hair, she flipped shit! I do not want to go home to her telling me how much she hates it.” Kaylee shook her head then looked at Steph. “Steph, just you wait they say it’s the Terrible Two’s but just you wait for the Fussy Four’s. She never stops! And Ella you’re lucky that you can at least whip a fourteen year old in shape. I can’t do anything about Josi.” She sighed. “Romy, kids suck. Don’t have kids.” We all shared a laugh.

“I’m thinking about going back to school.” I told the girls as Kaylee sat in my kitchen chair. The girls came over when we were done shopping and I dyed Steph and Ella’s roots and was now cutting Kaylee’s hair.
“Cosmetology school?” Steph assumed, looking up from her phone.
“Yeah, I mean… I’ve been doing your hair for years and I wanted to in high school. I was looking online and there’s a course starting in October. I talked to my boss and he said I’d have to work less but I think it’s worth it.” I shrugged.
“I think that’s a great idea.” Kaylee smiled.
“Me too.” A voice sounded from the doorway. Simultaneously, we turned our heads and looked at Luke in the doorway. He was walking with his cane into the flat. Steph and Ella shared an excited glance as Luke came up to me and kissed my cheek before wobbling to the fridge.
“How was therapy?” I asked, sending an apology smile to the girls.
“Fine. Ashton, Josi, Cal, Mike, and I went to a movie after. We saw Finding Dory.” He playfully rolled his eyes. “They’re back at Ashton’s talking to the landlord.”
“What did Chris say about your progress?” I asked.
“Um… It’s not looking that good. It’s not looking bad, but I’m just not progressing.” He frowned, taking a beer out of the fridge. “I’m starving.” He complained.
“I think we’re all going out to dinner so don’t spoil your appetite.”

As soon as I finished cutting Kaylee’s hair, Cal, Mike, Ash, and Josi walked into my apartment and immediately stirred up conversation. Josi toddled over to Kaylee and pulled on her jeans. As soon as she was lifted, she began to squirm and cry.
“Mommy I don’t like!” She pushed away from Kaylee, hitting her shoulders.
“Josi! Stop!” She scolded, trying to get a better grip on her. Josi kept hitting her and pushing and flailing her arms. She began kicking Kaylee’s stomach. “Jocelyn, please!” But she didn’t stop. She was screaming and crying and all we could do was sit and watch. Josi continued to kick and push Kaylee’s shoulders, her hands were curled into fists and one of them collided with Kaylee’s face. “Ashton!” She yelled. He ran over, snatching Josi—who was still flailing mid-air. His pace quickened as he walked out of the kitchen and into the hall, shutting the door behind him to muffle the screaming and crying. Kaylee followed in pursuit.

After sitting in the kitchen and listening to muffled screaming and scolding, the environment grew sufficiently awkward. Kaylee came back into the flat with tears staining her cheeks.
“I can’t do it anymore.” She slammed the door. “She is driving me up the wall!” Just then, the crying started to calm. It was as if Kaylee leaving was the key to get Josi to stop crying. “Ash is the only one who can calm her. The kid hates me. My own daughter hates me.”
“I’m sure she doesn’t hate you.” Luke spoke. “She’s just at an age where she throws a lot of tantrums-” Luke was cut off by the door opening. Ashton walked in, holding Josi. Her eyes were red and she was sniffling, sucking on her thumb. We all started casual conversation, pretending not to notice her. Ashton set Josi on the floor and crouched down, whispering to her that she has to go apologize to mommy. Josi turned around and looked up at Kaylee, who was waiting.
“I-I’m sorry mommy.” She stuttered, sniffling.
“It’s okay, baby.” she leaned down and tried to pick her up, but Josi pushed her away.
“No I want daddy.” She turned around and collapsed into Ashton’s legs. With a sigh, he lifted her up and allowed her to bury herself in his neck. He slowly rubbed her back as Kaylee sat on the couch. I followed her after a few minutes and looked over her shoulder at her phone.

“What are you looking at?” I asked.
“Temper tantrum tips. I try all of these. Time outs, hugs, ignoring her, offering something else, not giving in, giving in, keeping her busy, doing something fun, taking her away from what’s upsetting her. Nothing works.” She set her phone down.
“You gotta stay calm, Kay. That’s why she likes when Ashton’s around. You get so angry and upset. You gotta stay calm.” She nodded slowly.
“Yeah. Okay.”

When we got back from dinner with our friends, Luke and I collapsed in my bed.
“Come here.” He whined. “Come cuddle.” Rolling my eyes playfully, I rolled over to him and held his sides, setting my head on his chest. “I’m so tired.” He mumbled in a yawn.
“Me too.” I yawned in return and slowly drifted to sleep.

Notes

I thought it was important to have a friend-oriented chapter.
